When Ava McCarver was in kindergarten, her class visited a nursing home (疗养院). Ava learned that many of the residents (住户) there receive few visitors. “I asked my mom if I could visit them,” she says. Soon, Ava and her mom became volunteers at Birchwood Health Care Center.
That was six years ago. She enjoys hanging out with Mary, Shirley and other residents during her twice-monthly visits. “I paint their nails, and I talk to a lot of them,” she says. Sometimes she helps lead craft (手工艺) projects. Other times they play card games. “It's good for the residents to see little kids,” Ava says. “That makes them really happy.”
She has raised money for the nursing home by making refrigerator decorations and selling them at a craft fair. She has also collected used puzzles from garage sales and donated them to Birchwood.
Ava wrote a book called The Squirrel Family. In the book, two squirrels raise a family and eventually move into a place called Birchwood where they live happily. Ten stores in her city agreed to display the books, along with a can to collect money. Ava's project raised about $750. Birchwood used that money to buy furniture for the residents.
Ava says she enjoyed the look of “pure joy” on a resident's face after a hug from her. That's why she started visiting Birchwood — to bring happiness to others. “It's really fun,” she says. “They have good stories, and I enjoy my time there.”

UrbanizationUntil relatively recently, the vast majority of human being lived and died without ever seeing a city. The first city was probably founded no more than 5,500 years ago.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}In fact, nearly everyone lived on farms or in tiny rural (乡村的) villages. It was not until the 20th century that Great Britain became the first urban society in history—a society in which the majority of people live in cities and do not farm for a living.Britain was only the beginning.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}.The process of urbanization—the migration (迁徙) of people from the countryside to the city—was the result of modernization, which has rapidly transformed how people live and where they live.In 1900, fewer than 40% of Americans lived in urban areas. Today, over 82% of Americans live in cities. Only about 2% live on farms.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Large cities were impossible until agriculture became industrialized. Even in advanced agricultural societies, it took about ninetyfive people on farms to feed five people in cities.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}Until modern times, those living in cities were mainly the ruling elite (精英) and the servants, laborers and professionals who served them. Cities survived by taxing farmers and were limited in size by the amount of surplus(过剩)food that the rural population produced and by the ability to move this surplus from farm to city.Over the past two centuries, the Industrial Revolution has broken this balance between the city and the country.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Today, instead of needing ninetyfive farmers to feed five city people, one American farmer is able to feed more than a hundred nonfarmers.
A. That kept cities very small. B. The rest live in small towns. C. The effects of urban living on people should be considered D. Soon many other industrial nations became urban societies. E. But even 200 years ago, only a few people could live in cities. F. Modernization drew people to the cities and made farmers more productive. G. Modern cities have destroyed social relations and the health of human beings. |

How to Get Rid of a Cold Naturally Fast
Although a cold usually goes away on its own within 4-7 days, you can ease your symptoms to feel better faster. You can get rid of a cold both naturally and fast by clearing your nasal passages with non-medical options. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. However, if you experience symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing or fever or your symptoms don't improve, see your doctor immediately.
①Clear Your Nasal Passages
Blow your nose correctly. While it's important to blow your nose while you have a cold, don't blow too explosively. The pressure from blowing hard can impact your ears, giving you an earache on top of your cold. Be sure to blow gently, and only as often as necessary. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}.
②Help Your Body Feel Better Faster
Drinking plenty of warm fluids makes you feel better faster and relieves cold symptoms such as a runny nose, cough, sneezing, and sore throat.
Consume vitamin C, which can help strengthen your immune system. Citrus fruits, red and green peppers, kiwifruit, spinach, and other raw fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamin C.
{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. Try to take plenty of naps during the day, since having a cold can make you feel run—down and you need to keep up your strength.
③{#blank#}4{#/blank#}
See your doctor immediately if you have shortness of breath or wheezing. Any time you're having trouble breathing, it's an emergency situation.
Visit your doctor for a fever above 101.3℉ (38.5℃) or lasting 5 days. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Babies under the age of 12 weeks need medical care for a fever of 100.4℉ (38.0℃) or greater.
If your symptoms don't seem to be going away in 7 days, then your infection could be worsening. It's best to see your doctor to make sure you're getting the proper treatment.
