In many countries, tattoos are in fashion (时尚). On TV you can often see a famous actor or musician with a tattoo on his arm or foot. Many sports players have them, too. In the US, tattoos are very popular. Forty percent of Americans aged between 26 and 40 have a tattoo, and 60 percent of customers in US tattoo parlors are women. These people are often professional people like doctor, teachers and lawyers.

However, tattoos are not modern. In fact, they are very old in human history. For example, archaeologists (考古学家) found a human in ice from 5,000 years ago. He had 57 tattoos on his back, ankles, legs, knees and feet. Tattoos were used for many different reasons. In ancient Egypt, people got tattoos because they were “beautiful”. But in ancient Rome, tattoos were negative (负面的) and put on criminals and prisoners. In India, tattoos were religious (宗教的).

In the 16^th and 17^th century, European sailors (船员) arrived on the islands of Polynesia. They saw tattoos for the first time. The people on the islands had tattoos on their shoulders, chests, backs and legs. Often the tattoos were of animals or natural features like a river or a mountain. The European sailors liked them and made their own tattoos, so the idea traveled to Europe. Tattoos in Polynesia are still important today. They show information about a person's history, their island or their job.

So is there a connection (联系) between traditional tattoos and fashionable tattoos? And can you call tattoos a fashion? Chris Rainier is an expert in tattoos and his book Ancient Marks has photos of tattoos from all over the world. He thinks people in modern societies often have tattoos because they are a connection to the traditional world. But tattoos aren't a fashion like clothes or a haircut because you can't put them on and take them off again like a jacket or a hat. They are permanent (永久的) and for life.

    ①When it comes to Chinese students thinking about studying in foreign countries, many of them usually believe that life will be easy and enjoyable. Unluckily, it seems that students with those beliefs will be disappointed very soon after landing at the airport.

    ②So, what are the problems you may have, and how can you deal with them?

    ③Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, in need of more critical thinking（批判性思维）and teamwork. In most American classrooms, they do activities in a study group in which every person has their own responsibility(责任).

    ④So don't worry about your language or any grammar mistakes. Just watch what other students do, and don't be afraid to ask any questions. The discussions, or sometimes even arguments, that your group members and you hold, are probably to be the beginning of a friendship.

    ⑤Besides schoolwork, another important thing faced by overseas students is homesickness or loneliness. You may miss your parents cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. Being away from home can create bad feelings, especially when faced with the problems of getting used to a new environment.

    ⑥What I strongly suggest is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friend-ships. Be active in school activities, and allow yourself to enjoy life at school, even if you miss home a lot. Keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you're thankful for every evening, as well as three things you're looking forward to every morning.

    ⑦Studying aboard is never simple. In fact, there will be many difficulties every day. But I'm sure you will overcome your difficulties and make your time overseas a success.

    Have you ever heard of Weifang, Shandong Province? What is it known for? There is an international kite festival every April in Weifang. It is a modern city with many traditions. People from all over the world compete in the kite flying in Weifang. There are also competitions for the best kites. The kites in the competition are all made by hand.

    Most people have flown a kite. It makes people happy. It's easy to make it. It's made of bamboo and paper. But not so many people know that kites were first made in China thousands of years ago. The ancient Chinese made and flew kites even before they could write.

    A long time ago, the Chinese made kites to use in wars. They would fly these war kites in the dark. The kites were fixed and they made strange sounds in wind. Men who were at war against them would hear these sounds and run away. They thought those strange sounds were made by gods in the sky.

    The ancient Chinese also flew kites to bring good luck and to make their crops (稻谷) grow rich and tall. Sometimes they tied long strings and hooks(绳子和钩子) to their kites. Then they would fly the kites over water, letting the hooks hang down to catch fish.

    The Chinese use sticks, string and paper for their kites. Some of these kites look like animals or trees and others look like houses.

    The Italians are famous for many things, including art, history, fashion and their style of cooking. Some of the best food in the world was created by Italians. The Italians make pizza and spaghetti, and they also make excellent desserts.

    One of my favorites is ice cream. The ice cream here is soft, delicious and very cheap. I am studying in Puglia, Italy and I have to stop myself from eating it every day. I like sitting on a park bench with a new flavor（味道）of ice cream.

    Nowadays, most of the ice cream produced in Italy is still handmade and there are lots of Italian ice cream shops around the world.

    The ice cream shops here in Puglia are open for most of the day. People can go and have an ice cream at any time, even late at night. There are so many interesting flavors that you could never possibly get bored of it. I always spend a long time looking through the glass, trying to decide what to have. I usually choose my favorite flavors. One evening though, I chose a new flavor. It translates as" English soup", which sounded funny and made me curious to taste it. The taste of the ice cream was quite strong but I enjoyed it anyway.

    I love the cold sweetness of the ice cream. Ice cream is one of my favorite things about Italian style of cooking. This year, I'm going to try as many flavors as possible.
