Once a very rich man and his son collected valuable paintings by famous artists like Picasso, Van Gogh and Monet.

Later, the son left to join the army. After a few weeks, the old man received a letter saying his son had died while taking another soldier to a hospital. The old man became very lonely and sad.

One day, a soldier visited the old man and gave him a painting—it was a portrait(肖像)of his son. The painting of his son became the old man's most valuable item. He told his neighbors it was the greatest gift he had ever received. The following spring, the old man died.

All of the old man's paintings would be sold at an auction(拍卖会). The auction began with the painting of the old man's son.

“Who will open the price at $100?” the auctioneer asked. Moments passed and no one spoke or raised their hands. Someone said, “Who cares about that painting? Let's get on to the good ones.” More voices followed in agreement. “No, we must sell this one first,” replied the auctioneer. “Now, who will take the portrait of the son?”

Finally, a good friend of the old man spoke, “Ten dollars!” “Will anyone go higher?” called the auctioneer. After more silence he said: “ Going once… going twice…Sold!” The auctioneer then announced that the whole auction was over. “According to the father's will, whoever takes the son's portrait gets the whole collection.” The auctioneer said.

Because of the father's love, whoever took the son got it all.

One day. Many years ago, when I was working as a psychologist in England, David was brought into my office. His face was pale(苍白)and he looked at his own feet.

David lost his father when he was two years old and lived with his mother and grandfather ever since. But the year before he turned 13, his grandfather died and his mother was killed in a car accident. His teacher told me that he refused to talk to others from then on.

    How could I help him?

David didn't say a word. As he was leaving. I put my hand on his shoulder.

"Come back next week if you like, "I said.

He came and I suggested we played a game of chess. He agreed. After that we played chess every Wednesday afternoon in complete silence. Usually, he arrived earlier than he agreed. It seemed as if he enjoyed my company. But why didn't he ever look at me?

"Perhaps he simply needs someone to share his pain with." I thought.

Months later, when l was looking at his head, he suddenly looked up at me. "It's your turn, "he said. After that day, David started talking. He finally had friends in school and he even joined a bicycle club. He wrote to me a few times. Now he had really started to live his life.

Maybe I gave David something. But I learned a lot from him. I learned how time makes it possible to overcome(克服)what seems to be so painful. David showed me how one without a word—can reach out to another person. All it takes is a shoulder to cry on, a friendly touch and an ear that listens.

 完形填空。

On the first day of our science class, Mr. Jackson gave us a talk about an animal called Wampus(猫豹). 1 told us that the Wampus lived on the earth millions of years ago during the Ice Age and died out because of climate change. We all listened 2 and took notes of everything he said. Later we had a 3 .

When the exam paper was returned 4 me, I was surprised and sad. There was a big red"×"through each of my 5 . I failed. But how Came? I had written down 6 Mr. Jackson said in class.

Then I found that no one 7 the test at all. What happened?

"Very simple,"Mr. Jackson explained."I had made up that story about the Wampus. There had never been such an animal, 8 the information in your notes was not correct. Do you want to get 9 marks for incorrect answers?"

We were angry. What kind of test was this? What kind of teacher was Mr. Jackson? How was it possible 10 us students to doubt what the teacher taught us?

"The zeros on your papers will be 11 in your grade books," Mr. Jackson said. And he did it.

Through this 12 , Mr. Jackson hoped that we would learn something. Teachers and books are not always 13 . In fact, no one is always right. Mr. Jackson told us not to let our minds go to sleep. Instead, we should keep thinking all the time and speak up if we think there are 14 in our teachers' words or in books.

We should form the habit of 15 and develop the ability to decide by ourselves. What a special lesson Mr. Jackson gave us!
