How The Little Kite Learned To Fly?

By Katherine Pyle

"I never can do it," the little kite said,

As he looked at the others high over his head.

"I know I should fall if I tried to fly."

"Try, "said the big kite, "only try!

Or I fear you never will learn at all."

But the little kite said, "I'm afraid I'll fall."

The big kite said, "Ah, well, good-bye;

I am off." And he rose towards the sky.

Then the little kite's paper stirred(微动).

And he shook himself free for flight.

First whirling(回旋) and scared, then bravery grown,

Up, up he rose through the air alone,

While far below he could see the ground,

And the boys like small ants moving round.

"Oh, how happy I am!" the little kite cried.

"And all because I was brave and tried."

An eight-year-old child heard her parents talking about her little brother. All she knew was that he was very sick and they had no money. Only a very expensive operation (手术) could save him now and there was no one to lend them the money. When she heard her daddy say to her tearful mother, “Only a miracle (奇迹) can save him now,” the little girl went to her bedroom and pulled her money from its hiding place and counted it carefully. She ran to a drugstore(药店)with the money in her hand.

“And what do you want?” asked the salesman.

“It's for my little brother,” the girl answered. “He's really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”

    “Pardon?” said the salesman.

“My brother Andrew has something bad growing inside his head and my daddy says only a miracle can save him. So how much does a miracle cost?”

“We don't sell a miracle here, child. I'm sorry,” the salesman said with a smile.

“Listen, if it isn't enough, I can try and get some more. Just tell me how much it costs.”

A well-dressed man heard it and asked, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?”

“I don't know,” she answered with her eyes full of tears. “He's really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can't pay for it, so I have brought all my money.”

“How much do you have?” asked the man.

“$ 1.11, but I can try and get some more,” she answered.

“Well, what luck,” smiled the man. “$ 1.11, the price of a miracle for little brothers.” He took up the girl's hand and said, “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”

That well-dressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong, a famous doctor. The operation was successful and it wasn't long before Andrew was home again

How much did the miracle cost?

When I was in school, I volunteered to work in a hospital for some time.

The next time I was at  {#blank#}7{#/blank#}same hospital and saw him again, he immediately said,"I remember you. You gave me hope in my darkest hour that evening!"I was so  {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(surprise) that I didn't know how to answer.

In the short moment of  {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(I)staying there, I did nothing at all. But surprisingly he found something he needed in me, just  {#blank#}10{#/blank#} I was there.

I have thought about this thing often over the past years. It makes me want to offer whatever kindness I can to others, and I try to make it out and appreciate (欣赏) it.

There was once a king who had a great palace with a wonderful garden. He was happier than1 else there. In the garden, there lived all kinds of animals. All of them enjoyed2 there.

The king was very happy with the whole garden except for3 old tree in the centre of the garden. It was 4 old and dry that the king hated it very much. Finally, the king ordered some people5 it down and turn the place into a swimming pool.6 after the tree was cut down, the animals left the garden. Without the animals, the garden was not as7 as before. The king was sad, but he didn't know what had happened.

A young man went to the king, and said he could 8 what had happened. "This was because you cut the old tree down." said the young man. "There9 some moths (飞蛾) living in the old tree. Birds needed to eat the moths and then they produced wastes for plants to grow. The plants then attracted many 10 animals to your garden. The animals wouldn't leave your garden 11 you cut down the tree. So the tree is important 12 your garden because it can make your garden beautiful."

"Excellent!" said the king, "I'll make you 13 rich if you make my garden beautiful again."

"I'm afraid you will spend many years on it. It 14 many years to get the natural balance (生态平衡)." said the young man.

The king was sad. This was 15 time he realized the importance of the tree. But all he could do was just to wait.
