Lyle's Second Go

    In 1982，when I was coaching the Raiders， the owner of the team talked with me about a possible trade for Lyle Alzado. After watching him on tape，I didn't think he was that good, but the owner felt we could make Lyle better by creating the right environment lor him. We made the1.

    That summer at training camp，Lyle was having a hard time. He had that look in his eyes that many young players and some old players get when things aren't going 2.One morning Lyle came into my office and he looked like he hadn't slept. Here was a huge man, with his head about as3as it could go. We talked, or rather, I listened. The main point was that Lyle felt his career (职业生涯）was over and it would be best for him and for the team if he retired (退役）.He apologized for4us since we had just traded for him.

    Lyle was always an emotional person. This is one of the reasons he was a good player. He5all that emotional energy with him, ready to lire out at the snap of the ball (开球）.Now he was in front of me， almost crying. I thought for a moment， realizing we had to keep that 6going. Then I went through my reasons why he should not retire. At the end of our talk， I said，“You go out and play your very best, and let us7if you still have it. Personally， I think you do.”

    In January 1984. Tampa Bay Stadium. Super Bowl XVIII. With less than two minutes remaining, we were leading 38-9. We were the world champions of professional football. I saw Lyle，crying like a baby. I had to turn away quickly，or I would have joined him in 8.

    I remembered that morning in my office， and what Lyle， and what the Raiders， had achieved since he came to us. If Lyle hadn't given his career another shot, he wouldn't have had this victory. Maybe the Raiders wouldn't have had this victory. During that moment， I felt one of the greatest satisfactions of my coaching career.

    It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain 1almost a month. The crops were dying. If we 2see some rain soon, we would lose everything

    I was making lunch in the kitchen when I saw my3 son, Billy, walking towards the woods. He was walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes later, he was once again walking towards the woods. I 4 stand it any longer. I went out of the house and followed him.He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very careful not to spill (溢出）the water he carried.As I came closer, I saw5 sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked straight up to them. I almost screamed for him to get away. But the deer 6 hurt him nor even moved as Billy got down. And then I saw a baby deer7 on the ground, thirsty, lift its head to lap up(舔) the water in my boy's hands. When the water was gone, Billy jumped up to run back to the house. I followed him back to a tap. Billy opened it and let the drip slowly fill up his "cup".8he stood up and began to turn back, I was there in front of him. His little eyes9 with tears. Very quickly, he explained 10he was not wasting water. The week before, he had made 11 same trouble with our horses,12 caused him a lecture from his father about the importance of not wasting water.

    This time, I joined him, with a small pot of water from the kitchen. I let him 13 the baby deer alone , for it was 14job. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they15by other drops... more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. All I can say is that the rain came that day saved our farm, just like the actions of one little boy saved the little deer.

    It was the last lesson before1 holiday. The students 2 very happy. Their English teacher was very3, too. The teacher 4 played nice games with them. He sang some nice songs, and then he went to the blackboard and wrote "SMILE"5 it. "This is one of the 6 words in English", he said to the class. 7 the students laughed, and then one girl 8 and said, "Why is it one of the longest words in English?" The teacher said 9 for a while. Then he smiled and said," Because there is a mile between the 10letter and the last.

    Once upon a time, there was a poor fisherman. He always dreamed of becoming 1, and so did his wife.

    One day, while he was sitting on the boat, he 2 felt that the fishing rod was being weighed down by a 3 object.

    He excitedly 4 hard at it and what he saw made him cry. "Wow! A big 5gold chain!" He tried to get the gold chain into the boat, but there seemed to be no 6 to it. His boat started to get over-loaded and the sea water filled his boat. It was really 7. However, he had begun dreaming of a big home, a big piece of land and buying many horses and cows. He kept pulling the chain 8 the boat kept sinking. The boat finally went under the surface of the sea and he tried to swim. 9, his feet were trapped (陷入) in the gold chain and at last he 10 in the sea.

    In fact, there are many people like the fisherman in our life. They always want to get the fortune (财富) 11 hard work. The truth is that desire (欲望) is 12. Only through hard work can we achieve our dreams and live a better life. You may 13 at times and others will think you are crazy at times. But if you 14 that you can succeed, you finally will. Always remember that the bright future can only be created by 15.
