The White family came to a new big city, but Mrs. White's son, Bob, was not happy. He didn't have anyone to play with. "Don't worry!" said his mother. "You will soon make friends here."

One morning, there was a knock at the door. Bob's mother, Mrs. White, opened it. There stood a woman with brown hair. It was Mrs. Miller. She came to borrow two eggs. She wanted to make cakes. Mrs. White gave her two. In the afternoon there was another knock at the door. Mrs. White opened it and she saw a boy standing there. "My name is Jack Miller," he said. "My mother sends you this cake and the two eggs." "Well, thank you, Jack," said Mrs. White. "Come in and meet my son Bob." Look! Bob and Jack were having cake and milk. They were playing football. Now they are friends! Jack said, "I'm glad you live next door." Bob said, "I must thank your mother for coming to borrow eggs."

Sea turtles(海龟) live in the sea most of the time. The beaches in Florida are home to sea turtles. Female sea turtles come here from the ocean to lay eggs. Then they return to the ocean. However, the number of some of these turtle species(种类) is falling. They are in danger, so people in Florida work together as a community to protect them.

Some volunteers take direct action to help the turtles. They look closely at the sand to find out where the sea turtles lay their eyes. Then they help bury(埋藏) the eggs in order to save them from being destroyed. They are helpful in people who are studying sea turtles.

Florida's government has passed laws to save the turtles. One of these laws is "Florida's Marine Turtle Protection Act". This law prevents anyone from destroying sea turtles' nests or eggs. It helps protect the turtles from dying out.

People also work together to save the turtles through organizations(组织) like the Sea Turtle Conservancy. For example, the bright light from buildings near the beach can influence sea turtles. It may make the baby turtles get lost, leading to many of them do not make it to the ocean and even die. The Sea Turtle Conservancy works with house owners to make the lighting in their buildings sea turtle friendly. They also advise people to turn off their lights at night if they live close to the beach.

In a word, everyone can do his or her part to protect sea turtles and their living places. People in Florida can work as volunteers to clean up the beaches and pick up their own litter. Everyone in the community has the ability to make a difference!

The top﹣selling album(唱片),Songs of the Humpback Whale,was made public in 1970. This collection of nature recordings changed the way many people thought about whales,and it helped save thousands of wha les.

The album might never have been made without a sound engineer named Frank Watlington. In the 1960s,Watlington was making underwater recordings when he noticed some strange,deep sounds. He realized they were coming from whales. Watlington played the recordings for a pair of scientists named Roger Payne and Katy Payne. When they listened,they fell in love with these beautiful voices at once.

Katy Payne studied music as well as animals,and she was greatly surprised by how the whales communicated using sounds like an opera singer. She also noticed another interesting fact:the sounds had clear patterns. According to scientists,an animal sound with a repeating pattern is called a song. Some scientists even compared these singing animals to musicians.

The Paynes thought that other people should also hear the beauty of the whales' songs. So Roger made the recordings into an album. The time when the album came out,whales were often caught,killed and traded for money. Some kinds were even in danger of dying out. Most people had never thought that whales could communicate through songs. But after hearing the album,they began to think differently.

The album led people to take action to save whales. Musicians began using whale songs in their music,and whales were included in movies and television shows. In 1982,a ban to stop deep﹣sea whaling was made. Before it,in the 1950s and 1960s,more than fifty thousand whales per year were killed. After it,the number went down below two thousand.

It might seem impossible that just one album could help save the lives of so many whales. But this album told people secrets about whales that had long been hidden under the sea. It allowed whales to finally share their songs with the human world.

 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项.

Have you ever unlocked a shared bike? Have you ever ordered a meal online? Have you ever enjoyed watching the short- form videos on the Internet? Well, if no one had invented the cell phone, none of these would have been possible.

Luckily, someone did invent the cell phone. That person is Martin Cooper, and he did that 51 years ago, in 1973.

Cooper used to work for Motorola. In the 1970s, the company was competing with AT&. T, a larger company, to make a cell phone system. Cooper didn't think Motorola's product was good enough. He didn't like AT&T's idea of a car phone, either. The man had a new idea. He wanted to make it possible for people to talk on their phones anywhere.

It took Cooper and his team 90 days to design the world's first cell phone. The product was called Dyna TAC. People could talk on it for 25minutes before its battery(电池)died. The phone's short battery life wasn't a big problem, Cooper once joked. Why? Well, the phone was too heavy(1,100 grams)to hold in hand for more than 25minutes!

On 3 April, 1973, Cooper made the world's first public cell phone call. He called Joel Engel, an AT&T manager. Cooper told Engel, "I'm calling you on a cell phone. It's a real, handheld cell phone." On the other end of the line, there was only silence.

Cell phones have changed a lot since that first call. They're much smaller and can do many more things. Cooper, now 96, is surprised at the progress.

But the man has also kept thinking about life in the future. "Keep learning all your life," he says, "or you'll lose the ability to learn-- that would be terrible!"
