Daniel Hove spent years serving his community in Wisconsin as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Burnsville Fire Department. In 2012, he 1 from the job he loved after doctors diagnosed him with pancreatic（胰腺的） cancer.

Daniel spent years fighting the 2 disease. And he had tons of 3 from friends and family. But his beloved 11-year-old Labrador （拉布拉多猎犬）, Gunner,4 by his side every step of the way.

As Daniel's 5 grew more difficult, Gunner became ill, too. And he 6 the highs and lows right along with his favorite human.

"When my dad would get restless, the dog would be 7 ," Daniel's daughter Heather explained. "So once we 8 how the dog was doing—he wasn't moving much anymore and not doing well—we knew, it was coming."

As Gunner's suffering hit its peak, Heather 9 knew the dog's time on Earth was done. Gunner was 10 an animal hospital where the veterinarian put him to 11 forever. And soon after Gunner passed away, Daniel found his 12 was close. About an hour and a half later, Daniel was gone too.13 in life, the dog and his beloved owner also remained that way in death.

Special friends are placed in our lives. And the story of this dog and his owner is a beautiful 14 that sometimes those furry friends offer lifelong 15 without words.

Some Ohio high school students have become winners in a national contest (竞赛) after inventing a mobile phone app that helps needy families find local food pantries (公益食品仓库).

And someday the teens, who are students at Ross High School in Ross Township, may be selling the app to food pantries and food banks across America.

The app was created as part of a computer science class — coordinated (协调) by Butler Tech career school system at the high school. Three students, Jacob Kahmann, Gunner Nonnamaker and Kyle Inderhees, recently were visited by Congressman Warren Davidson, who praised their work. Davidson lauded the teens for creating "this app to set the standard for efficient food collection and distribution (分发)".

Butler Tech IT Instructor Tom O'Neill said the students' app includes characteristics that help users locate the nearest food pantry and improve food collection processes, and that the national contest provides a real-life learning chance for his students.

The students are continuing to make additions to the app and are working on turning it into a product, said O'Neill, who in recent years has helped many Ross High School teens win national honors for their computer-science-based inventions.

"The teachers and students in the Ross School District continue to amaze me with their future-thinking and creation," said Superintendent Scott Gates. "Our students are not only thinking about careers, they are thinking about problems they want to change, solve or improve. The app that was created will make serving a population in need more efficient."

One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along his route. No problems for the first few stops—a few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well.

At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six feet eight, built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the driver and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" and sat down at the back. The driver was five feet three, thin, and basically mild-mannered. Naturally, he didn't argue with Big John, but he wasn't happy about it.

The next day the same thing happened—Big John got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the one after that, and so forth.

This grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of him. Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff. By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong—what's more, felt really good about himself.

So on the next Monday, when Big John once again got on the bus and said. "Big John doesn't pay!" the driver stood up, glared back at the passenger, and screamed, "Oh, yeah? And why not?" With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, "Big John has a bus pass."

Have you ever felt the need to grab a pen and start writing your thoughts on paper? Words—beautiful and fascinating. But you know what is better than putting your imagination somewhere? In my case, to win the competition for the best novelist.

That was a small tournament organized by my school annually to 1 our creative writing and vivid imagination. Since I had a burning passion for 2 , I decided to show my power. I thought no one could 3 me.

I finished a long story and e-mailed it. As I 4 the email every day, my eyes were wandering to 5 the line "Congratulations! It is a great pleasure to inform you that…". 6 , no such thing came.

I was not accepted. I 7 my abilities. The next day at school, I tried my best to be 8 , avoiding the usual contact. But in the corridor, I 9 Stacy Williams, my school rival. Could she be the 10 ? I started walking sneakily. In class, I was just looking out of the window at the 11 clouds which were a reflection of my soul.

Thankfully, a film that night—Forrest Gump lifted my 12 . I wouldn't let a stupid competition 13 my future. I could win on the next one or even at a better tournament. The important thing was to 14 my head and face my challenges without losing hope when everything seemed 15 .

A visually-challenged man from Beijing recently hiked (徒步) 40 days to Xi'an, as a first step {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (journey) the Belt and Road route (路线) by foot. 

On the 1,100 kilometer journey, the man Cao Shengkang, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} lost his eyesight at the age of eight in a car accident, crossed 40 cities and counties in three province. Inspired by the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (hold) in Beijing, Cao decided to cover the route by hiking as a tribute (致敬) to the ancient Silk Road. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} friend of his, Wu Fan, volunteered to be his companion during the trip. 

Cao and Wu also collected garbage along the road, in order to promote environmental {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (protect). Cao believes this will make the hiking trip even more {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (meaning). The two of them collected more than 1,000 plastic bottles along the 40-day journey. 

In the last five years. Cao {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (walk) through 34 countries in six continents, and in 2016, he reached the top of Kilimanjaro, Africa's {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (high) mountain. 

Now, Cao has started the second part of his dream to walk along the Belt and Road route. He flew 4, 700 kilometers {#blank#}9{#/blank#} Xi'an to Kashgar on Sept. 20, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (plan) to hike back to Xi'an in five months.

Soon after my arrival in Luanda, I realized that I was going to have some free time available. I decided to spend it doing something useful and taking part in activities in the1 community. I started my search for volunteering opportunities here and a blog post2 my eye. It was Asthma's3 on how she started her4 journey in Luanda. Asthma has been volunteering at the Foundation(基金会) for Art and Culture for more than a year. I decided to get in touch with them and soon after I got a very warm and welcoming5 inviting me to the foundation. The next day as I6 into the foundation little did I know it would become such a(n)7 part of my life in Luanda.

I was a bit hesitant at first as I had never worked with children before and my Portuguese (葡萄牙语) then was much8 than now. But as I slowly started doing some activities with children, there were not any9 . All that you needed was a heart full of lóve and everyone10 the language of love.

I found plenty of11 to do with kids, keeping them busy and having fun. Together we played, sang, learned new things,12 new games and renewed the old. The children coming to the foundation are wonderful, and full of13 and energy. It is a beautiful place with wonderful projects. Without doubt, it is the best14 I could have found in Luanda, and I am very happy to go there as often as I can. The staff working there really make you feel welcome and15 .
