    Many kinds of birds live in the United States, but the number of the birds is becoming smaller and smaller every year. One of the leading reasons is the growing number of pet cats. By keeping your pet cats in your home, you can help give birds a better possible chance to live.

    Of the 90 million pet cats in this country, about two-thirds are allowed to go outside. It is said that these cats kill hundreds of millions of birds each year as well as billions of small animals such as rabbits and field mice.

    They can also bring illness to the animals that live in people's yard, and further weaken(变弱) the health of the natural populations.

    Allowing pet cats to go outside is not just bad for birds and wildlife(野生动物). It is bad for the cats themselves, too. Outdoor cats can get sick very easily. They may be in danger from traffic and attacks   (攻击)  from other animals. In fact, outdoor cats usually don't pass the age of five, while indoor cats often live to be 17 or older.

    Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction(瘾) called Internet addiction. According to experts，Internet addicts(迷)spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. They lose control of the time they spend on the Internet.

    For example, one college student was missing for several days. His friends were worried and 1ooked for him everywhere but couldn't find him. They called the police. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the Internet — for seven days straight.

    A study shows that about six to ten percent of Internet users become addicted. The teenager spend more time on the Internet than with friends and family. That's why some experts worry most about young people.

    Is "surfing the Internet" a hobby or all addiction for you? You may have a problem if you have one of the following symptoms(症状):

    You go out with your friends less and less.

    You can't wait to get online again.

    You've decided to spend a short time online，but then you spend several hours.

    You do not go to important family events or you do not do school projects because you like to spend hours on the Internet.

    What is the solution? Some experts suggest that people set strict limits(限制) on their time for Internet use. You have to learn to control it，or the Internet would control you.

    Around the world, people live in homes of many shapes and sizes. In some countryside, people live together with their family in a huge house with gardens or backyards. On the other hand, the buildings in cities are usually very close together.

    A home can be any kind of building—large or small. Some people even have homes on boats, in tents or in caravans that can be moved around. Caravans are mobile homes. They are towed(拖，拉) by either a car or a huge truck. Some of them are holiday homes. We can see many families staying together in these caravans.

    In the past, rich and important people built strong castles to keep their families safe. The castles(城堡) were built on hill tops with high walls and some even had moats. Moats were deep and wide ditches(壕沟) filled with water. They made it difficult for enemies to attack.

    Today, we have different ways of protecting our homes. Some homes are installed(安装) with video cameras and an alarm system. These will help to alert(向……报警) home owners if someone tries to break in.

    Homes are important to all the people. Everyone needs a home where they feel sheltered and safe.
