Three men have lunch together. But when the lunch is over, the men don't agree on who should pay for the food. So, like little boys, they play a game called rock-paper-scissors. People sometimes play this fun game when they have to 1 something or someone but they have no idea about how to make the decision.
In this game, a 2 hand means a rock, an open hand means a piece of paper, and a hand with two fingers out means scissors. We all know 3 this is played. Paper can cover a rock, so rock loses to 4; scissors will break if they try to cut a rock, so scissors lose to rock; and scissors can cut paper, so paper loses to scissors.
It seems that everyone 5 this game, but many people do not know where it came from.
People first started playing a game6 rock-paper-scissors in ancient China. During the Han Dynasty, people played a game called shoushiling (手势令).In this 7, people used hand gestures like those in today's game. 8 their gestures meant different kinds of animals. The modern form of rock-paper-scissors was 9 in Japan.
Today, this game has 10 become popular around the world. Scientists are even studying it to find out its secrets.
At the opening of the sports meeting, our class was chosen to be the team holding colorful flags.
At firsts I thought we were lucky, because this work seemed so simple that we could finish it easily. Each of us only needed to hold a flag of different color. However, the work was not as easy as I thought. There were two weeks for us to practice before the sports meeting. During this time, all the classmates were trained strictly. We practiced walking, holding the flags and standing still without moving for one or two hours.
Finally, the day came. At the opening of the sports meeting, we were the first class to appear. As we went through the platform (主席台), we shouted out our saying loudly when we walked through step by step, holding different colorful flags. As we arrived at our place we formed two lines and started running along the sides of the playground. At last, all of the classmates stood one by one, holding the flags and circling the whole playground. When the wind flew, our colorful flags flew. How beautiful!
After that, other classes put on many wonderful shows, but we couldn't see anything. What's worse, we had to stand the whole time until the whole opening finished, which meant that we stood for three hours without any break!
This experience made me realize that we cannot tell the difficulty only by the appearance of a job.
a. The writer' class circled the whole playground.
b. The writer's class formed two lines.
c. The writer's class ran along the sides of the playground.
d. The writer's class went through the platform.
Do your eyes jump a few times a second over a period of time? A jumping eye can happen to anybody at any time. There are several reasons for a jumping eye. Let's have a look at it!
Tiredness Not getting enough sleep or working for too long without rest may cause our eye to complain. Scientists aren't sure why, but they've found that getting more rest will make our eyes feel better. Remember not to stay up late. |
Dry eyes More and more people work office jobs that require a lot of sitting and staring at a computer screen. This unhealthy way of life can lead to dry eye syndrome (DES干眼症) When our eyes are too dry, they can't help jumping to keep them wet. To stay away from DES, use eye drops if you use the computer for more than seven hours a day and make sure to look away from the screen once every 20 minutes. |
Stress(压力) This is the number-one reason for a jumping eye. It does harm to our eyes if it lasts for too long. When we' re under a lot of stress, the body gives out stress hormones (荷尔蒙) which leads to a “fight or flight” response. To solve the problem, we can see our friends or relax ourselves In order to reduce the stress that might lead to jumping eyes. |
Apple has created a new robot named Daisy that can break a dead iPhone into pieces and find out valuable materials such as silver and tungsten (钨) in order to protect the environment.
The robot can break up a dead phone in just 18 seconds and is a new type for Liam, another recycling robot Apple announced in 2016. Liam had 29 arms and could break iPhone into pieces within just 11 seconds.
Daisy is able to break up 9 kinds of the iPhone, grouping them into usable parts. And it can find out valuable materials that traditional robots can't do.
Without being stopped. Daisy is likely to do with over 1 million phones per year, a small part of the more than 2017 million phones Apple sold in 2017. The machine is programmed to carefully break up the many pieces of returned iPhones, including SIM card plates, batteries and cameras.
It does this by taking away different parts of the iPhone bit by bit so they are all easier to recycle, separating out the valuable silver, tungsten and other parts. Computers made by other companies seem to be easier to break up. However. Apple does not make it public how many of its dead phones are recycled every year.
All primary and junior high schools in Shenzhen are required to provide lunch and noon services (服务) for students in need within the next three years, according to the next education bureau (教有局) recently.
According to some interviews, the decision is favored by parents, but many teachers do not welcome it because it might make their noon time less.
In China, most schools have a noon break from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. During this time, students need to leave their school. Now, only some schools provide lunch and places for students to rest during the break.
Some parents were very pleased and were willing to do the voluntary work helping the school offer the service as soon as possible. “If both parents need to work, it is very tiring for parents to pick up their kids and make them lunch.” said one of them. However it requires teachers to work more, although a daily pay of 160 yuan (US$23.59) is given to the teachers on duty. A public school teacher said the work should be given to professionals (专业人士) as teachers also need to take a break at noon.
The report also pointed out difficulties in providing lunch, because many schools don't have enough space to build the school cafe for students. Some schools have to work with other restaurants to provide lunch. Food safety might be another problem then.
Mikell Brown lives in New York and works at home. As a mother of two little girls, she spends much of the day taking care of her children. But she also teaches English to children in China from her computer. Brown has worked for online English-learning app VIPKID for one year.
In an online class of VIPKID, children can talk in English with native speaker teachersfrom America face-to-face quite well. Even if the children are born to speak Cantonese or Mandarin (普通话), they have no difficulty communicating with the teachers. The online education market in China is growing every year. More than half of Chinese parents have bought online classes for their children.
Yao Shuwen, CEO of DADA, another online English-learning company explains the reasons why China's online education market is growing fast. “First of all, more parents want their children to grow up with a global vision (视野). Secondly, parents are spending more on children's education. Besides, more people are accepting online products. Last, the second-child policy (政策) also helps to the growth of the market.”
Nowadays, one popular mobile app for online education is Zuoyebang. It helps junior high school students with their homework. But a new area in online education is now getting more popular, science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). By 2020, around 50 million parents plan to send their children to learn from the online apps like VIPCODE.
We sat on the swing (秋千) enjoying the fresh summer air. Cody, my 6-year-old brother laughed, because he could swing (high) than me. I (make) to smile by his laugh.
After that, we went for a walk, looking at the garden. As we (walk), Cody looked up at me and said, “Today is the best day for me”. I smiled at him (happy) and answered, “Yes, it is a great day”. I then started thinking about what we did that day. We didn't do anything special. It was just simple day. We went for walks and swung on the swing.
So often, we wait our “best days” without realizing that “today is our best day”. We often forget to enjoy (live) the life today. We should be more like children they truly live in the moment. They don't need expensive things to make (they) happy.
It's important for us (remember) this and enjoy each da. You're your child-like heart of living each moment to its fullest.
