AI could make it less necessary to learn a foreign language. That's good news for travelers, but bad news for soulful connection. Travel has long been one of the reasons for study unless people start to feel AI tools offer a good enough service. 

Some are worried that apps are turning language learning into a weakening need. Douglas Hofstadter, a writer, has argued that something important will disappear when people talk through machines. He describes giving a not so fluent (流畅的) speech in Chinese, which required a lot of work but offered a great sense of achievement in the end. Who would show off taking a plane to the top of Mount Everest? 

  ★  They don't take the weakening as a big deal. Most people do not move abroad or have the kind of continual contact with a foreign culture that requires them to put in the effort to become fluent. Nor do most people learn languages for the purpose of developing themselves or training their brains. On their holiday, they just want a beer or pizza. 

As AI translation becomes a more popular labor-saving tool, people will divide into two groups, just as the above. There will be those who want to challenge their minds, put themselves in other cultures or force their thinking into new ways. This group will take on language learning, often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a mix of admiration and confusion, as they might say with extreme sports (极限运动): "Good for you, if that's your thing, but a bit painful for my taste."

However, a focus on the learner alone misses the basically social nature of language. It is a bit like discussing the advantages of close relationship to heart health but turning a blind eye to the inner value of those bonds themselves. When you try to ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in simple German, you are making direct communication with someone. And when you speak a language well enough to tell a story with perfect timing or put stress on an argument, that connection is till deeper. 

About 1 in every 160 children has autism（自闭症）. Lots of people are working hard to help those children. And luckily, there are also robots helping them. 

Catherine, a Hong Kong professor, has developed an educational programme. It uses role-playing robots. The programme, Robot for Autism Behavioral Intervention（RABI), is for children with autism between the ages of 3 and 18. Its purpose is to help them be more social（社会的）. According to Catherine, more than 1, 200 children have taken part in the programme since it was started in2015.

As we know, it is tough for people with autism to communicate with others. Others can't understand what they want to say easily. So they feel worried or nervous about half of the time. The robots teach them social skills to make them less nervous. In a typical class, two small robots act out social conversations on a table. It helps the children see the difference between proper and unacceptable behavior. After that, the daughter has been in the programme for seven months. Her social and communicative skills have improved a lot. 

More than 20 non-profit（非盈利的）groups and public schools in Hong Kong and Macao have joined the programme and helped develop it. Catherine hopes the programme can help more children with autism. 

① ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot（聊天机器人）tool, has swept the education world in the past months. According to a US survey of more than 1, 000 students, over89 percent of them have used ChatGPT to help with their homework. 

② Some schools in the US, Australia and France have banned（禁止）the use of ChatGPT. In the US, for example, New York City public schools banned students and teachers from using ChatGPT on the district's networks. 

③The move comes out of worries that the tool could make it easier for students to cheat on homework. Some also worry that ChatGPT could be used to spread incorrect information. 

④Besides bans, teachers are making changes to their classes to avoid the use of ChatGPT. Some college teachers in the US try to include more speaking exams and handwritten papers instead of typed ones. 

⑤ However, not all educators say "no" to ChatGPT. Some Canadian universities are making laws on its use, for both students and teachers. They have no plans to completely ban the tool so far. 

⑥ Bhaskar Vira from the University of Cambridge, said that bans on AI software like ChatGPT are not sensible（明智的）. "We have to know that AI is a tool people will use. What we need to do is to' adapt our learning, teaching and examinations'. That way, we can be honest while using of the tool".

 Some people think Chatbots are useful to help students {#blank#}2{#/blank#} their study. They can give answers to {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( them) questions. They can guide (引导) students with questions. Chatbots can work seven days a week and twenty-four {#blank#}4{#/blank#} ( hour) a day. They can work with teachers, too. They can help teachers do lesson plans.

 However, Chatbots {#blank#}5{#/blank#}( be) not always useful. Students need {#blank#}6{#/blank#} ( learn) things about computer first. They may use computers later, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} now they learn penmanship (书法) and spelling at school. Some teachers do not use AI programs {#blank#}8{#/blank#}( good), so they can't get much help from them for their teaching and students. AI programs do not have human connection(人类连接). Students need that in their school life. A Chatbot only {#blank#}9{#/blank#} ( give) students answers. {#blank#}10{#/blank#} teacher knows how to help students get answers.
