A. Can you tell me the journey? B. Did you have any problems on your journey? C. How long did it take to find a suitable elephant? D. What gave you the idea to travel around India on an elephant? |
Reporter: ①
Chris: Well, it all started two years ago when I was having a trip to India. I visited a photographic exhibition of elephants and I realized that the only way to travel around India was on an elephant.
Reporter: What did you do next?
Chris: I flew to New Delhi and started looking for an elephant. I needed an elephant trained to carry people. I asked an expert for help. He taught me how to ride an elephant. He also helped me find an elephant.
Reporter: ②
Chris: Not too long. I bought an elephant called Tara for about USD 6,000.
Reporter: ③
Chris: Tara and I set off from New Delhi a week later. We were heading to Sonepur in northern India. And what a ride! Elephants can travel at about 6 miles an hour. It took us 64 days to complete the journey.
Reporter: ④
Chris: Yes, a few. But nothing serious. On the third day, Tara hurt her foot. But that got better quickly. Also, there was a lot of heavy rain during the first week and we got very wet!
What season is it in October? If you ask people from the UK, they will tell you it's "autumn". {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Why does this season have two names in English? According to Dictionary.com, both words have been around for a long time, but neither of them was the first to describe this season. During this season, crops(庄稼)would become ripe(成熟)and farmers would have a big harvest(丰收). {#blank#}2{#/blank#}
Then, in the 1600s, more people left their farms and moved to cities. With fewer people farming, the word "harvest" became less useful. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} They knew leaves fell from trees during the season, so people started calling it "the fall of the leaf', or "fall" for short.
{#blank#}4{#/blank#} It gradually replaced(替代)"fall" as the word for this season.
At the same time, British people were making their first trips to North America. They brought both the words "fall" and "autumn" with them. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}
A. English speakers needed a different name for the season. B. The season in October is autumn. C. But at the end of the 1600s, "autumn" from the French word, came to England. D. So in Old English, this season was simply called "harvest". E. That's why today's Americans have two names for one season. F. But if you go to the US, you will find that people use both "autumn" and "fall". G. Why is it called both "fall" and "autumn"? |
