Yu Minhong, president of New Oriental Education, shared his ideas with the young after the English speech competition of the 14th China Daily. Here is some of his advice to young people:

“One suggestion I'd like to give you is that it's important to do what you like without fear of failure. And the process(过程)of working toward your dreams matters more than the results. Young people should take chances to show off talents. Take competitions like this one as an example: If you are afraid to fail, you'll never get the chance to stand on the stage and make a speech. Above all, it's most important to take part.

Another suggestion I want to give you is to read books. It is not easy to keep reading every day. For me, it is much more difficult and challenging to keep reading and taking notes every day than it is to walk 10,000 steps.”

In his speech, Yu also shared his view on life. He chose a different life rather than a more successful one. He uses the famous lines of American poet Robert Frost (1874–1963) to make his point:“Two roads diverged (分叉) in a wood, and I … took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.”Yu pointed out, “Your happiness should not be what others think you should run after, but instead you should decide what it is. It is you who should make choices for your own life.”

Some people have found that they always spend much more on travelling than planned. Here is how it happens:

    ⒈Preparing too much before travelling

Some people, especially females, like to travel as if starting a new life. Several weeks before the trip, they would be busy shopping for new dresses, better sunglasses and best-selling books. They would rather fill their travelling bags up with all fashionable things. Just travelling? It's more like attending a fashion show. They care more about their appearance than the sights they see during the trip.

    ⒉Following other travellers blindly.

They can't stop shopping for objects they would never normally buy and would certainly never use. For example, we can find a group of travellers" getting ahead" to buy "Christmas" presents even in summer.

⒊Replacing things that are forgotten to bring.

They forget to bring things like trainers, cool bags, toothbrushes or beach towels. The towels sold near beaches are nearly the price of gold leaves. They spend a lot on those things. However, plenty of new towels are sleeping in their bathroom at home.

People usually find themselves poorer than they planed after a holiday trip. There are mainly three {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. Firstly, some female travellers consider a journey as attending a fashion show. How they look seems more {#blank#}2{#/blank#} than what they see, so they spend more money on something new. Secondly, some people follow others without {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. When others do some shopping, they can't {#blank#}4{#/blank#} themselves. Thirdly, goods for daily use at tourist attractions aren't as {#blank#}5{#/blank#} as those back home. As a result, they may spend more than they thought.

Every month, junior high schools in China choose one hero of the month. This person is a hero because he or she has done something to help protect animals in danger. Huang Jing decided to write a letter to the President of China.

Dear Mr President.

I have been doing a project at school recently about animals in danger. I think the situation all over the world is really terrible. I am writing to you to suggest what China should do to help protect animals more.

I know that there are nearly 2, 000 nature reserves in China, which is good. I live in Beijing and there are about 30 reserves outside the city. We visited one of them last month to sec for ourselves.

I feel so sorry for the giant panda. It's one of the most popular animals in the world and a real symbol of China. We learned that pandas mainly live on bamboo, and that a panda can eat half its body weight of bamboo in 24 hours! That's a lot of bamboo. I think we should try to do more to stop cutting down forests. Pandas are already a rare animal and it would be so sad if they became extinct(灭绝)forever.

The other animal we should try to protect more is the Chinese alligator(场子努). These creatures live in some parts of eastern China. These beautiful animals live in freshwater rivers and lakes but the water in some places isn't clean enough for them to live in. It's really dirty in fact. The government should stop factories polluting the lakes and rivers.

If we protect these beautiful animals in China, more foreigners may wish to visit China to see them. They could be an important tourist attraction. It would be good if more people came to visit our beautiful country, especially to see the quieter areas in the country. Now most visitors just see the cities.

I hope you will encourage more people to think about such an important subject.

Sincerely yours,

Huang Jing
