Cody and his sister April decide to buy a dog. They go to the local pet store and have a look around. It is a very small pet store that doesn't have many animals.

The owner of the store is a nice old man-Mr. Smith. He walks over and greets Cody and April.

"How can I help you?" he asks.

"We would like to buy a dog," April responds(回答).

"Ah, well, our shop is not a big pet shop," Mr. Smith tells her. "So we only have two dogs to choose from."

They ask Mr. Smith to show them the dogs.

Mr. Smith leads them to the back of the store where the two dogs are. One of them is a very big bulldog(斗牛犬) named Buster. The other is a very tiny chihuahua(吉娃娃) named Teacup.

April wants Teacup. Cody wants Buster. They walk outside to discuss.

They can't agree on a dog. April suggests they race home for it. The winner of the race chooses the dog.

Cody agrees, then tells April her shoelace(鞋带) is untied. When April looks down, he runs off and gets a head start.

Cody runs as hard as he can. He really wants that bulldog. He looks back. April is so far behind, and he can't even see her.

Cody finally gets home. He is tired but he is happy. He knows he is the winner.

April arrives a few minutes after Cody. She congratulates him. They return to the pet store to purchase Buster, the bulldog.

However, when they arrive they only see Teacup.

They ask Mr. Smith where Buster is.

Mr. Smith gives the details. He explains that a few minutes after April and Cody leave, two boys walk in and buy the bulldog.

Cody looks at April, and she holds back a smile. He turns back to Mr. Smith.

"Sometimes you win the race, but not the prize!" Cody looks sad. "We'll take the chihuahua, please."

Chris Jones recently completed a very unusual journey. Our reporter Mary Owen met him at his home in the south of London and be told her all about the trip.
Reporter: What gave you the idea to make a trip around India on an elephant, Chris?
Chris: Well, it all started the idea two years ago when I was planning a trip to India. I visited a photo exhibition of elephants and I realized that the only enjoyable way to make a trip around India was on an elephant.
Reporter: What did you do next?
Chris: I flew to New Delhi and started looking for an elephant, I needed an elephant trained to carry people. I didn't know anything about elephants, so I asked an expert(专家) for help. He taught me how to ride an elephant. He also helped me find an elephant.
Reporter: How long did it take you to find a suitable elephant?
Chris: Not too long. I bought a famale elephant called Tara for about 6.000 dollars.
Reporter: Can you tell me about the journey?
Chris: Tara and I set off from New Delhi a week later. We were going to Sonepur in northern India. There is a big elephant market there and I could sell Tara easily. And what a ride! Elephants can travel at about 6 miles an hour and Sonepur is more than 1,200 km away. It took us 64 days to complete the journey.
Reporter: Did you have any problems on your journey?
Chris: Yes, a few. But nothing serious. On the third day. Tara hurt her foot. But that got better quickly. Also, there was a lot of heavy rain during the first week and we got very wet!
Reporter: What happened when you reached Sonepur?
Chris: My plan was to sell Tara. But I was very fond of her. I couldn't take her back to Britain and I didn't want to sell her at the market. I happened to meet some people who wanted an elephant for their national park in southern India. I knew that Tara would be safe with them, so I gave her to them. I was very sad to say goodbye.

The robin (知更鸟) stood on an old climbing plant, and sang his most beautiful song. Suddenly the wind made the plant move, and Mary saw something under the dark green leaves. The thick, heavy plant was covering a door. Mary's heart was beating fast and her hands were shaking as she pushed the leaves away and found the keyhole. She took the key out of her pocket, and it fit the hole. Using both hands, she managed to unlock the door. Then she turned round to see if anyone was watching. But there was no one, so she pushed the door, which opened, slowly, for the first time in ten years. She walked quickly in and closed the door behind her. At last she was inside the secret garden!

It was the loveliest, most exciting place she had ever seen. There were old rose trees everywhere, and the walls were covered with climbing roses. She looked carefully at the grey branches (枝条). Were the roses still alive? Ben would know. She hoped they weren't all dead. But she was inside the wonderful garden, in a world of her own. It seemed very strange and silent, but she did not feel lonely at all. Then she noticed some small green shoots coming up through the grass. So something was growing in the garden after all! When she found a lot more shoots in different places, she decided they needed more air and light, so she began to pull out the thick grass around them. She worked away, clearing the ground, for two or three hours, and had to take her coat off because she got so hot. The robin hopped around, pleased to see someone gardening.
