We all know that paper-making, gunpowder, the compass and the art of {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (print) are the Four Great Inventions of ancient China. But have you heard of another important invention—the abacus (算盘)?

It's said that Li Shou (隶首) invented the abacus. It {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (be) around for over 5, 000 years. Some researchers believe the abacus has a {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (long) history than the other calculators (计算器) in the world. In China, people {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (use) abacuses to do calculations for thousands of years before people use electronic calculators in daily lives. 

The abacus is usually made of wood. It has many beads (珠子). Each bead above the abacus stands for five, and each bead below stands for one. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} moving the beads up or down, one can do all kinds of calculations. 

It is pleasant thing to watch a skilled hand use an abacus. Fingers move, beads knock, and after {#blank#}6{#/blank#} few seconds, the result comes out. In the past, the use of the abacus was a necessary skill. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} it was taught in many schools. 

Today, because we have been used to {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (use) electronic calculators, we don't have many chances to see an abacus in our daily lives. Many young people have not even {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (hear) of the word "abacus". However, the abacus still plays an important role in certain situations. 

The abacus is one of the important inventions in Chinese history. It used to make a big difference to Chinese people's life. It is one of the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (reason) why we are proud of China. It shows the great wisdom of the ancient Chinese people. It is our national treasure.

My Plan For The May Day

With the May Day holiday coming, I will make plans for it.

I think the May Day holiday is a fantastic time to do something meaningful. And we need to make good plans at first.

In the bright moonlight, Jack is walking home. Suddenly, he finds a hawk (鹰) lying beside a box. Very curious, he begins to check it.

The hawk seems to be in pain. One of its wings looks broken, touching the ground. Its eyes look scared. So Jack takes off his T-shirt and wraps (包裹) it carefully round the hawk. Then he carries it home.

"I can't take him into the house," he thinks. "My mum doesn't like animals in the house!"

Thinking for a while, Jack decides to hide the hawk in the garden shed (棚子). He secretly puts the hawk down on the floor with his T-shirt. Looking at the hawk, he says, "It's your home now. Call you Falco, OK?"

After that, he goes back to his room. Unluckily, his parents are waiting for him. Finding his T-shirt missing, they get quite angry and don't allow him to go out within a week. Jack goes to his room without any words, but he can't fall asleep because he is worrying about Falco.

In the early morning, Jack takes some bread to feed Falco and goes back to his room secretly. After breakfast, Jack goes to the garden shed, holding a small bowl of water.

In the shed, he finds Falco sitting quietly in a corner, the bread still on the floor. Falco's eyes are open, but not bright now. Jack puts the water in front of Falco. At first, Falco ignores (忽视) it, then he begins to drink. Jack sits quietly, looking at him, imagining Falco flying in the endless blue sky. But now he is trapped on the earth. "How can I help you return to the sky, Falco?"

When Jack leaves the shed, his brother Jim is waiting for him outside.

"What's so interesting in the shed?"

"Nothing."

"Tell me the truth, Jack. I think you haven't forgotten my broken rocket!"

Finally, Jack has no choice but to tell his brother the truth. Jim becomes very excited.

"Jim, please don't say anything to Mum and Dad. I can repair your rocket."

"My rocket isn't important, Jack. But Falco is!"

Then the brothers discuss how to feed Falco. They decide to get help from their friend Holly because she knows a lot about animals, birds and nature. Later, the brothers go to Holly. Holly advises them to feed some meat to Falco.

Over the next few days, Falco gets much better. He always eats the meat Jack and Jim bring him from the kitchen. Jack even digs up worms in the park for Falco. Falco loves them! His feathers look bright and shiny, too. But he still can't fly.

One morning, Holly comes to see Falco. After watching it for a while, Holly says, "Falco is well enough to fly again!" Hearing this, they happily open the door, and watch Falco step into the sunlight slowly. Falco beats his wings and tries to fly in small circles, then in large ones. Suddenly, he makes a loud cry and flies away. Jack feels a bit sad, but he knows they are right.

One evening, Jack and Jim are sitting in their room. It is a cool and quiet evening. Suddenly, he hears a cry from far away. A familiar (熟悉的) cry. A bird is flying in circles across the sky. It's Falco! Jack watches it fly, happy and wild.

①We spend most of our time with friends whom we like. Well, who would stay with a person one doesn't like? What kind of people are welcomed by others, then?

②There are people that naturally attract(吸引) you. By being with them just once, you start to like them. If you wonder why they attract people and want to be a person like them, you should learn how to develop the personalities that they have. 

③Firstly, everybody wants to be happy, and nobody wants to spend their time with a sad person. Well, you see, there is what you call mood linkage. If you are with a jolly person, you are more probably to be happy. When people choose to spend time with a person, they are more likely to choose those who are cheerful. So if you are a happy person, many people will want to spend their time with you. 

④Next, everybody needs someone to give encouragement to them, because sometimes in our lives we experience failure, sadness, problems and other bad things. So if you always choose to cheer others up with encouraging words or actions, they will be willing to spend time with you. 

⑤Lastly, you are not a friend if you don't lend a hand to your friends when they need help. You should always be helpful to them, no matter what it costs, because when you need help, they will be there for you too. 

⑥It feels good if people want to be your friends because of your character. So if you want to attract friends, I suggest you learn to develop these personalities.

Understanding the value of money may be the most important. Money doesn't grow on trees. Going to your parents' workplaces, you can know money can be made only through hard work. This may help you think twice before you buy something.

____▲____ School things and healthy food are needs. But too many snacks or expensive shoes may just be wants. For example, when you see a new phone that looks cool but you already have a good one, you should stop your desire(渴望) to get it.

 To spend your pocket money more wisely, you had better get a clear goal and watch your money grow. If you wish to own a new bicycle, you can save your pocket money. How? Write down how much money you have in a notebook and watch it grow. After you have enough, you can buy that bicycle you' ve dreamed about! Reaching our goals will greatly make us pleased.

 Sometimes you can learn from your mistakes. If you overspend on something, you should find out the reason and learn from it. Maybe you bought too many cards in one go and later found you didn't really need so many.

 You can also get advice from parents and teachers on how to manage your money better. They have more experience about that.

 So start from now, learn to be a wise spender. This will not only help us manage our money better but also set us on the path to be more responsible(有责任的) in the future.
