Joe Connor comes from Kinsley and works in an office in Kansas City. His job is a typical nine-to-five, Monday-to-Friday job. So at the weekend, he does something different. He likes traveling but he works as a volunteer too. He helps different people for free. Every weekend, there's a new project.

This weekend, Joe is helping to build a house. You can see him in the photo. He's moving a large blue panel(板子). It's part of a wall. Joe isn't a professional builder, but that's the interesting thing about this project. The other people are" weekend builders" too. These "weekend builders" are from the small town of Greensburg in Kansas. A year ago, a tornado(龙卷风) hit their town. After the tornado, the community started a project to build new homes. The project is for 30 new homes. They get some help from a building company and a group of volunteers. Joe says," I heard about the tornado and the new project. I knew some people in Greensburg. I wanted to help." Joe's friends are here this weekend too. They're working with Jill and Scott.

Jill and Scott are both from Pratt, and they are building their" dream house". Jill (on the right) is standing near his new house. He's holding a part of the new wall. They're making the house that can fight against tornadoes ﹣that's why it has an unusual shape.

Their house is almost ready, so next weekend, Joe is moving to a different project. Why does he do? "Though busy, I can help people. I can make friends and that is fun! So, why not?" he says.

People use languages to communicate. Any language has its ways to express people's minds. One of the ways in common is the use of idioms. An idiom is a group of words. It has a special meaning that is different from the usual meaning. For example, under the weather is an idiom meaning ill. So when people say "I'm under the weather", they are saying that they're not feeling well. Another example, in all weathers means in all kinds of weather. So, "There are homeless people sleeping on the streets in all weathers" tells us that homeless people sleep on the streets no matter whether it is cold or hot.

Different languages may have different ways to make idioms. For people who are learning a foreign language, idioms could cause misunderstandings and bring them endless problems. On the other hand if things are done right, idioms can also be a fun way of looking into a new culture and understanding how the people think and talk.

Metaphor(比喻)is often used in idioms. Let's read the following two examples:

▪Example 1: It makes my blood(血液)boil(煮沸)when my brother breaks my computer.

▪Example 2: The night was dark and quiet; my blood ran cold when I heard a strange noise outside on a dark night.

In neither situation above, can our blood reach the point so high or so low in temperature. However, with the situations the two sentences created, it is not difficult to understand the  ▲  feeling in the first example and very afraid in the second.

Of course, not all idioms are this easy to understand. When we come to idioms of a foreign language, a good dictionary of idioms is always suggested.

Volunteering is a great way to help others. Whether it's a child who has difficulty finishing his or her homework, or an elderly person who feels lonely.

When somebody volunteers, they are doing something good for others or the world around them without being paid. Volunteering comes in all shapes and sizes. It can be organized, such as working for an organization, like helping your neighbors with their food shopping. Many people volunteer to help the environment by picking up rubbish or planting trees.

Helping others can actually help yourself, too. Research has shown that volunteering improves your well-being. It can give you a sense of purpose—a meaningful goal work towards—and then help build your self-trust and make you feel active. This is true if you match volunteering to your interests.

"Volunteering also offers you a chance to meet and connect (连接) with others. Which is good for your mental (心理) health." said Doctor Wang. Volunteering can influence (影响) your health. By giving something to others, you feel happier and this is good for your health. "Volunteering has also been shown to reduce your personal worries. That's because you pay some attention to others' need." said Professor Yang who had a speech about volunteering in our school last Friday afternoon.

So, what are you waiting for? Go volunteering and make a difference. Not only for yourself, but also for the world.
