A man and his wife were very poor. They kept hoping for new clothes and good food. The man enjoyed eating and he especially liked pancakes. One night a young woman came to their house and told them that she would let them have three wishes. They could wish for anything they wanted.

The man had just finished eating a little bread for his dinner and he was still hungry. He said,"I wish I had a big pancake!"

Suddenly there was a pancake on his plate.

"You fool!" his wife cried. "You could wish for a house full of wonderful food, but you wished for a pancake. I wish that pancake was on the end of your foolish nose."

Immediately (立即) the pancake was on the end of the man's nose.

Then the man and his wife started blaming (责备) each other. "It's your fault!" the man cried. "No, it's your fault!" she answered. What could they do? The pancake was still on the husband's nose.

"Oh!" the wife cried. "I wish none of this had ever happened!"

Immediately the pancake was gone, and the man was saying, "I'm still hungry. How I wish I had some pancakes!"

But of course nothing happened.

"I killed the wrong goose (鹅), " a man complained in his letter about the Xinhua Dictionary. It was the 1970s. The man wanted to kill a male goose. He didn't know the difference between male and female goose, so he turned to the dictionary for help. It read, "The male geese have a yellow bump on their head."

The man chose a goose that matched the description. But when he opened its stomach, many eggs poured out, and the man was angry. 

The dictionary wasn't totally wrong. However, it didn't make it clear that all geese have a yellow bump on their head. Males have just bigger ones. The dictionary's editors corrected it in the next edition (版本) . 

Since its birth in 1953, the Xinhua Dictionary has been used as an encyclopedia (百科全书) by people across China. More than 600 million copies have been sold. 

In 1949, about 80 percent of China's population was uneducated. Xinhua Dictionary succeeded in opening up knowledge to millions of Chinese people. "I had no education when I was little. The dictionary helped me get into high school. " Said a woman in her 50s. 

Over the past 50 years, the dictionary has been improved in each edition. "鲟"was once explained as"can be eaten". Later editions made it clear that it was "an animal in danger". The meaning of "豹"is no longer "wild animals whose fur can be made into clothes". New editions have included many new meanings. The character "晒" (to dry something under the sun) , for example, now has a second meaning: to share. Popular expressions like "初心"have also been added to dictionary. 

In a way, Xinhua hasn't just explained words; it has shaped the way Chinese people think. According to an article in Southern Weekly, "When children write about a spring outing, the sky is always ‘cloudless for ten thousand miles'. They will always ‘sing and dance' on the way. " "Both sentences, " the editor added, " are from examples in the Xinhua Dictionary."

Zhu Xiangbing has been teaching at the Dongxi Primary School in the mountains of Hubei Province for 39 years. He has helped over 200 students get out of the mountains.

Back in 1984, Zhu graduated from middle school and was preparing to take the exam to enter high school. One day, the leader of his village came to visit him and asked if he would like to be the teacher at the village's primary school. It was a hard decision for Zhu to make. Accepting the job meant he would not be able to leave the village, but if he refused the offer, the students there would be left with no teacher.

After spending a whole night thinking, Zhu decided to take the offer. Then he began to work hard to learn teaching skills. Besides learning from his own teachers, he also taught himself in his spare time. Quickly, Zhu became a good teacher. Zhu often walks for several hours on mountain roads to visit his students' homes. He encourages them to study hard. With his help, more than 30 students from poor families have been able to go to school and receive education.

Because of the school's terrible working and living conditions, many teachers don't want to stay there. To get them to stay, Zhu tries his best to make them feel at home. He often invites them to live and eat in his house.

Over the years, Zhu has had many opportunities (机会) to leave the village, but he has turned all of them down. "I want to stay and help more young teachers grow and take root (扎根) here so that our kids can get a good education," he said.

④However, there is still something robots can't do. For example, they don't have human feelings or creativity. Unable to think independently, they can only follow programmed instructions. Also, they are usually expensive to produce.

⑤As modern technology improves, robots will become more intelligent in the near future, and people will live an easier and more comfortable life.

Scientists once did an interesting study. They put a mother in one place. They put her two-year-old child in another place. There was a telephone line between them. Soon, the mother and child were talking to each other. The mother and child, in this science study. were dolphins.

Dolphins are interesting animals. Many types of dolphins live in large ties. They have many different relationships and need a good communication system That explains why they need to speak up.

Scientists have known for a long time that animals can "talk" with each other. But dolphins have a special way of talking When they are in a group, they mainly use different sounds to express purposes. Scientists believe that the dolphins really are talking. However, they don't know what exactly the dolphins are saying.

Recently at Kewalo University in Hawaii, researchers have had some amazing results. Not only do the dolphins understand the meaning of human words, they also understand the importance of word order. For example, when they were asked to "touch the ball with your tail and then jump over it", they could perform the actions in the correct order.

Dolphins use body language, too. They "tell" something to another dolphin by moving their body in a special way. They also do it by opening and closing their mouths quickly.

Scientists hope to understand more about the dolphin language. They still have a lot to find out about these animals and so there are certain to be a few surprises in the future.
