What's your feeling when you step into senior high school? It is a completely new experience, but you shouldn't worry. We've got some tips to help you.
You're not alone
Remember that everybody else in your grade is in the same boat. You may not notice it, but they're just as nervous as you are.
Moving up to senior high school is a chance, not a problem. Things are different, and all you need to do is to be polite and learn the new rules.
The teachers will help you
If you don't know what to do or are worried about something, then ask for help. Teachers are probably the best people to turn to because they have experience in helping new students. Pay attention to what your teachers say.
Everything changes
There are lots of differences between junior high school and senior high school. You will you're your lessons with different teachers in different schools. You will have homework for different subjects on different days, so make sure you get organized.
Other points
If you've got an elder brother or sister at senior high school, then ask them for advice. Be yourself! It sounds simple, but things will become much better if you just act naturally.
Going to bed early makes a difference. You'll also find it easier to get up in the morning!
Body language is the "silence language" of every culture. It is important to know the body language of every country, or we may be misunderstood.
In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm. If the handshake is weak, it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness. Friends may place a hand on the other's arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two or a half feet away and at an angle, so they are not facing each other directly. Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say "Pardon me" or "Excuse me".
Americans like to look the other person in the eye when they are talking. If you don't do so, it means you are bored, hiding something, or are not interested. But when you stare at someone, it is not polite.
Learning a culture's body language is sometimes confusing. If you don't know what to do, the safest thing to do is to smile.
Have you ever thought that music can have an effect on animals? Dr. Fisher has put music in over 1,100 animal shelters, saying that it makes dogs and cats quiet and even cuts down on barking. Fisher asked artists around the world to share dog-and-cat friendly music. She gives it free to animal shelters.
One fan was Tina. Winter temperatures at the rural shelter for six dogs and six cats usually ran below zero and the wind blew nearly every day. To calm the animals, Tina tried the radio. Besides poor reception, the news and sports had people shouting and crying loudly. "The difference is great." she said. So she and her husband had to buy a second player for the cats. "When we play songs they like, they go and sit by the speakers." Tina said.
No one has studied the impact of Fisher's music idea. But others have looked at how music and noise in general affected animals. A study found that animals were more likely to sleep and less likely to bark when Mozart, Beethoven and other similar music were playing, but not when heavy metal and other sounds were.
A survey of more than 500 shelters guided by Fisher validated her idea, finding barking reduced by half and animals more relaxed. It just destresses them.
Beyond the music, the shelter staff do what they can to reduce stress for the dogs, including toys, food and spending time with them. "Reducing their stress helps them show off their personalities and they can get adapted more quickly," said Fisher. "The music also helps relax staff members and that benefits the animals too."
You have probably heard the saying," When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Since lemons are considered bitter and lemonade is considered sweet, the saying tells you to make the best out of a bad Situation.
Unfortunately, when something bad happens, it's not uncommon for most people to talk about it to anyone who'll listen, and complain about life, "Why me?" That's like getting a bag of lemons, putting them down, and thinking, "Lemons taste bad! I'd rather have chocolate!" If you don't make anything with the lemons, they will go bad. But what if you did something with them? What if you made lemonade? Isn't it possible to do something similar with a bad situation?
Here's an example. Let's say you're about to go to the movies, but you discover you have a flat tire (瘪胎). You consider this a terrible thing. After all, you are really looking forward to spending some time with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Now you're all stressed out, hating the tire, the car, and your life. But what if you called AAA, got your tire fixed or got caught up on things that you'd been meaning to do? What if you did some reading, or had coffee with a friend instead? A negative experience can be turned into something positive. Almost anything can work itself out into something better. You can't change what has happened, right? So make the best of it. I'm not saying it will be easy. The easy thing to do is complain about your bad situation and not consider what it could be turned into.
Next time when some unfortunate things happen, stop and think, "How can I tum this around? How can I make it a positive experience? You needn't fear difficulties. As long as you keep on changing it, you will see the benefits (好处) at last.
