Learning in the Field

A fun farming class took place in the fields! On Sept 15, Grade 7 students from Jinan No.34 Middle School, Shandong, went on a field trip. They learned about farming, reported Qilu News. At the grain base (粮食基地), teachers talked about grains with students and answered their questions. The students saw millet and soybeans (小米和大豆). They touched the wheat (小麦) and learned that people usually harvest (收获) the wheat at the end of September.

Young Reporters Put on a Show at School

Students at Johnson Middle School in US, are reporting their school's news in their own news program. The students take turns to make the program. They set up a green screen, sit down and give their classmates the headlines (新闻提要) of the day. They include (包括) what's going on in the school and news about future events. They share the lunch menu of the day. "The kids come in excitement. They love being on the news and sharing the news with other kids. They are eager (渴望) to know what's happening around them." said B.J. Burke, the school teacher.

On Nov 8, students from Nanjing Foreign Language School have a special class. During the class, they have a hands-on experience of making folk clothes. The students took on the challenge (挑战) making their own bags through tie-dyeing (扎染). It is a dyeing skill to make blue calico (印花布). The dye and the cotton material (材料) used to make blue calico all come from nature. "Tie-dyeing is a magical art. Everyone does it a bit differently, and you never know exactly how it will look in the end." said Ma Qianyu, a grade 8 student, happy with her work. The students will later go to Nanjing Museum to get more knowledge about life in Jiangsu and the folk customs there.

Where do our happy feelings come from? It's dopamine (多巴胺) that works as a star in our brains. It is often called the "feel﹣good" chemical (化学物质). When there's an ongoing dance party in our minds, dopamine is the DJ playing music of happiness. 

Dopamine is important not only because it controls our feelings, but also it plays a big role in different parts of our brains and bodies. As for brains, it influences our motivation (动机) and affects our learning and memory to help us keep knowledge for a longer time. As for bodies, it controls our body movement and helps us do actions more quickly, correctly and smoothly. Thanks to dopamine, we are encouraged to explore and learn more fun things, make more plans and want to achieve more goals. 

What can we do to make dopamine come out? It's interesting that everyday activities like exercise and even listening to music can help our brain to make it. Also, when we experience something enjoyable, like eating tasty food or reaching a goal, our brain releases dopamine. Besides, scientists have also found that dopamine isn't just about personal pleasure, but also does something with social interactions. When we talk with others, share a laugh or a bond with friends, our brains will also release dopamine. Dopamine keeps us feeling that it is enjoyable to be with others. 

However, too much or too little dopamine can be knotty, which means the brain's dance is not easy. If there's too much, it might make us feel too excited. If there's too little, it can make us feel a bit sad. Therefore, we should try our best to keep a balanced diet and do regular exercise, which is really important for a healthy and happy brain. 

So, if we find ourselves in a happy moment the next time, we should know that it's not just our heart dancing with joy, but also a wonderful dance of dopamine creating a beautiful ballet of happiness in our brain. Enjoy the dance, taste the joy, and let the chemistry of happiness lift the spirits to right heights!

Do you have a lucky number? What is it? Many people have a special number that they hope will bring them good luck. 

In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to. 

For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for "making a fortune (发财)". So, people consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or on their vehicle license plate (车牌照) number. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 p. m. on Aug. 8, 2008. 

The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine dragons on emperors' robes (龙袍) and Chinese myth held that the dragon had nine children. The number 9 also stands for "long lasting". That' s why a man always proposes (求婚) to a woman with 99 or 999 roses. 

So, what's an unlucky number in China? One example is 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the character for "death". 

Because of this, many buildings skip (跳过) the fourth floor, and simply call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in some areas in Hong Kong. As a result, a building whose highest floor is 50 may have only 35 physical floors.

Bill Smith is an 80-year-old man. He lives with his brother Bob Smith in Texas, America. In his free time, he likes making things and helping others. There are many stray (流浪的) dogs in the street, so Bill wants to help them.

The brothers find nine dogs. The dogs always have no food to eat, so they are not healthy. Then they let these nine dogs live with them and eat with them.

"Everyone needs a little fun in life. Stray dogs need it, too," Bill Smith says. "I think it must be very interesting for them to travel by train."

So Bill and his brother buy some old buckets(桶子)and make a dog train. It is very long. The dogs are happy to see the train, and Bill Smith takes them on trips by train every week.

"These dogs don't have families, but they are lucky to have a good time with us now. I'm very happy to be with them, too," Bill says.
