Last month, I went to London with my mum and dad. Firstly, I had a picture in my head of Big Ben, cute taxis, the River Thames and so on.

London is as good as I know it! As soon as I got off the train into St. Pancras Station, I found I was in heaven. You can see lots of people from every culture. The taxi drivers spoke in this city's English, which was almost like another language. And there were many "old" London taxis, just like the ones you see in the films.

I found the people to be really friendly, for the most part. And the city was clean and exciting. I saw a show and it was popular in the country. I took many pictures of the interesting places. Big Ben sat tall over the River Thames, just as I saw in all the pictures and films. London is truly one of the most magical(神奇的)cities in the world.

In a busy international business (商务) meeting, a group of businessmen from different countries came together to discuss possible working partnership. Among them were Sarah, an American manager, and Li, a Chinese businessman. They had difficulty 1 each other.

As the meeting continued, Li kept quiet all the time, so Sarah thought Li wasn't interested. Sarah decided to break the ice by offering a strong hand shake to express her 2 . However, Li found her handshake was too strong. This made him feel 3 because he was used to shaking hands softly.

Later, during a conversation, Sarah nodded from time to time to show 4 , but Li still had no expressions on his face. Sarah thought he was against the plan. In face, Li was simply thinking about the information 5

As the day went by, misunderstanding continued to 6 . As they kept talking, they both misunderstood each other's body language because they had different ways of showing things. It felt like there was a(n) 7 wall between them.

Then another person 8 both Sarah and Li about the cultural differences in body language. They began to realize why they couldn't understand each other 9 . With this newfound awareness, they changed their gestures and expressions.

In the end, through patience and understanding, Sarah and Li worked out their early problems. They learned to 10 and get used to each other's body language, finally making their business work better.

Several years ago, the United Nations(the UN)issued(发行) a set of stamps celebrating poetry(诗歌)from around the world. The purpose was to show the important role poetry plays in shaping a nation's culture. For the Chinese stamp, the organization chose Li Bai's Thoughts on a Tranquil Night. For me, it was the perfect choice. I was moved by the feelings that everyone in the world could share: loneliness, homesickness and admiration for beauty and the wonders of nature.

That poem was written more than 1, 300 years ago during the Tang dynasty. There were so many poets at that time. Li Bai seemed to be friends with most of them, including Gao Shi, Du Fu, Wang Changling and Meng Haoran. Those of you who have watched the film Chang'an probably know that, although being separated, these men knew each other's work and always tried to keep in touch. And, in a sense, they felt connected by a common goal—to do something useful for their country.

Culture does serve the nation. It is the foundation(基础)on which a nation is built. It provides a nation with its values and spirits. The Chinese appreciate beauty, truth and goodness in their own culture as well as in other cultures. If they had lived during the same era, I believe that Li Bai and Shakespeare would have liked each other's poems. I can imagine them drinking, reading and talking about their poems. Shakespeare would have said, "Ah, yours is a lovely culture. I hope it lasts forever." And Li Bai would've said, "My wish for your culture is the same."
