At 9:30, Rose said, "I hate going to bed. I want to stay up and watch a show!" At 6:00 in the morning, her alarm clock went off. Her mother heard her say, "The only thing I hate more than going to bed is getting up in the morning!"

What does Rose have in common with thousands of kids? She is not getting enough sleep. Have you ever stayed up late? If you have, you know that not getting enough sleep can make you feel tired and upset. You may have even noticed that it's hard to think clearly and stay focused when you are overtired(过度疲劳）.

Need some motivation（动力） to go to bed on time? Here are some important advantages (好处) of getting a good night's sleep. After a good night's sleep, we are more energetic, smarter and even happier.

Do you like to play sports? It has been shown that football players, swimmers and tennis players all perform better after a good night's sleep. Your coach(教练） may not tell you this, but the simplest way to improve your performance is to get enough rest.

Do you want to improve your grade? Healthy sleep habits improve your memory and your ability to pay attention to tasks, making schoolwork seem easier. While you get a snooze, your mind is very busy so you don't get a good rest like a long sleep. Researchers（研究者） have found that it's easier to learn after a good night's rest. So, it's no surprise that students who get enough sleep get better grades than those who don't.

My family is from Berlin.We moved to Boston because my father went to teach in a middle school in Boston.

At that time，I already knew English very well but I still felt1 when I thought about being in a strange place.For one thing，I would not have a friend in Boston.For another，as the oldest of the three children in my family2 by setting a good example to my younger brother and sister.

With this weight（负担） on my shoulders，I3 my new life here and made a list of goals for myself.l put this list on my bathroom mirror and reread it before leaving for my first day of school.

At that time，the list seemed reasonable（合情合理的） to 4 .But my mother thought differently.After reading it，she called out， "Mikhail5 wanted to stand out （杰出） in every possible way.

How did I do with the goals on my list？Not so well.First，I did not make anew friend every day，because good friendships 6 time.You can't make friends the way you play baseball.Second，I worked hard but found that some subjects were easier for me than others.And that was OK.Third，I tried my best in all sports7 a leg while running.And as for goal number 8 .I learned that my brother and sister wanted to live their own life in Boston without their older brother's intrusiveness （干扰）．Actually，they've probably adjusted（调整）better than I have.

So I decided that I needed a new list.

Most people have never seen white strawberries, but they have been popular in Japanese food market for years. The {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (Asia) country actually has several kinds of white strawberries. Among them, the White Jewel is the most expensive. White Jewel strawberries {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (create) by Yasuhito Teshima a few years ago. His farm is the only one in the world that produces this special fruit. Teshima says be spent years doing experiments in order to grow{#blank#}3{#/blank#} large strawberry that is white both on the inside and the outside. One of the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (secret) is to cut down on exposure(暴露) to sunlight. But Teshima says his technique (技术) is far{#blank#}5{#/blank#} perfect. Only 10% of his strawberries turn out white. However, the White Jewel is{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (large) of all kinds of white strawberries in Japan. White Jewel strawberries are sold at a high price. John Daub got a chance {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (try) the White Jewel while visiting {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (he) farm. He says, "The White Jewel smells very sweet and the skin is very soft. It tastes sweet like candy, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} unlike candy. The natural sugars don't stay in your mouth and leave a fresh aftertaste (回味). In Japanese culture, expensive fruit like the White Jewel {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (be) often bought as a special gift rather than just as a sweet snack. 

The moon was behind the clouds. And there weren't many stars in the sky. It was a dark night. I saw a glow (光) in my neighbour's (邻居的) kitchen. I thought he was having a night meal, so I went back to my bed. 

Soon there was a smell of burning (烧焦的味道) in the air and I thought there was something wrong. I jumped out of bed quickly and went out to make sure. I saw a fire coming out of my neighbour's kitchen. Then I shouted, "Fire! Fire!" But no one in the neighbourhood heard my shouts for help. 

I ran into my house, called the firemen and went back to my neighbour's house. I knocked on the door hard and called out my neighbour's name, but there was no answer. Finally, I got into the house and rescued a cat and a dog.

I tried to pour (泼) water through the kitchen window but it didn't work. It was a big fire. Luckily, the firemen arrived about ten minutes later and stopped the fire. 

When my neighbour came back, he was sad for his kitchen but he thanked me for calling the firemen and for saving his pets. He wanted to give me some money but I did not accept it. 

Weeks later, my neighbour had a new kitchen. He invited me to see his new kitchen and we enjoyed a big meal there. It made me very happy. After that, he became my best friend. 

Taking public transportation（公共交通） in the United States, you can often see people reading books on their way to school or work. But in China, I rarely （很少的） see people reading during their free time. 

Are people's attitudes toward reading different here？Not really, Data （数据） released by Amazon China in December 2017 show that Chinese people still read a lot. They simply prefer e﹣books over regular books. 

However, other data show that reading is still more popular in the US than in China. Is there a reason for this difference？I'm not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature （文学） （From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms（《三国演义》） to the modern science﹣fiction books The Three﹣ Body Problem（《三体》）, Chinese writers have created many fantastic written works. Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Reading textbooks and doing homework can make you feel quite tired. By the time you finish it, you might not fell like reading for fun. Chinese students definitely （肯定） have to read more and do more homework than US students. So it's no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time. 

But learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own beliefs and attitudes. Where will your next book take you?
