What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? How about an ice-cream taster?
Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice cream. Just ask John Harrison, an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 2l years. Harrison's job has been responsible for approving(批准)large numbers of the sweet ice cream – as well as for developing over 15 flavors(味道).
Some people think that it would be easy to do this job; after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No – there's more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a job in this “cool field”.
In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes and grades 60 ice-cream samples. He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12oF. Harrison explains, “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir it, creating ice-cream soup.”
While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one on its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Does the product have the colour expected from that flavor?” Next it's time to taste!
Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy – working at one cool job.

(1)、What is John Harrison's job?

A、An officer. B、An ice-cream taster. C、A chemist. D、An ice-cream producer.
(2)、According to John Harrison, what is useful to get a job in “cool field”?

A、To just like ice cream. B、To find out new flavors each day. C、To have new ideas every day. D、To have a degree in food-science.
(3)、What does Harrison do first when testing ice cream?

A、He smells it. B、He lets it warm up. C、He tastes its flavor. D、He examines its colour.

The Oxford English Dictionary(OED)is thinking of adding the Chinese word tuhao to its 2014 edition(版本). The word has become popular in China since 2013. It is used to describe rich people who spend money in extravagant(奢侈的)ways. The word has also become popular in Western countries, too.

The word being used by people in foreign countries is an example of China's spreading influence in the world in not just economy(经济), but also society and culture. People are paying attention to what is happening in China and are gradually picking up some Chinese words. These words express special Chinese ideas, but they cannot be easily translated into English.

The OED is also thinking of adding hukou and dama to the 120 Chinese words that have been collected in its dictionary. Hukou means China's system(制度)that makes sure Chinese people can live in a certain place, and dama means middle-aged Chinese women who influence the global gold markets because of their gold-buying habits.

The news that the OED will include these Chinese words has been criticized. Some people say the words can be embarrassing to some people in China, but others think that it's natural for words to spread and be used in other places. In fact, the word tuhao expresses the humor of China. It is easy to pronounce and it makes fun of rich people who have more money than taste.

So, welcome to the English language, tuhao-let's be friends!

Back in New York, I am fighting fires as the assistant captain (副队长) of a volunteer fire company.

I still remember my first fire. I was the second volunteer on the scene (现场). The captain was talking with the homeowner, who was surely having one of the worst days of her life. At midnight, she was standing outside in the heavy rain, under an umbrella, barefoot (赤脚的), while her house was in flames (在燃烧中). The other volunteer, who had arrived just before me, was asked to go inside and save the homeowner's dog. The captain then waved (招手) me over. He said, "Bezos, I need you to go upstairs past the fire, and get this woman a pair of shoes." So, not exactly what I was hoping for, but off I went up the stairs, down the hall, past the "real" firefighters, who were pretty much done putting out the fire at this point, into the bedroom to get a pair of shoes.

Now I know what you're thinking, but I'm no hero. (Laughter) I carried the shoes downstairs where I met the other volunteer with the valuable dog. We took our treasures outside to the homeowner, where, not surprisingly, his received much more attention than mine.

A few weeks later, the company received a letter from the homeowner thanking us for saving her home. The act of kindness she noted above all others was that someone had even gotten her a pair of shoes.

Here, I would offer this reminder: don't wait. Don't wait until you make your first million to make a difference in somebody's life. If you have something to give, give it now.

Not every day is going to offer us a chance to save somebody's life, but every day offers us an opportunity to affect (影响) one. So get in the game. Save the shoes.

 请阅读下面短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C三个选项中,选出一个最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

Juice tastes good. But is it wise and healthy to drink juice? We asked three experts for their ideas.

Bec Reynolds, a nutritionist(营养学家)

Drinking water is the best choice. However, if you don't like it and cannot drink milk, then it's better to drink juice than to have drinks that are "worse," like soft drinks. Both juice and soft drinks are sugary, but juice often have some vitamins, so you'd better not drink them.

It would be better to drink juice that is made from many different vegetables. Few children eat enough vegetables. But vegetables are very important for the growth of your body.

David Manton, a ____

There are two main reasons for not drinking juice. First, the sugar in it feeds the bacteria(细菌)on your teeth. In Australia, nearly half of all six-year-olds have at least one hole in their teeth. Drinks like fruit juice are part of the reason for this.

Second, the acid(酸) in many different fruit juices can destroy the hard outer coating of your teeth. Once it's gone, it can't grow back.

Sandro Demaio, a doctor

Fruits like oranges and apples have fiber(纤维素). Fiber is very important. First, it slows down our eating. Second, it makes us feel full for longer. And third, it helps prevent the sugars going into our blood. Then we have fewer chances of getting weight, which can lead to many health problems.

When we tum apples into apple juice, we remove most of the fiber. Sometimes, even the vitamins are lost. What we don't lose, though, is the sugar. So try not to drink juice.

It was half past five in the evening when Sarah came home from work. She walked into the living room and looked after three children. The children were fourteen, thirteen and 'nine years old. They were watching TV. The room was dirty and untidy. There were empty glasses and dirty clothes on the floor. There were cakes on the sofa. Toys were everywhere.

Sarah got angry. "How dirty and untidy this place is!" she said to her children. "I can't work all day and then do housework all evening. I'm not doing the housework!" And so, Sarah didn't do the housework. She didn't clean. She didn't do 'the dishes. She didn't wash the clothes. Every evening she sat in the sofa and watched TV.

Two weeks later, every dish in the house was dirty. All the children's clothes were dirty, too. Every trash can,(垃圾桶)was full. The whole house was dirty and untidy.

Then one day Sarah got very surprised when she came home from work. The kitchen was clean. The children cleaned the kitchen! The next day, the living room was clean, and the children were washing their clothes. Sarah told the children. "OK, III do housework again. But you must help me."

Now Sarah and the three children do the housework together. Then they all sit in the sofa and watch TV.
