    Back to its origin

    The University of Sheffield is a research university in the city of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It is one of the original “red brick” universities, which are a group of top and famous old universities. The University of Sheffield was originally formed by the combination of three colleges. The Sheffield School of Medicine was founded in 1828, followed in 1879 by the opening of Firth College by Mark Firth, a steel manufacturer (制造商), to teach arts and science subjects. Firth College then helped to provide money for the opening of the Sheffield Technical School in 1884 to teach applied science. In 1897 the three institutions were joined together to form the University College of Sheffield, which in turn became the University of Sheffield by Royal Charter (特许) in 1905. This university is famous for its good education and boasts a number of Nobel Prize winners among its former students.

If you live in a big city, there are many things to drive youcrazy on your daily route, and it's not just overcrowded subway trains.

Vicky Zhao is a mainlander working in Hong Kong. For her, onething she can't put up with is people standing on the wrong side of theescalator(自动扶梯)in subwaystations. “Escalators help us move faster and save time. It isn't a place torest,” the 24-year-old says. “I often see tourists block the way with theirsuitcases or chatting on the escalators during rush hours. It annoys meto no end.”

Admitting she is not the patient type, Zhao says things are muchbetter in Hong Kong than in cities on the mainland where “stand right, walkleft” signs are often ignored.

The logic behind the “stand right, walk left” escalatoretiquette(礼仪)seems obvious.Even though you may want to catch your breath while you're transported up ordown, you should still consider others and leave enough space for people in ahurry, so that they can run and catch the train.

Many cities' escalators, including London's and Beijing's, usethe “stand right, walk left” system to speed up the flow of people.(Australia isan exception and you should stand on the left side instead.)But somecities discourage people from moving on escalators out of safety reasons. InHong Kong's subway stations there are regular announcements asking people to“stand still” on escalators. Even so, most people in this fast-paced cityobserve the “stand right, walk left” etiquette.

But the people who stand on escalators defend themselves bytelling the walkers not to be so impatient. The BBC quotes one stander assaying:“If the person is in such a rush, why not just take the stairs?Even when the escalator is packed and there's nowhere to move, I see these samepeople complaining about not being able to pass.

Whatever the escalator etiquette is in the place you live orvisit, do what most people are doing and always be mindful of others: leaveenough space between each other, don't stay at the end of the escalator, and ifsomeone is blocking your way, a simple “excuse me” is enough.

    Sometimes the toughest thing about feelings is sharing them with others.Sharing your feelings helps you whether your feelings are wonderful or terrible.Sharing also helps you to get closer to people you care about and who care about you.But how?

    You can't tell your friends what's inside your backpack if you don't know what's in there yourself.Feelings are the same way.Before you can share them with anyone,you have to figure out what feelings you have.

    Making a list of your feelings can help.You can do this in your mind or by writing it out or even by drawing pictures.Is something bothering you? Does it make you frustrated or terrified? Do you feel this emotion only once in a while or much of the time?

    The way a person feels inside is important.If you keep feelings locked inside,it can even make you feel sick! But if you talk with someone who cares for you,you will almost always start to feel better.It doesn't mean your problems and worries magically disappear,but at least someone else knows what's bothering you and can help you find solutions.

    Your mom and dad want to know if you have problems and what's happening in your life.But what if a kid doesn't want to talk with parents? Then find another trusted adult,like a relative or a teacher at school.Maybe this person can help you talk with your parents about your problem or concern.

    Once you know who you can talk with,you'll want to pick a time and place to talk.You can talk publicly in your family.But some kids are more private than others and they will feel shy about sharing their feelings.Then find a quiet place or write it down on a piece of paper.A kid doesn't have to share every feeling he or she has.

    Many people don't consider their breakfast without a glass of milk. Right now, cows, buffalos, goats and sheep provide most of the world's milk. But soon, people could get milk from roaches(蟑螂).

    That isn't as crazy as it might sound. New research shows this “milk” is super-nutritious. What's more, some scientists have already begun referring to a lot of insects as source of milk.

    In 2004, Subramanian Ramaswamy started studying milk crystals found inside the roach. At the time, he was teaching biochemistry at the University of Iowa City.

    To learn more about the milk crystal from roaches, the scientists used X-rays to look at the atoms in it. The data basically revealed the chemical recipe of the roach crystal. They showed that roach milk is a “complete food”. It contains sugar with a fatty acid stuck to it. Fatty acids are the building blocks of fats. The protein in the milk is also full of essential amino(氨基的) acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. Since our bodies can't produce the “essential” ones, we need to get them from our food. And so do baby roaches.

    Barbara Stay, a biologist at Iowa University, also worked on the new study. She says the new data show that the roach milk is “three times more nutritious than cow's milk and four times more nutritious than buffalo's milk”.

    Ramaswamy would like to see roach milk turned into a protein supplement to feed hungry people. But not everyone is confident that it can be done.

    Marcel Dicke studies insects as a potential source of human food at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. Dicke says this is a “sound study”. However, in his opinion, “Extracting(提取) milk from roaches can only likely be done in a destructive way with only small quantities”. That means you'd have to raise and kill many bugs to get even tiny quantities of the milk.

    As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn't grow up with them. They don't have simple models of how they should work, what to do when something doesn't work or where to go for help. We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.

    I think there is huge potential (潜力) and we are designing it. The ability to connect to friends, who remember the same movies and news and music, is really important, especially as people get old. They end up in retirement homes and they aren't always close to their friends. Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing.

    My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail. She was born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was 3. She was totally deaf for many years, until age 53, when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her. But before then, her friends couldn't call her on the phone, so they insisted she use e-mail to communicate with them.

    Young people don't even think of the Internet as technology. It's just there, and they use it. There's been a very interesting change in communications styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren't willing to make phone calls. And they think of e-mail as old-fashioned and slow.

    The reason why teens don't make phone calls seems to be that they don't know what to say. When they call they often stop for a while and there's this silence. On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it's okay if you don't answer. You might have been distracted. It's not considered rude. But it is considered strange if you're in this kind of voice conversation and simply stop talking.

    Positive thinking is a significant element of happiness. In order to become a positive thinker, determination and consistency are important. The first thing to know about positive thinking is that everyone can do it.  With certain cognitive (认知的) and behavioral changes, we can all become positive thinkers. Another important factor is that being a positive thinker does not mean you become numb to anything that is not working properly in your life or is negative - it just means that you approach life and face challenges with a healthier outlook.

    Instead of selectively attending to negative events, focus on the positive ones. Then pay attention to the delayed consequences of your behavior rather than the immediate ones. For example, if a job is not going like you want, focus on the fact that you have a job and how you can take your time to make the situation better.

    Challenge any internal attributions and see if you compare your behavior to standards that are excessively rigid and perfectionistic. If so, change these and be reasonable with your comparisons. For example, if you constantly compare your weaknesses with other people's strengths, then switch this and compare yourself with those who are doing poorer than you as well. Overall, people who focus more on their strengths than their weaknesses but at the same time are aware of their weaknesses have a healthier self-evaluation result.

    When faced with too much fear about a situation, imagine the worst case and visualize a solution for it, then let go of fear. This way, you will be prepared for anything and your fear will not block you from being open and creative to different solutions. For example, if you are constantly worried about losing your job up to a point where it is creating a lot of anxiety and fear and is effecting your performance and your happiness negatively, then think of losing your job, visualize how you will handle it, find solutions in your mind and then let go of the thought and the fear attached to it.

    So positive thinkers are better problem solvers and have better interactions. In addition to that, people who are positive thinkers are happier and more satisfied with their life.
