Each and every year, during Chongyang Festival, citizens of China celebrate the elders in their families and communities. It's a special tradition which is rooted in the deep value that Chinese culture places on honouring their elders.

Sadly, many of our aging population are seniors without sons, daughters or grandchildren to visit. While they may have great friends, they no doubt miss the tender and loving relationships unique to families. To fill this void（空虚）, many volunteers turned up on October 28 at nursing homes around the country in order to spend time with the residents. In some cases, they performed humble（谦逊的） gestures of kindness, such as combing their hair or washing their feet.

    While the kind acts were appreciated, one embarrassing story out of Anhui province raised a valuable question. Reportedly, one old gentleman had his feet washed seven times during the day by different volunteers. Is this genuinely（真诚地） caring for the elderly? Many of the residents at the home said that those gestures do not make them feel cared for at all. Their family members or community volunteers may drop by for a few hours of token time, but soon they disappear back into their busy lives.

    There is nothing we can give that is more valuable or appreciated than our time. While you may feel like there is barely enough time to care for your many responsibilities, might it be possible to spare just a moment as you walk home from school to sit with a senior who lives in your community? Just five minutes is not going to prevent you from getting your homework done, but it may totally change a day of loneliness into a day of joy for one old man or woman. Do you live far from your grandparents? Why not pick up the phone and let them know you're thinking of them? Or maybe you could remind them of the “good old days” and mail them a short letter. Imagine their surprise and joy!

We live in a complicated（复杂的） and busy world, but kindness and caring is still a very simple thing.

    When a person is hurt or becomes sick, people will give him immediate (立即的 )care. We call it first aid(急救). When there is a sudden(突然的) situation, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, so first aid plays a very important role. Immediate action is necessary when someone loses lots of blood.

    Standing in the queue

    English people like to form queues. They think it is the fair way to behave. People wait in a queue in shops or at bus stops. People will think you are rude if you don't join the queue.

    Please, Thank you, Excuse me and Sorry

    It is good manners to say "Please" and "Thank you". If someone is in your way, say "Excuse me" and they will move. If you bump into someone or you are in their way, say "Sorry". They will probably say sorry, too, even if it was your mistake. Saying sorry does not always mean you are wrong. Sometimes it is a polite thing to say.

    Meeting a new person

    When people meet for the first time, the usual custom is to shake hands. The next time you meet that person, you can just say hello. English people don't usually hug or kiss if they don't know each other really well.

    Talking to people

    English people find it difficult to start conversations with strangers. If you are on buses or trains, they usually sit as far away from other people as possible. If you want to start a conversation, the topic that English people are always happy to talk about is the weather. So you need to be able to say "Isn't it warm (sunny/windy/wet/foggy) today?" or "Do you think it's going to rain/clear up?" Avoid topics such as politics, religion or how much people earn!

    Just behave politely. Remember: When you are in England, just do as the English people do!

Hip Hop Class

    The Fullerton Community Centre is putting on an exercise class set to the sounds of hip hop music! It's great fun for anyone who wants to get fit to hip­hop！We'll exercise to disco and funk music as well. Classes are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 7 to 8 and cost 30 euros a month.

Kids' Talent Competition

    Are you good at dancing, singing, playing a musical instrument or making people laugh? The kids who are 10—16 years old are invited to take part in an exciting talent competition at 2 p.m. on Saturday, 6th August at Clearwater Shopping Centre. It's free to enter and the first prize is a trip to New York!
