Last year, two days before Christmas, my friends called, telling me their kitchen caught fire, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (destroy) everything in it. I drove to their house, taking all the food I had. They were so happy to see me, but felt {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (embarrass) having nothing to give me in return.

    I went home, very upset. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (actual), I was also in a hard place financially and unable to do {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (much) for them. I called a friend of {#blank#}5{#/blank#} ( I ) about this, who responded, “These people mean a lot to you and I want to help them.” Since he had never met them, he requested me {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (go) to the grocery store, all on him. At the check-out, I noticed him lacking money, so that I had to have some items taken back.

    We were walking away {#blank#}7{#/blank#} I heard a voice behind me asking the clerk, “How much are those things? I decide to pay for them.” I turned around {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (thank) the kind man and told him everything. He explained that he understood that as he had lost his job the year before but now was working again. {#blank#}9{#/blank#} tears in our eyes, all of us went away. It was such {#blank#}10{#/blank#} wonderful feeling to see folks step up when someone needed help, even a total stranger.

    My feelings about science have {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (complete) changed. The science teachers {#blank#}2{#/blank#} my new school are excellent and {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (friend). The science{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (facility) are very good with laboratories that have all the {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (late) equipment. Our chemistry teacher takes us to public science lectures about four times {#blank#}6{#/blank#} term, which are always interesting, because the lecturers are famous at {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (them) area of science. In the last 20 years, seven Canadian scientists {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (win) the Nobel Prize. Now {#blank#}9{#/blank#} I'm becoming more and more interested in is physics and I want to study it at university. But my parents are {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (astonish), as they always thought I would become an English teacher.

Gift from A Stranger

My local supermarket is always busy. The first parking space I found was convenient. but I'd noticed a woman in a blue car circling for a while. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}I was in a good mood, I let her have it. On the edge of the car park I backed into the next available spot——it was a tight fit. Pretty soon I'd made my way through the supermarket and was back in the flesh air. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(feel)good, I emptied my purse change into the hands of a homeless man and{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(help)a struggling woman reverse park.

    Just as I approached my car, I saw the woman I'd let have my car spot earlier. She was giving me {#blank#}4{#/blank#}odd look——half intent(热切的), half puzzled. I smiled and wished her a pleasant day. As I squeezed back into my car, I saw the same lady{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(look)in at me. "Hello, "she said, hesitantly. "This {#blank#}6{#/blank#}sound crazy but I was on my way to drop some of my mother's things off at the charity bins. You are just so much {#blank#}7{#/blank#}her. You helped those people, I noticed, and you seemed so happy. "She looked at me{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(meaning)and passed a box in through the window. "I think she would like you to have it. "{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(shock), I took it from her automatically. She smiled and walked away.

    After a pause. I opened the box. Inside was a beautiful gold necklace with a large grey pearl. It was the {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(nice)gift I'd ever received, and it was from a complete stranger. The necklace was around my neck, a warm reminder of human kindness.

    Recently I failed an exam. However, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}I came out of my teacher's office, I told myself, "Smile! It's not so serious."

    I smiled a big smile and it {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (work) a little, really.

    Everyone gets {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (frustrate) sometimes. I used to be always influenced by pressure and I was often in low spirits. But one day I came {#blank#}4{#/blank#}a sentence in the Bible, "Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself, let the day's own trouble be sufficient for the day." It suddenly struck me，"{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(worry) about a problem doesn't help. Why not just {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(give) a big smile and face up to the trouble？"

    Now every time I want to cry, I remind myself that{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (laugh) is better than tears and anger. I {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(convince) that there's something magical about a smile. A smile helps me recover confidence and gives me the courage to move on.

    Remember, whenever you're faced with a setback, whenever you've been treated {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（fair), all it takes is determination and you can feel happy again. Smile at life, {#blank#}10{#/blank#}it will shine on you.
