    How old is "old"?  Two hundred years ago, you were old at 35. That was the average life then. At the turn of this century, as medical knowledge advanced, the average life span(长度) increased to 45. In 1950, 70-year-olds were really old. Today, a healthy 70-year-old is looking forward to many more active years.

    So, how old is old? The answer is one you've heard many times, from all sorts of people. "You are as old (or young) as you feel!" The calendar(日历) simply tells you how many years you have lived.

    Once an unknown author wrote,"  Nobody grows old by living a number of years; people grow old by giving up their goals."

     Alice Brophy, when she was with the New York City commission for the Aging, said, "It upsets me when people say, 'Gee, you look young for your age!' What does that mean? Is there some model that you're supposed to look a certain way at 65 and 75 and 85? You know you can die old at 30 and live young at 80"

    There are many wrong ideas about aging.  Here are some of the more common ones. For example, most older people are in poor health, or older people are unable to change.

A. It's extremely terrible to be grown old.

B. Youth is not a time of life but it is a state of mind.

C. These ideas stereotype(固化) people on the basis of age.

D. Old is a point of view.

E. Older people are stubborn, unable to change.

F. The answer has changed over the years.

G. Your body tells you how well you've lived.

    Doctors say anger can be an extremely damaging emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it. They warn that anger can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Some people express anger openly in a calm reasonable way. Others burst with anger, and scream and yell. But other people keep their anger inside. They can not or will not express it. This is called repressing anger.

    For years many doctors thought that repressing anger was more dangerous to a person's health than expressing it. They said that when a person is angry, the brain releases the same hormones (荷尔蒙). They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, or sugar into the blood, etc.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Some doctors say that both repressing and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger violently may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”

    Doctors say that a good way to deal with anger is to find humor in the situation that has made you angry. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. In general the person feels excited and ready to act.

B. They said that laughter is much healthier than anger.

C. Expressing anger violently is more harmful than repressing it.

D. Anger may cause you a cancer.

E. Do not express your anger while angry.

F. Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time.

G. Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger.

    Depression can be harmful to those affected by the disease, but the pain it causes doesn't end there.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} They can see the damage the disease is causing, but may feel helpless orconfused about what to do to assist. Yet there are many ways that friends and family can help.

    Know the symptoms

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} That means learning the symptoms of depression. Also, it means realizing that the individual may not recognize the signs himself or herself. Depression may appear as persistent unhappiness, anger, tiredness or other feelings and emotions that the individual may owe to something other than depression.

    Be sympathetic

    The most important thing is to be sympathetic.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Listen with patience and acceptance. Let the person talk about how they're feeling no matter how sad or negative their comments are. Do not argue about their points or try to convince them to see things in a more positive light, because someone wrestling with depression does not have the ability to do so.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Talk to your physician and share what's going on and ask what they suggest. It won't be the first time they have heard this, and they have resources that will be helpful. For the friend or loved one, the best thing to offer is your understanding and a sense of hope. Let them know that, they will start to feel better and see things differently once they seek help and undergo treatment.

    Support them through treatment

    It can be helpful to point out that depression is not a personal problem or weakness of character but it's a medical condition that responds to treatment, just like most other medical problems. And help your loved one stick with treatment. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Seek your own support.

B. Ask doctors about your symptoms.

C. Friends and loved ones are affected, too.

D. The first step is to recognize that he or she may be depressed.

E. Those with depression are at increased risk of harming themselves.

F. It may take several weeks before the patient sees signs of improvement.

G. Do not suggest in any way a sense of surprise that this person is depressed.

    If you think your vocabulary is weak, a little effort every day over six to nine months can go a long way in improving it. Here are some tips for increasing your vocabulary.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#} You may be comfortable reading a particular part but make an effort to read different articles on every page. The editorial (社论的) page is highly recommended not only for vocabulary but also for structuring and presenting thoughts. And there are different articles in the newspaper every day.

    Make it a habit to read a new book every week. It is not surprising that those who read a lot of books develop good vocabulary. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Make a list of words that are new to you and look up their meanings in the dictionary.

    Watching English movies and television shows. It is important for improving English and learning new English words. It's an interesting way to add the number of your vocabulary. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Use vocabulary cards. Vocabulary cards are used by students who are trying to learn many words in a short time. You can make your own cards by writing the word on one side and the meaning on the other side of a piece of paper. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Use the Internet. The Internet is an unlimited (无限制的) resource for reading material. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} You will come across plenty of material to read, which you might find interesting, and important. The Internet will also introduce you to new words. Be sure to look them up in a dictionary.

A. You can consider becoming a member of the local library.

B. Flash cards are a convenient tool to use to learn new words in your free time.

C. You cannot learn English well without enough vocabulary.

D. Pick up a topic of your choice and search for articles about it.

E. You should develop your own way of learning vocabulary.

F. Besides, by doing this you can learn the correct pronunciation as well.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. Then try and surf along the surface of the wave

B. I can experience this same fun when bodysurfing

C. but it does have its own unofficial world championship

D. that can be practised by using nothing but the human body

E. which is looked down on by professional athletes, however

F. Famous bodyboarders in the great surfing history have also competed

G. A wetsuit is also advisable to use unless you are bodysurfing in tropical (热带的) seas

    I have been lucky enough to be right next to dolphins playing in perfect surf, using the power of the waves to travel even faster than they normally swim. There is np doubt that they are enjoying themselves and, though I can't swim like a dolphin, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

    Bodysurfing involves riding on a wave with no help from any device (装置) such as a surfboard, which makes it the "purest" form of surfing. In fact, it is one of very few extreme sports—free climbing and cliff diving are others—{#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

    However, it is more enjoyable and safer if you use flippers (脚蹼). This is because they enable you to swim faster, and so catch waves and surf along them more easily. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. Another aid is a handboard, a mini-surf board about the size of an iron, held in one hand to generate more speed along the wave.

    To catch a wave, swim to where the waves break and, as one approaches, start swimming towards the beach. You must try to travel at the same speed as the wave and, if you do it correctly, you will feel the wave lifting you and pushing you forwards. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.

    Bodysurfing is not a professional sport, {#blank#}5{#/blank#}—the Pipeline Bodysurfing

    Classic—held each year at the legendary Banzai Pipeline in Hawaii. Local bodysurfers compete against athletes from places such as Australia, Brazil, Japan or France, in terrifying walls of water above the sharp coral reef.

    For me no other sport is as much fun as bodysurfing. There's a good reason why dolphins choose not to use surfboards!

    It's very common these days for people to take some sort of regular exercise each week. But if you've never done it before, what's the best way to go about it? {#blank#}1{#/blank#} He or she will create a personalized plan for you based on your aims.

    However, each hourly session can be steep considering you have to pay both the personal trainer and membership of the gym, too. So what's left? Well, if you have the courage to do it, you can make your own plan. It's relatively easy to do if you have the know-how. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    First, keep your fitness goal in mind. Are you looking to slim down or increase your abilities? Whatever it is, make sure the things you choose to do are achieving that goal. Next, do your research. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Watch as many of these as possible, but make sure to be a little critical of them — everyone has a different physique and what works for one may not work for another. Finally, keep your feet on the ground. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} It takes at least three months to see any realistic body changes. And don't be overzealous(过度热衷的) — never work in pain — a good workout is difficult and challenging, but never painful. Pain means you are damaging yourself.

    If nothing else, focus on calisthenics (健身操). {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Do as many of one exercise as you can without stopping, and then try and repeat that number twice more — make sure you sweat, and don't forget to rest for a minute in between each activity!
