Taking Root.

How many kinds of plants are there in the world? Lucy Braun wondered that as a child. She showed great interest in plants at a young age. She often had energetic walks with her family through the nearby woods. Some plants and wildflowers seemed to shout at her with their wildcolours. Others hid behind rocks.

Lucy looked at the shapes of leaves as she walked in the woods. She kept a record of what she saw. She also learnt to draw what she saw. Then she could compare all kinds of plants. Later, Lucy grew more and more interested in botany, the study of plants.

Branching Out

At university, Lucy took classes in geology, or the study of rocks and minerals. Her work with geologists changed how she looked at the natural world. She continued her studies in botany as well. Lucy also took classes in ecology (生态学). Lucy believed that plant life in some areas was able to move to other places over time.

In Full Bloom

In 1917, Lucy began to teach botany at a university. She lived in a house near the woods. Lucy collected plants from all around the country. She took many photos of them, too. Colour photography was still new then. Because of that, people enjoyed her lessons and photos a lot.

Later in her life, Lucy wrote many field guides. In 1950, she published her most important guide. It describes the plants in the forests across the country. Ecologists still use it to study changes in the forests over time.

Today, Lucy has a few plants named after her. One of them is Lucy Braun's snakeroot, which is now in danger. Lucy's work in the protection of nature may help prevent its disappearance.

Lucy Braun lived to be 81. In her years as a botanist, Lucy collected nearly 12,000 plants!

The first International Basketball Expo（IBE）（国际篮球博览会） is from November 8th to 12th，2023，in Fujian. In the Basketball Expo，we can see great love for the sport. 

Song Yihong loves basketball very much. He is 11 years old now. He plays basketball for 6 years. At first，he does this sport because he wants to be tall（高的）. "I'm too short. I'm not happy about that. And my mother wants me to keep healthy，so I play basketball. "He plays basketball every Thursday and Friday evening，and also Sunday afternoon. 

At first，he finds it difficult but now he thinks it interesting and useful. He thanks his P. E. teacher and friends very much because they give him much help. He thinks he is ready（准备好的） to meet difficult things because basketball helps him to be strong（强壮的）. 

"I know many students love basketball too，but they think it's not easy. Don't be afraid（害怕的）. Just play and you can have fun!"

 My two best friends and I were playing in the park near my house." Hey, look at that poster," Ollie shouted." The Harvest Fair sounds cool!"

" Yes! But S50 for a ticket?" said Marcya." That's a lot."

 After a while, we headed to my house. When we got home, Dad's friend Isaac came with six free tickets to the Harvest Fair. After Isaac left, Dad said," We have five people in our family. Wo'll have to find someone else who wants to go to the fair."

"I want to go!" said Mareya.

" So do I!" said Ollie.

 It took me one second to go from happy to awkward(尴尬的). Just then, my 80- year- old neighbour, Mrs Nish, came in."I just saw the poster. I love fairs! But tickets aren't cheap now."

 That's when Ollie got an idea. He quietly said something to Mareya, and Mareya told it to me, and I told it to my father.

" Well, we happen to have an extra(多余的) ticket to that fair! Would you like to join us?" my dad asked.

" Really?" Mrs Nish's face lit up." I'd like that very much!"

 Tho fair was fantasist. But the very best part was seeing Mrs Nish laughing. The next weekend, Ollie, Mareya, and I had our own Harvest Fair party at home. We played games and made a big pic while singing along to our favourite band Eagle Daze.

In our kitchen, there's a wooden table and three chairs. The chair for my dad is always1 . Thanks' Giving Day is coming. How can I be thankful without my dad? Every night I go to sleep, whispering," Maybe tomorrow, maybe tomorrow."

That morning, the smell of coffee 2 me up. I run into the kitchen. There he is. Dad lifts me onto his shoulders." How's my boy? You've got so big that I can 3 . I' ll you up anymore."

Mum says she's going to make an apple ple for dad's homecoming dinner." Go to the shelf and get that Jar of apples for me, please. Jimmy." That's the 4 jar of apples on shelf. Every time I passed the shelf, I looked at the Jar.5 for dad to come home earlier. My mouth waters just at the word apple.

I take the jar from the shelf and run to my dad and mum, so 6 to be with them. But then ! studio(绊倒) and 7 . When I put out my hand to steady myself, the jar drops through my8 . It is broken, and bits of apple fly everywhere.

Then I hear my mum's steps and 9 ." Are you hurt?" She checks me for cuts. That's the last jar we've been saving to welcome dad home with weeks of no dessert. I want her to shout at me, but all she said was " Don't worry. I am going to make my Mama Sugar Pie 10 apple."
