Sam was just three yearsold when he came up3his idea. He saw his father sweep up gardenleaves and change brooms while trying4largeleaves and litter.
Now he is5posterboy for a new show at the British Library in London called "Inventing the 21stCentury". To celebrate inventions and encourage new inventors, the famous libraryis telling the story of6inventions coming out of Britain in thepast 10 years. Sam's broom7by big companies, and the brooms are verypopular in England.
Young Sam Houghton is noweight years old and has another invention. He has made a balloon popping machine(气球爆破装置) for play centers. He said, "Wedon't want children to cry because of8bangs(爆炸声) of balloons. I used a box to take away the bangs9theycan't scare (惊吓) the children."
Have you ever wanted tobe a great inventor? Watch10, think it over and work hard. Maybe youwill be an inventor. Do you think so?
My parents always told me that I couldn't dance, because it was a girl's sport. But I never1 my dream of becoming a dancing star. I practiced2, learning from books, movies, and shows. However, without my parents'3, that dream seemed impossible to achieve. One summer, my little sister Mary was going to dance lessons. I immediately offeredto take her to the lessons. What a good4 to learn dancing!
One day Mary asked me to dance with her in theschool dancing competition, because5 of the boys in her class would like to do that. They thought she was slow. "You can be a good dancer!" I6 her." Let's show those peoplethat they are wrong!" In the following months, we practiced every evening, still hiding from our parents.
Finallycame the big day. I became7 whenI saw my parents watching the competition. But as the music began, I took a deepbreath and tried to put my heart into the dance. We moved perfectly, shining withpride. From the8of the crowd, I was sure we had done a goodjob.
When we got off the stage, my father came towardsme. He put his hand on my shoulder. "Well done, Son. I have to say you are9 todance. Go for it and make us proud."
Everyone has to go through lots of difficulties10he achieves his dream. I know that the roadahead won't be easy, but I will not be afraid any more.

A caterpillar(毛毛虫) that eats plastic bags could hold the key to solving plastic pollution, scientists say. Researchers at Cambridge University have discovered that the caterpillarwhich eats beeswax(蜂蜡), can also degrade(降解) plastic.
Experiments show the insectcan break down the chemical bonds(键) of plasticin a similar way to absorb beeswax. Each year, about 80 million tons of the plasticare produced around the world. The plastic is used to make shopping bags, food packaging,one-off raincoat and other things, but it can take hundreds of years to degradecompletely.
However, caterpillars canmake holes in a plastic bag in under an hour. "The caterpillar will be thestarting point. We need to understand the details under which this process operates. We hope to provide the technical solution to cutting down the problem of plasticwaste," the scientist said. And the scientists who discovered it want to speedup the process of discovering the chemical secrets behind the natural degradationof plastic. They think something in the caterpillar—as well as the insect itself—mightplay a role in breaking down plastic.
If the chemical processcan be found out, it could lead to a solution to managing plastic waste in the environment."We are planning to use this finding in a practical way to get rid of plasticwaste, working towards a solution to saving our oceans and rivers," said thescientist. "However, we should not feel good todumpplasticon purpose in our environment just because we now know how to degrade it."
Now paper waste is a big problem in schools. Many students throw away paper before they make full use of it. Most people choose to spend their weekends on the beach. But they often leave the rubbish on the beach. Each year there are an increasing number of cars on the road. As a result, the air pollution caused by cars is becoming more and more serious. The problem of wasting electricity is common. People leave lights, the TV and other electrical products on even when they don't use them. Most people waste water badly. They usually have a longtime shower and leave the water running when they wash things. |
A.To stop the world from being polluted by cars, we have to make some changes. For example, we can go out by bus or by underground. B. You can call on some students to clean the parks in your city. It's also a good idea to put up some "No Littering" signs in the parks. C. Always keep in mind that electricity should be cut off before you leave. You'll not only save money but also save energy by doing so. D. Here are two pieces of advice on how to save water in our daily life. Don't leave the tap(水龙头) on when washing or brushing. Take a short shower instead of a long one. E. The rubbish on the beach can be swept into the sea. And all kinds of rubbish will put animals in the sea in danger. Always collect rubbish on the beach and never throw rubbish into the sea. F. Saving paper is a good way to save trees and protect the earth. Students should use both sides of paper. They should also form the habit of sorting(整理) the rubbish so that the waste paper can be recycled. G. Saving forests also helps a lot. Forests are useful. Please stop cutting them down and plant more trees and plants every year. Make our world a green one to live in. |
Many years ago, a girl with a red birthmark (胎记) came to my classroom. She was so ugly that the whole class all kinds of tricks on her. I had even taken the lead in laughing at her.
But she didn't mind at all. she was always smiling at all of us. She did a good at all her subjects. At a class meeting, she was chosen as representative(代表) of excellent students to speak in front of the class.
"My mother told me that I was a child kissed God. He wanted to put a mark on my face so that he could remember me. He loved me and cared for me with all heart. I've been very lucky since I born. You see I got the first place in the exam this time. I have no to decide what I look, but I can decide what I want to be. If I look at the world with tender(温柔的)eyes, I will feel lucky and happy. If I look at the world with unfriendly mind, I will feel and sad," she said.
I was ashamed of what I had done. I laughing at her before. She made me understand: what kind of mental world a person has, what kind of life she will have. We can't change the world, the world is what your heart is like.
In the past ten years, the use of social media has grown in a way that no one could have guessed.
A main feature of socialmedia is its volatility(易变). Trends(流行)come and go, disappearing almost as quickly as they appear. So, whatwere the main social media trends of 2018?
Short video apps, suchas Tik Tok and Douyin, took the world by storm. The Telegraph reported that TikTok was the 8th on Apple's App Store in April. And Douyin had more than 300 millionactive users in June in China, CNBC said.
The sense of communitythat users of short video apps get is another main feature. Liza Koshy, a user ofthe US app Musically who has over 2 million followers, said that she was very excitedwhen anyone said that her video had "encouraged" them. "It's reallycool because I think as social creators that's what we all are," she added.
Live streaming(直播)is a feature of our social media life that now seems as natural as sunrise. It's a pretty good idea—you can watch anyone, anywhere, live.
China has taken live streamingto a whole new level. More than 100 million Chinese people monthly watch a livestreaming video. Forbes thought that a number of reasons had led to the popularityof live streams. One of the most important reasons is that people don't have toknow their real names.
Although we use socialmedia all the time, that doesn't mean that we understand the influence it is havingon us. We should pay attention to both the time we spend on it and its influenceon our minds.
