When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs(细枝) from school to plant. None of them looked very strong and lively. But with hope for the future, I planted them somewhere in our backyard which could give them enough sunlight. Over the years, because of the poor soil(土壤), three of them died. Only one lived at last.

It grew crooked(不直的) and very slowly. In fact, it looked more like a fat bush than a tree. Later, I noticed that it was starting to die. The branches(树枝) were becoming bare. Only the top third of the tree was still green. I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer, but it didn't work.

Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I was thinking if it would be better to just cut it down. It would make the yard look cleaner. As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the leaves. It was a bird patiently building a nest in the topmost branches. I smiled when I looked at it. I thought maybe this old tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home.

This tree let me know that all of our lives have a purpose. It doesn't matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share. We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.

Welcome to my home town—Wenzhou. Wenzhou is a city {#blank#}1{#/blank#} a long history. It is in the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} of Zhejiang Province. It has a population of over nine {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. 

My home town is a popular tourist attraction(旅游景点). It is especially famous for many {#blank#}4{#/blank#} of interest, such as the Nanxi River, Yandang Mountain and Yuliao Beach. The weather here is not too hot {#blank#}5{#/blank#}too cold. You can visit it at {#blank#}6{#/blank#} time of the year. In recent(最近的) years, my home town has changed a lot. A large number of people have moved here who are now called New Wenzhounese, so the population is much {#blank#}7{#/blank#} than before. With the fast development, more and more hills are replaced by(被······代替) tall  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}. More and more factories are built, and it causes a lot of environmental problems. I hope my home town will become better and {#blank#}9{#/blank#} .

Brian was a funny student. He loved watching comedies(喜剧) best and hoped to become a comedy 1  one day. When he heard about a comedy show to be held at his school, Brian decided to 2 . But some students laughed at him. "You are not funny but silly, "Ken, one of his classmates, said to his face. "3  will like what you do, "another boy also said to him loudly. For a moment, he thought about giving up the show. 4  he remembered how much his friends liked his jokes. And also his teachers said he was very 5 , so he decided to prepare for it.

My name is Henry Adams. When I was 27, I worked in San Francisco. One Saturday afternoon, I sailed my little boat but a strong wind pushed my boat into the Pacific Ocean. Luckily, I was saved by a British ship heading to London.

I had only one dollar when I arrived in I ondon. I was tired and hungry. At that moment, the window of a nearby house opened and a man said to me, "Come in here, please."I was taken to a beautiful room. There were two old gentlemen discussing something.     ① 

The two gentlemen were brothers.  ②  One brother said, "If an honest and clever stranger arrives in London without friends and money, except for a £1,00,000 bank note, he will starve to death. If he goes to the bank to change this big note, the police will think he stole it and arrest（逮捕）him." The other brother answered, "No, I disagree."

The two gentlemen decided to end their argument with a bet（赌约）.  ③  They chose me because I had an honest, clever face. Also, I was a stranger to England. One of them gave me an envelope and told me not to open it until I was in my hotel room.

 ④  After leaving the house, I opened the envelope and saw money inside of it! I rushed to the nearest restaurant. After eating, I tried to pay with the money but discovered that it was a bank note worth five million dollars! It made my head swim. No one could possibly cash（兑现金）it. The owner said, "You can pay for the meal whenever you want, sir. I understand that you are a rich gentleman. You like playing jokes on people by dressing like a poor man."

I quickly returned to the house but was told that they had left on a trip. Then I remembered the letter inside the envelope. It said, "In this envelope you will find some money. It is yours for only 30 days. At the end of that time, return to this house. We have a bet on you." How strange!

Then, I entered a clothes store to buy a cheap suit. When I showed the owner the bank note, he was angry since the salesman sold me such terrible suit.
