“Cool” is a word with many meanings, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} As the world change, the word has many different meanings.
“Cool” can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything. When you see a famous car on the street, maybe you will say, “It's cool.” {#blank#}2{#/blank#} You can use “cool” instead of many words. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall(瀑布) they had visited.On one student's paper was just one sentence,“ It's so cool.”{#blank#}4{#/blank#} But the story also shows a scarcity(缺乏) of words. Without “cool”, some people have no words to show the same meaning. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} I can. And I think they are also very cool.

      What do you think is the most common illness? Do you get ill sometimes? We are lucky to live now because there are lots of medicines to make people better．

     The most common illness in the world is the cold．It often begins with a sore throat．Then you sneeze and your nose runs．You usually have a headache，too．Often you cough later．It's not a very bad illness but you can feel quite ill．   

     There isn't a cure(治愈)for a cold but you can take medicines to make you feel better．For instance aspirin(阿司匹林)can stop your headache．It is good to rest and to drink a lot of water，too．A doctor once said to me，“With the proper medicine a cold will last for seven，days．With no medicine it will go on for a whole week!”

     Where does our medicine come from? A long time ago people knew that some plants made them feel better．They ate the leaves，the roots，the I fruit or the seeds of those plants．For instance the juice of lemons makes a sore throat feel better．

     In modern times scientists have looked at these plants and found out which chemicals(化学物质)are in them．Many of our medicines today are made from those chemicals．   

     There are some illnesses which we can't cure yet．And nobody has found a cure for old age．But because of modern medicines most people now live longer than their grandparents．   

    In ancient Egypt, women did not go out to work. They stayed and worked at home. Many Egyptian men were farmers. Some men were builders or fishermen. Other men worked as artists. Some other important people did not do any farming.

    The weather in Egypt was very hot. Ancient Egyptians did not wear many clothes, Men, women and children often wore simple robes made of thin cloth. On their feet they wore light open shoes. People, including women, shaved(剃) hair from their heads to keep cool.

    Children in ancient Egypt grew up to do the same jobs as their parents. Girls stayed at home with their mothers. They learned to look after the home Boys worked with their fathers. They learned to do the jobs their fathers did. They learned to look after the home Boys worked with their fathers. They learned to do the jobs their fathers did. They only went to school to learn to write if they wanted to become a scribe (抄写员).

    Many of the games played by ancient Egyptians are similar to games we still play today, Children played racing and jumping games. They also played ball games and with wooden toys. Older children played a game like chess.

    The kings of Egypt (the pharaohs) had enough power to master their country. The people thought that the pharaoh was a god. He owned everything. Everyone had to do what he told them to do. The pharaohs built huge tombs. When a pharaoh died, he was buried in the tomb. The tombs were often in the shape of pyramids. When a pharaoh was buried, he was surrounded by treasure and by things to help him in the next world, such as food, clothes, furniture and weapons.

    I grew up in a small town in Ohio USA. There was a man, in my town named Bob. He couldn't talk clearly and didn't receive much education. So children in the town all thought he was silly and often played jokes on him.

    One day, when 1 met Bob, I decided to play a joke on him just like the other children. He asked how it was going. I told him that my father lost his job, and that, we didn't have enough money to live. Seeing my friends laughing far from us, I decided to continue to play the joke. I knew he was poor, so it seemed funny when he asked me if we needed anything. I told him that we didn't know-if we would have enough to eat.

    The next morning, I went out and found a box of food outside my house. I knew it was from Bob. I looked at the small box in shame(羞愧), and wanted to return the box. My father stopped me. He said it would hurt Bob's feeling.

    From that day on, when we had dinner, I would think of the small box. Bob gave me the best he had and I knew that I should not have been given that gift.

    Mary is a six-year-old girl. She often goes to the shop and goes to the church (教堂) with her mother. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    One day, when they are in the church, the pastor(牧师)asks, "Who wants to go to the heaven(天堂) ? Please put up your hands. "All the people but Mary put up their hands. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    "I want to go home with my mother," answers Mary."

    When they get home, it is dark. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} She is very busy. She washes some clothes.  She cleans the table and the chairs. Then she wants to sweep the floor. But the broom (扫帚) isn't in the room.

    "Could you help me, Mary? Would you like to go. out and bring the broom for me?"
