The Palace Museum，known as the Forbidden City, is the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (large) and most well {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (reserve) imperial (皇帝的) residence in China today. It is divided into an outer and an inner court with a rectan­gular shape, 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (wide) from east to west. It has a splendid history since the Ming Dynasty, and it {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (rebuild) and repaired many times in the past. I was so excited to visit it {#blank#}5{#/blank#} my family last summer vacation. After we passed through the Front Gate, a lot of palaces appeared. The tour guide told us there were almost 8, 700 rooms in the Palace Museum. During the Ming Dynasty, construction began in 1406. {#blank#}6{#/blank#} took 14 years to build the Forbidden City. I was {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (real) surprised that the workers could build it so well {#blank#}8{#/blank#} even today it is not out of style. I could not remember all the names of the buildings，but I took hundreds of beautiful {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (photo) on the way. I think I will never forget the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (amaze) trip I had in Beijing, China and I will go there next time with my friends. 

Bergl doesn't consider himself the next Thomas Edison, He's just a man loving animals, Africa and adventure, Yet, Bergl might have invented a tool as great as the light bulb (灯泡) ―a tool that uses modern-day technology to solve an almost prehistoric (史前) problem.

The tool is called the SMART. It is designed to be waterproof (防水的) , shockproof and poacher (偷猎者) proof. Bergl worked with worldwide wildlife groups to develop it in 2011. Since then it has been seen in more than 55 countries where poachers have forced the best-known but most endangered animals to nearly die out .

SMART works as a very simple smart phone―it lets the user record what they see, like animal sightings. changes in animals and illegal activities If a park ranger (管理员) sees something that is very important, that information can be sent to the cloud (云) and sent out to the base camp so they can take action and stop the killing 

Bergl and his workmates travel to African wildlife reserves now and then They teach park rangers in some of the most remote countries how to use SMART. "SMART makes collection of information easier It allows us to pay attention to the things that really important. according to what the information is telling an,"Aid Skim Young, manager of the Etosha National park in Namibia, "thanks to SMART, most of Africa's endangered animals seem to be coming back." 

Bergl never plans to make money from his small but great invention. SMART is free and doesn't even have a patents(专利).

In October, I told the eight-year-olds whom I taught about my plan. "I'd like all of you to do1 jobs to earn some money," I said. Then we'll buy food fora(n)2 dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise."

Early in the Thanksgiving week, the boys and girls arrived in class with their 3 money. They had set tables , washed dishes and looked after younger siblings(兄弟姐妹). And now they couldn't wait to go 4 .

I supervised(监督) while they5 up and down the supermarket aisles. At last we headed toward the 6 pushing a cart filled with a7 and other food. Then someone8 a "necessity".

" Flowers!" Kristine cried. The group ran toward the holiday plants.

I advised, "You can't9 flowers. " " But Mrs Sherlock, we want flowers." I was finally 10 .

With all those gifts, we went to visit an old woman who had lived11 for many years. When seeing the flowers, the woman seemed 12 . "Do you like them?" Michael asked. The woman brightened up and 13 .

[ After a happy moment, we had to leave. Sitting in the 14 , we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye , then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, straight to the flowers. She put her 15 in them. When she raised her head , there was a smile on her lips. ]

At my first lesson in Chinese calligraphy, my teacher told me plainly: "Now I will teach you how to write your name. And to make it beautiful." I felt my breath catch. I was curious.

Growing up in Singapore, I had an unusual relationship with my Chinese name. My parents are ethnically Chinese, so they asked fortune tellers to decide my name, aiming for maximum luck. As a result, I ended up with a nonsense and embarrassing name: Chen Yiwen, meaning, roughly, "old", "barley （薏米） "and "warm".

When I arrived in America for college at 18, I put on an American accent and abandoned my Chinese name. When I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, after 14 years in the States, I decided to learn calligraphy. Why not get back in touch with my heritage? I thought.

In calligraphy, the idea is to copy the old masters' techniques, thereby refining your own. Every week, though, my teacher would give uncomfortably on-the-nose assessments of my person. "You need to be braver," he once observed. "Have confidence. Try to produce a bold stroke （笔画）." For years, I had prided myself on presenting an image of confidence, but my writing betrayed me.

I was trying to make sense of this practice. You must visualize the word as it is to be written and leave a trace of yourself in it. As a bodily practice, calligraphy could go beyond its own cultural restrictions. Could it help me go beyond mine? My teacher once said to me, "When you look at the word, you see the body. Though a word on the page is two-dimensional, it contains multitudes, conveying the force you've applied, the energy of your grip, the arch of your spine." I had been learning calligraphy to get in touch with my cultural roots, but what I was really seeking was a return to myself. Now I have sensed that the pleasure out of calligraphy allows me to know myself more fully.

During a recent lesson, my teacher pointed at the word I had just finished, telling me: "This word is much better. I can see the choices you made, your calculations, your flow. Trust yourself. This word is yours." He might as well have said, "This word is you."

I was heading back home after giving my colleague a lift. I took a  1  as the snowstorm was approaching.

Then the snow started and was coming down  2 . Within minutes I was in a whiteout. The windows were 3 and getting covered with snow, so I slowed down and rolled down my driver's side window, thinking I could better 4 the road edge and keep to a straight line. But really, I had no  5  where I was. I stopped and kept the car running to stay 6  . I called 911. The operator told me to wait things out for the night.

The call left me in  7 . "Breathe," I told myself. An idea occurred to me. I 8  my location online and explained what I was  9 , wishing for anyone to come to my rescue. Soon enough, people started chiming in on my post. I got a 10 from someone who was going to put me in touch with people nearby. I had never been more  11 .

Then I saw a big 12  in the dark. He had walked about 500 meters to get me, 13  the wind and snow each step of the way. "You'll be OK. Follow me." He turned around and started to trudge through the snow, sure of the 14 . I drove slowly behind him. When we reached his house, I burst into tears of 15 .

My grandfather was born in a small town in Italy. He would wake up at four in the morning every day to work on the farm. Although he was a great student in school, he only went up to Grade 3 because he was required to help with the family farm. 

Later, my grandfather used his own hard-earned savings—the small amount was all he had—to travel to Canada. He was alone in a new country, not knowing anyone and not speaking English or French. At a farm, the owner quickly saw what a hard-working young man my grandfather was, so he paid my grandfather a much higher salary. Although the owner was very nice to him and treated him like family, he was not satisfied. He dreamed of being more successful, of better career advancements. 

One day, he got an offer to work in the construction industry. My grandfather, a newly immigrated young famer, who was eager to move up in the world, caught this opportunity and prospered( 发达 ) through hard work. Around 1967, however, he become overwhelmed(不知所措的)with stress, sleepless nights and anxiety from the business. He also had two young daughters to take care of and my grandmother was in the hospital at the time. The combined stress and anxiety unfortunately drove him into a major depression. During a medical check-up, his doctor warned him about his health. He knew it was time for him to make a change and decided to sell his shares in the company. 

He then began a smaller business of his own, which resulted in less stress and more time with family. Had he chosen not to quit his former job, he might have been a billionaire today. My grandfather will turn 95 in October; even at this ripe old age, he is still strong, well and high-spirited. Looking at his story as a life example, he teaches us to work hard, but at the same time not to forget to enjoy life and have a good sense of humour about it all. 

Work is important, sure, but there is much more to life than just that. Overall, this is the ultimate key to happiness.
