The young artist and potter Allan had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a severe stomachache. Neither Allan nor his wife took the condition very {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (serious), but the boy died suddenly that night.

    Knowing the death could {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (avoid) if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt he was guilty. I hadn't heard him talk much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what {#blank#}8{#/blank#} earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, “As a child until I left home at 18, Allan came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘love you, son'.”

    Tears came to my eyes as I realized what I had been a fool to judge Allan {#blank#}9{#/blank#} a failure. He had not left any material{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (possess) behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and left behind his best love.

    A graduation speech given by Chief Justice John Roberts became a talking point after The Washington Post published it.

    Roberts {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(address)his son's ninth grade graduating class. He advised the young graduates{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(take)life's setbacks in their stride(从容地). But he did not wish{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(they)good luck.

    Way back in 1674, a frog helped Antoni van Leeuwenhoek make an incredible discovery. Antoni was an amateur scientist from Holland, so fascinated by microscopes {#blank#}1{#/blank#} he'd built some of his own. One rainy day, as he went for a walk, a leaping frog {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(draw) his attention to a puddle.

    Antoni collected a drop of puddle water and put it{#blank#}3{#/blank#} his microscope. He was amazed{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (see) a whole community of creatures swimming in this one drop — tiny beings no one had ever seen before.

    These tiny beings, called microbes, are everywhere: in dirt, in food and on your kitchen table. Some microbes can make you sick.     Imagine what it's like to be the silver medalist. If you {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (be) just one second faster, you could have won the gold! So close! You would keep comparing yourself to be the gold winner, full {#blank#}3{#/blank#} envy.

    Now imagine what it's like to be the bronze medalist. One second {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (slow), and you wouldn't have won anything! Whoo-hoo! You would be thrilled that you were {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (official) an Olympic medalist, and got to stand on the winner's podium at all.

    You can {#blank#}6{#/blank#} compare up or compare down and your{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (happy) depends on where you're focusing. This is easy to understand, but hard to remember in everyday life. If you catch yourself {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (bum) with envy of anger, think like the bronze medalist, not the silver. Change your focus.

    For example, if you buy something that is “the best”, you may feel like a gold winner, but when the new “best” {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (come) out next year, you'll feel like the siver. Instead, if you look at what you buy as something “surprisingly good”, it will keep you in the bronze mindset. Since you're not comparing it to best, you'll feel no need {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (keep) up with the newest thing.
