I came across an image recently of a distance runner with a message that told readers to persevere (坚持) at all costs. It reminded me of a conversation I had. My colleague's teaching assistant was asking for my advice. He wanted to know when to quit something. He described how he'd been playing an online game with people for some time. It hadn't been very fun lately, but there was always that small chance of a reward (upgraded equipment, etc). 

I inquired further about his relationship with the players and his gains from the game. I then discussed the sunk cost dilemma, a concept I studied in advanced school due to its personal impact. In high school, I applied to five universities, planning to choose the cheapest one. SUU offered the best scholarship, and after paying a $100 commitment fee, I heard back from another school with an even better scholarship. Despite the new offer, I stayed committed to SUU, believing that switching schools, even if it meant acknowledging the "wasted" $ 100, would have been the wiser financial choice. 

A rational (理性的) decision maker is not ruled by past investments, but weighs future outcomes. I didn't focus on future outcomes when weighing colleges. I focused on the money I sunk into SUU. Rather than evaluating future career options, I focused on the fact that I'd already taken elementary education courses. 

I'm not the only one that's fallen prey to this. I wear clothes I dislike simply because I spent money on them (and that money won't come back). Unhealthy relationships last because of the invested time (leading to more unhappy years). However, time, effort, or money that you've invested doesn't mean you should continue. Society often stresses perseverance — never quit, never give up, don't waste. However, only you know your right path. Walking away can be the toughest choice. You might realize a path you're on is no longer the right one or never was.

I've had many opportunities to experience living in a foreign culture, but my first experience came in an unexpected place—my own country. When I was 20, I got an internship (实习职位) in New York City. It was my first time to 1 outside of my home state of Texas.

With my move north came culture 2 . I grew up in a big city in Texas. But it was no comparison to the tightly 3 New York with their 8 million citizens. I was used to life at a 4 pace; New York moved fast. The saying is true—this city never 5 . I had to adjust.

My first reaction was fear. Fear I would 6 at my new internship in the 54-storey office building. Fear of getting lost on the subway. Fear that the locals wouldn't have 7 for my frequent moments of confusion. My 8 ranged from reasonable to silly. But I 9 my fears and kept trying.

I learned quickly never to 10 a New Yorker always speaks English. New York is home to people of all walks of life, from all corners of the world. At weekends, I would spend hours 11 along Canal Street in Chinatown—the closest I'd ever been to an 12 country.

By the end of my internship, I was a little older, a little wiser and sick of big city life. I 13 the skyscrapers, tourists and the high price I had to pay for a cheeseburger and fries. But I had 14 , too. I was quicker, smarter and more independent. I knew I would miss that feeling of having the world right at my doorstep. But it was good 15 for the life of travel I'd soon begin.

One teacher had two students. One of them had a positive vision while the other had the 1 one.

One day, the teacher 2 for a park with both the students and while wandering in the garden, they 3 a mango tree from which some ripe and juicy mangoes were 4 . On seeing this, the teacher thought to 5 both of his students. Then, he asked the first one, "My dear child, what do you think of this mango tree?"

The student answered instantly, "Teacher, in spite of people 6 this tree with stones, it gives us sweet and juicy mangoes. It does 7 but still it gives us fruits. I wish all human beings learn this important 8 from the mango tree-to share their 9 even if they have to suffer for this."

After that, the teacher asked the other student the same question. The student 10 answered, "Teacher, this mango tree is no good and will not give mangoes by itself but only when we hit it with stones and 11 . Therefore, we should hit it hard to get sweet mangoes from it. That is the only way to 12 these mangoes. It is also clear from this tree that in order to get good 13 from others, we need to be violent and only when we become violent, then and only then will we get 14 ."

The teacher was delighted with the answer given by the first student because he had an admirable vision and 15 the tree with positive vision.

At the age of 12, I started playing golf when my parents enrolled me in a junior camp at the local public course. From that moment, much of my life has been 1 the game. The aspect of golf that attracted me was the sense of 2 . There's always a chance of making something 3 happen, maybe breaking a personal record or potentially making a hole-in-one. 

When I decided to pursue journalism in college, I had to take a 4 from the game. I'd still go out 5 to play with friends, but for the first time since my teens, I was away from my community. 

My 6 for playing golf reawakened when a friend invited me to the Langston course, which 7 me of the courses where I grew up: a 8 spot for people of all working-class backgrounds, and a far cry from the private golf 9 , in which expensive memberships are a basic 10 . When I get paired up with strangers to play, it's usually more of a 11 crowd. 

Some of the best walks I've taken have been out on the golf course. It's where I 12 with old friends and meet new ones, who 13 me to practice and get better. We share experiences on the golf course that are 14 and laugh about for days after our rounds. 

The sense of community I've regained with golf goes beyond my imagination. My circle only seems to be 15 , and I'm eager to see what the future holds.

I'm a fan of people sharing their personal stories. Hearing people's stories is a source of constant 1 for me to write. Yet, when it comes to telling my personal stories, I often 2 to find my voice and courage.

As a shy person, talking about myself makes me feel 3 . It requires a lot of mental 4 for me to feel okay sharing my stories and I also think I don't have stories worth 5 .

As I wrote in a blog post a few weeks ago, it becomes increasingly important for me to be an authentic (真实的) self. So I 6 to take a big leap (跳跃) and share something deeply personal in my weekly newsletter. I wrote about my struggle with procrastination (拖延症) and my 7 to finish my book.

I was nervous to 8 that email. But I decided it was something I wanted to be 9 about with everyone. Several hours later, I received dozens of heart-warming 10 . Many people said they were 11 reading my book. What was even more touching were emails from people who shared their own struggles with procrastination and writing. Over the Internet, across the miles I had the chance to connect with total 12 with the same problem as me. By telling our story, we 13 ourselves from those binds (束缚) and give rise to an opportunity of connection. I feel a stronger 14 to share my stories in the most authentic ways possible, even if it's online 15 .

It has been an unwritten rule that those who become 30 years old must have already been in a stable(稳定的) place. 1 , they might be considered a failure.

I am turning 30 tomorrow and I ask myself," Should I 2 this deadline?"I am still   renting an apartment, and living alone. This seems far from 3 for most, but it looks nice to me.

When I graduated years ago, I 4 worked as a journalist because I had been dreaming of writing stories for the 5 since childhood, and I thought I would stick to it forever. But as time flies, I realize that it will be unwise to 6 myself to just one path. Therefore, I decide to start my another pursuit— studying law.

Was I 7 before? No. I have learned that there is no single formula (公式) for8 and happiness. Our lives are filled with 9 possibilities. While I really love my . current career, I have also been interested in being a 10 . So why should I11 the dream to the end just because I am 30 already?

Turning 30 can also be a chance to do whatever you like. You needn't care about how others will12 your decisions. The most important part is that you are just being yourself and13 it. Turning 30 is just like any other birthday. Stop feeling 14 about your age and try to 15 all the opportunities and surprises that life throws on your way.
