In some science fiction movies, evil robots refuse to die, no matter how hard people fight back.

    Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating (挨打) and keep on going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider with four legs.

    Until now, even the most advanced (先进的) robot was almost certain to break down when it was damaged. That is because its computer inside simply doesn't know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.

    To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (发动机) and two sensors (传感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals to the machine's software. Using this information, the computer can then figure out the machine's shape at any moment.

    The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it's far from scary. It may someday help scientists create better artificial (假的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who lose them. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.

    “It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it's damaged,” says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”

March 22 is World Water Day. Believed to be the source (源头) of all life, water plays a great role in the beginning of Chinese civilization (文明) and has inspired wise ideas in Chinese philosophy (哲学).

Chinese civilization is one of the world's ancient river civilizations. It began thousands of years ago along the Yellow and Yangtze rivers, linking the culture to water from its beginning.

However, the way people and water get along has two sides. Water is highly important for life and growing things, but if we can't control it, it can cause big problems. Knowing the strong power of water, Chinese people have always tried to use it in the best way possible. For example, Yu, the first ruler of the Xia Dynasty (朝代), controlled floods by changing and digging the waterways so that the water could easily go into the sea.

The Dujiangyan irrigation (灌溉) system in Sichuan was cleverly built It makes full use of the natural features of the area without harming the environment.

Water is also given philosophical meanings to educate Chinese people and rule the country. According to Xunzi, Confucius (孔子) believed water had qualities such as justice and courage. He once said that: "He who is wise loves water; he who is virtuous loves mountains." So, Confucianism suggests that people should learn from water and train their sense of morality (道德感). Inspired by water, Laozi gave birth to the idea of "overcoming hardness with softness and non-action". These ideas later inspired rulers to follow the rules of nature and respect the will of the people.

Lofton is a little village (村庄) in England. It is not far {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the city of Manchester. Not many {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (family) live around the village, so the people all know each other. Most of {#blank#}3{#/blank#} are {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (friend) and helpful.

In the evening a lot of people like {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (watch) TV. But if they go to see a film or go to a concert (音乐会) , they have to go to Manchester. Because there {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (be) no cinemas in Lofton. 

Like many other villages near towns or cities, it is clean and quiet. So life in Lofton may not be so {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (excite) as the life in the big cities, but it can be just as big. That is {#blank#}10{#/blank#} people in Lofton love their village. 

Robots seem new to most people. 1 , they have a long history. The first one was made by a Greek. There are lots of science fiction (科幻) 2 about robots, and the robots in the films are faster, 3 and cleverer than human beings and they are hard to be destroyed. In 4 life, robots are used to do many dangerous, difficult or boring 5 . For example, some people can't see, and they use dogs to help themselves move around. But in the future, robots dogs 6 take the place of these guide dogs. Some people can't 7 themselves and robots can help take care of them. 

Today robots are also used in 8 . In the hospital, a robot 9 meals from the kitchen to the patient's room. It never loses its way because it has a 10 of the hospital in its computer system. 

Robots can help us in many ways. However, they will never take the place of humans.

As the years went on, Mike met more people like Ken. Luckily, most people encouraged {#blank#}9{#/blank#} and some helped him to become even {#blank#}10{#/blank#}. He got a lot of chances to perform in movies. Now Mike is a famous comedy actor!
