阅读理解

All primary and junior high schools in Shenzhen are required to provide lunch and noon services (服务) for students in need within the next three years, according to the next education bureau (教有局) recently.

According to some interviews, the decision is favored by parents, but many teachers do not welcome it because it might make their noon time less.

In China, most schools have a noon break from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. During this time, students need to leave their school. Now, only some schools provide lunch and places for students to rest during the break.

Some parents were very pleased and were willing to do the voluntary work helping the school offer the service as soon as possible. “If both parents need to work, it is very tiring for parents to pick up their kids and make them lunch.” said one of them. However it requires teachers to work more, although a daily pay of 160 yuan (US$23.59) is given to the teachers on duty. A public school teacher said the work should be given to professionals (专业人士) as teachers also need to take a break at noon.

The report also pointed out difficulties in providing lunch, because many schools don't have enough space to build the school cafe for students. Some schools have to work with other restaurants to provide lunch. Food safety might be another problem then.

Stanford is a world-famous university on the west coast of the US. It was built by Stanford and his wife in memory of their only son who died of a strange disease.

Tourists are often surprised at the beauty of Stanford. Among the green trees, buildings with yellow walls and red tops make up a beautiful picture.

Many tourists wonder why yellow and red were chosen. That's because they were the favorites of Mrs. Stanford.

The Big Church is the most important building in Stanford. It stands at the center. It was built by Mrs. Stanford to remember her husband who devoted(贡献 ) himself to the university. There, students and teachers can hold great activities, such as concerts and celebrations.

The tallest building in Stanford is Hoover Tower, which is the landmark of the university. A man named Hoover had done a lot for the university. The things he once used can be seen on the first floor. On the top of the tower,tourists can have a good look at the whole campus(校园).

As one of the world top universities, Stanford has many subjects that stand among the top ones in the world. And computer science has been the first for many years. If you want to study computer science in a university abroad,maybe it is your best choice.

What was school like in ancient times? In Greece, 2,500 years ago, students used to get up at dawn to go to school. Classes began very early and ended when it was dark. Students didn't rest on weekends. They had classes seven days a week, so they didn't have much time for anything else. In Athens, only the sons of rich people went to school, and they started school around the age of seven. After they learned to read and write, they used to study Greek poems and historical works. Music was very important, and physical training was also important. Teachers used to hit students who didn't pay attention or were lazy. Girls stayed at home with their mothers and learned how to do housework.

In ancient Rome, boys and girls from wealthy families received a bilingual(双语) education. They had to study Greek and Latin. Students usually had classes outside, if the weather was good, or in the teacher's house. Young students sat on the floor. Older students used to sit on benches, higher up. That's how "high school"got its name.

Education was very important to the ancient Aztecs of Mexico. Boys and girls used to attend school, but they were kept in different classes. They learned Aztec history, myths, and rituals(宗教仪式), but they memorized(记住) everything because there weren't any textbooks. The boys received military training, and the girls learned how to manage the home and the family. There were two kinds of schools: one for children of rich families and another for children of ordinary families.
