浙江省宁波市北仑中学2018-2019学年高二上学期英语期初返校考试试卷

阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。

Silence is unnatural to man. He does all he can (make) a noise in the world, and he fears silence more than anything else. Even his conversation is an attempt to prevent a fearful silence. If he(introduce) to another person, and a number of pauses occur in the conversation, he regards himself asfailure, and is full of envy of the emptiest-headed chatterbox (喋喋不休的人).He knows that ninety-nine percent of human conversation (mean) no more than the buzzing of a fly, but he is anxious to join in the buzz and to prove that he is a man and not a waxwork figure (蜡塑人像).

The aim of conversation is to keep up the buzzing sound. There are, it must be admitted, different qualities of buzz; there is even a buzz that is as(annoy) as the continuous noise made by a mosquito (蚊子). But at a dinner party one would rather be a mosquito a quiet person. Most buzzing, fortunately, is pleasant to the ear, and some of it is pleasant even to the mind.

Those hate to pick up the weather as a(conversation) opening seem to me not to know the reason why human beings wish to talk. Very few human beings join in a conversation in the hope of(learn) anything new. Some of them are content if they are (mere) allowed to go on making a noise into other people's ears.

Many years ago, everyone {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(eat) all kinds of food, especially fruit, vegetables and fish. At the same they took {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(day) exercise. They were very healthy. All of that made a dark witch{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(anger). So she invented a potion which could let people like to eat unhealthy food.

One day, a little boy found the bottle with the potion.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(think) that it was some kind of drink, he drank it. A few days later, a strange feeling in his body let the boy lose his appetite{#blank#}5{#/blank#}vegetables, fruit and fish. All he wanted to do was to eat ice cream, pizza, burgers and candy. And because of another strange feeling all over his body, the boy didn't enjoy exercising,  {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. The boy gave up eatinghealthy food and{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (do) exercise at once. Soon his life got more and more boring. He started feeling ill. {#blank#}8{#/blank#}was important to him except sleeping at home. The boy had a disease, the disease of wasting his life. And the worst thing of all was that the disease was infectious. Luckily, Doctor Healthy discovered if a person lived a healthy and happy life, the potion would be{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(use) in a short time. So{#blank#}10{#/blank#}could the waste-of-life disease be cured? The best remedy was not medicine, but just an effort to eat some fruit, vegetables and fish and to do some exercise.

The Moon's near side, the one we all see, has been the target of many robotic and human missions. However, its far side, also {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (call)the dark side because it faces away from the Earth and little {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (know)about it, has never been explored. That changed on Jan.2, 2019, when Chinese spacecraft Chang'e 4 made a soft landing on {#blank#}3{#/blank#} is often referred to as the dark side.

The landing is {#blank#}4{#/blank#} example of China's growing desire {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (compete)with the American, Russian and European space programs. China also wants to {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (strength)its position as a regional and international power.

One of the great {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (difficulty)in exploring the far side of the Moon is that it blocks all radio signals, {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (make)it impossible to communicate with the Earth. To overcome this difficulty, in 2017, the Chinese National Space Administration launched a satellite to orbit the Moon and relay the signals. Once a {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (rely)communication path was in place, Chang'e 4 could send back information.

Chang'e 4 will make astronomical observations and examine the structure and mineral composition of the ground above and below the surface, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} researchers believe will provide insights into the solar system's early days and perhaps even the origin of the first stars.
