    In 1858, two men wanted to be elected United States Senator from Illinois. One was Stephen Douglas. The other was Abraham Lincoln. Douglas was already the Senator, but his term in office was up. Lincoln had once been a U.S. Representative but was then a lawyer in Illinois.

    The men agreed to have seven public meetings, or debates, in seven different cities in Illinois. That way, voters all over the state would have a chance to hear what each man stood for.

    The first debate was in Ottawa on August 21, 1858. The main thing the men disagreed on was slavery. Douglas believed that as new states joined the union, they should decide for themselves whether or not they wanted to be a slave state or a free state. Lincoln believed that slavery should not spread beyond the states that already had slaves. He said the United States could not survive as half-slave and half-free states.

    The debates drew large crowds in all seven cities. People in the entire country were paying attention. Lincoln lost the Senate race. The debates did, however, make him well known everywhere.

    In 1860, it was time to elect a new President. Lincoln won the Republican party's nomination(提名). Douglas won the Democratic party's nomination. The two men again faced each other to get the people's votes. This time Lincoln won. He became the nation's 16th President.

    The slavery issue was still causing bad feelings between slave and non-slave states. By the time Lincoln took over as President on March 4, 1861, seven states had left the union. A month later, the Civil War began.

    At the age of seven, while his friends were spending their allowances on candy and toys, Jose Adolfo Quisocola, from Peru, came up with the creative idea of an eco-bank, which allows kids of all ages to become economically independent and financially wise while also helping the environment.

    Established in 2012, The Bartselana Student Bank is the world's first cooperative bank for kids. Whoever wants to join has to bring in at least 5 kilograms(11 pounds) of solid waste(paper or plastic) and establish a savings goal. Once accepted, all bank “partners” are required to deposit at least one additional kilogram(2.2 pounds) of recyclables on a monthly basis and obey other requirements, such as attending financial education and environmental management workshops. The waste accumulated is sold to local recycling companies, who, thanks to some clever negotiation by Jose, pay a higher-than-market rate for everything brought in by Bartselana Student Bank members. The funds received are placed in the individual's account where they collect until his／her savings goal is reached. The account holder can then withdraw his／her money, or choose to leave it and continue to grow for a bigger target.

    “At the beginning, my teachers thought I was crazy or that a child could not undertake this type of project, ” Jose recalls. “They did not understand that we are not the future of the country but its present. Luckily, I had the support of the school principal and an assistant in my classroom.”

    The youngster's persistence paid off. Today, the eco-bank, which now has the support of several local institutions, has ten educational centers and begins accepting applications from kids all across Peru. On November 20, 2018, the young boy was awarded the famous Children's Climate Prize (CCP). “Jose's eco-bank is a brilliant way of linking economy and climate impact, both in thought and practice. The potential impact is amazing,” a judge said.

    Hopefully, Jose's success will inspire more kids and adults to come up with new ideas that create value while helping the environment. As the boy says,” Together we can change the world…we just need an opportunity…”

    Bargain hunters spent a record of 168.2 billion yuan ($25.3 billion; 21.7 billion euros; ￡19.3 billion) during the 2017 Singles Day on Nov. 11, the world's largest daylong discount festival, as e-commerce giant Alibaba Group took online shopping to offline stores and beyond(超越) the nation's borders(边界).

    Spending climbed by 39.3 percent during this year's sale, as consumers from 225 countries and regions scooped up goods from 140,000 brands (品牌)that offered promotions during the annual event.

    Alibaba surpassed last year's 120.7 billion yuan total shortly after 1 pm, as overseas shoppers joined in the afternoon, seeking good deals from China. Expanding at a faster-than-expected pace, the total eclipsed (使黯然失色) the combined sales of Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the United States last year. Nine out of ten people used mobile wallet apps for payment, says Alibaba, with its Alipay app having handled 1.48 billion transactions (转账) in 24 hours and processed them at a peak rate of 256,000 transactions per second.

    Meanwhile, some offline shops also joined in, turning into smart stores that allowed shoppers to track product availability at other locations and get timely delivery to their doorsteps while paying with their phone. "Using big data analytics powered by Chinese tech firms can help us locate customers in a precise manner, something we wouldn't have achieved using old-school retailing," says Gary Chu, e-commerce general manager.

    The Nov. 11 shopping event represents a China-branded business model that can also be spread to other countries, creating opportunities for businesses worldwide. As Singles Day grows, shoppers have used the opportunity to try out new items rather than simply bagging a bargain, says Tommy Hong, vice-president of Nielsen China.

    "That changing attitudes (toward Singles Day) is also consistent with China's shifting focus from quantity(数量) to quality growth," Gary Chu says.

    It was already dark when an old man came to a small town. He found an inn and wanted to stay there for the night. After he had gone to his room, the owner said to his wife, "Look at his bag, dear. I'm sure there are lots of valuable things in it. I want to steal it when he is asleep."

    "No, no," said the woman. "He must look for his bag tomorrow morning. Then he'll take you before the judge." They thought and at last the woman had an idea. "We have forgetful grass," said the woman, "Why not put some into his food? If he has the food, he will forget to take his bag away." "How clever you are!" said the owner, "Don't forget it when you prepare supper for him."

    The old man had the food with the forgetful grass and went to bed. The next morning, when the owner got up, he found the door was open and the old man had left with his bag. He woke his wife up and said angrily, "What a fool! Your forgetful grass isn't useful at all."

    "No, no," said the woman. "I don't think so. He must forget something."

    "Oh, I've remembered!" The owner cried out suddenly, "He forgot…"
