    As summer comes near, many children are really happy to forget about school for a few months. The summer vacation is the best time for students. They can go outdoors and have fun. They can go to big cities to go sightseeing, or go to the countryside to enjoy the beauty of nature. However, studies have found that children forget between one and three months' worth of school learning during the summer months. Spelling and math abilities are seriously influenced because of the long vacation, while reading is not really influenced by the time off. The most probable reason for this is that most children usually read at least outside of the classroom, whether newspapers, magazines, books, or video game guides. However, their math and spelling skills only get exercised in the school setting.

    The first summer vacation appeared because the farm children have time off to help work in the fields in the high growing season, but this reason is no longer valid since fewer kids actually work on farms today. Some cities in the United States, such as Los Angeles. Have moved to a year-round school calendar, which will bring less influence in their studies. Most cities still use the normal nine and a half-month calendars. To improve skills and to have a good level of preparation, experts suggested trips to museums, summer camps, and visits to libraries to keep kids active and interested the whole summer.

    There are other educational systems that provide vacations while still keeping students' skills in a high level. For example, in Japan students attend class for seven weeks continuously, followed by two weeks of vacation. This continues go through all the year. In Italy, students attend class six days per week, but finish at 1:30 p.m. each day, so that school does not manage their life the way that it does in America.

    Educational experts fear that the three-month summer vacation stops the continuity of learning. Just as students get used to new ways in reading, writing, or critical thinking skills, then the summer vacation comes, they shut down for a long period. When they go back to school after the vacation, they take up to two months to return to their previous level of understanding. And so the debate continues: whether to continue the present vacations or to seek changes.

 根据短文内容,从框内6个选项中选出能分别填入5个小题空白处的最佳选项。

A. Many children don't respect their parents.

B. Don't get to your parents when you are angry.

C. Showing respect will keep your relationship strong.

D. Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something.

E. Communication is a problem for parents and children of all ages.

F. Understanding your values might help them see your purposes in life.

Some people think only school children do not agree with

their parents,however,it is not true. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} If it's hard for you to communicate with your parents,don't worry about it. Here is some advice for you to bridge the generation gap(消除代沟).

Don't argue with your parents. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Your parents probably won't consider your idea if you are shouting at them. And you can't express yourself well if you are angry. Go somewhere to cool off. Make sure you understand why you are unhappy. Then think about what you want to say to your parents. If you don't think you can speak to them at the moment,try writing a letter.

Try to reach a compromise(和解). {#blank#}3{#/blank#}You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael's mother didn't agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. Michael bought the motorcycle,but only drove it on certain days.

Of course,your parents might refuse to compromise on something. In these situations,it is especially important to show love and respect to them. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

Talk about your values. The values of your parents are probably different from those of your own. Tell your parents what you care about and why. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A good relationship with your parents can make you a better and happier person. It is worth having a try!

① One morning, I got up early and decided to make an apple pie for my mum. I called my grandma for help, followed a TV program to make jam and waited excitedly. I enjoyed every step so much that I didn't notice three hours pass by. Although the pie looked terrible and was not that delicious, Mum ate it up and told me it was the best pie that she had ever had. For the first time, I realised that although I didn't make the pie successfully, I really enjoyed the process (过程).

② The process is important because it brings us something bigger than the result itself. That is, we always have new experiences during the process, which may help us improve our skills or form good relationships with others. If we just concentrate on the result and do not enjoy the process, we will be more likely to feel disappointed and want to give up. As a result, we will never understand the real meaning of success.

③ But in this busy world, we see a lot of successful people are in competition. How can we enjoy the process? Well, the question has the answer in itself.

④ Don't always compare yourself with others. First of all, we are all different. And success means different things to us. For some, success means being famous, while for others, it may be health or power. Ride your own ride.

⑤ Slow down. You need to stop expecting immediate results in what you do and learn to be patient. Impatience leads to unhappiness. Do it slowly, but never stop.

⑥ Reward (奖励) yourself. Divide the process into small steps, and give yourself a reward after completing each of them. Rewarding yourself for small wins can go a long way. For example, if you are in the process of losing weight, enjoy your favourite cake once in a while.

Pupils in Madrid, Spain have helped to design a school that is connected to nature. Reggio School is a six-storey building featuring a drawbridge entrance, walls made from mashed cork (软木泥) which provide a home for insects and an indoor rainforest. The school was designed by Andris Jaque, who asked pupils for bright ideas. "I want it to be as colorful and playful as a child's imagination." Andres said.

Starting in the 2023-24 school year, students in a northern Indiana school district (学区) will only be allowed to use clear bags at school. And each student will get one clear bag for free. This measure (措施) has been taken to improve safety in schools. It may help stop certain students from bringing dangerous objects such as guns with them to school.

The ‘Dazing Zone' at a Chinese University

Guangdong University of Finance and Economics has set up six "dazing zones (发呆区)" in its library for students to relax and get inspiration (灵感). Such zones are equipped with desks. chairs and plants, where students can overlook beautiful scenery, think, communicate, eat and rest. "The zones are designed to guide students over the best way to refresh themselves other than to escape from important tasks or projects." says Wang Zhongsheng, the head of the library.

One possible solution is to put liberal arts and STEM studies together. In fact, Lewis University in the US has started to offer a set of courses called " CS + X".{#blank#}4{#/blank#} At the University of Vermont, a program called Engineering Management connects engineering with business. Engineers need to understand markets while business people need to learn engineering.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Only when we know this, can we create the greatest technology with humanity.

B. Students had better study both STEM subjects and liberal arts majors.

C. If a driverless car is forced to run into someone, should it have a choice?
