An Art Class

When Kelly was twelve, she started taking classes at Miss Grace's School for Art. She didn't like it at first: the "novice artists"-the kids who hadn't really done art before-worked mostly with clay, and Kelly was a terrible sculptor. 

It wasn't until her third year that Kelly found something she was really good at-charcoal drawing （素描）. She loved watching the lines spread unevenly across the page as she moved the bits of charcoal back and forth over the paper. 

One day, Sophia. the best artist in her class, sat down and set up her easel （画架） next to Kelly. Kelly felt a sinking feeling in her stomach. She'd. actually found an art form that she enjoyed-and was good at--and now Sophia was going to outshine her again? Kelly fought back tears when Miss Grace entered the room. 

"Hello class, Miss Grace said. "We'll continue to work on the project today. What masterpiece would Sophia have come up with?

Kelly looked at Sophia's easel and she couldn't believe it--it was a mess! For a brief moment, Kelly couldn't actually believe her drawing was better than Sophia's. 

But then she looked at Sophia, who was watching Kelly with an anxious expression. "I…. I couldn't decide what to do, " Sophia said. "And you're so good. Sometimes I feel like my stuff is just so bad in comparison. 

Kelly looked to see if Sophia was joking, but she seemed completely serious. Now Kelly was shocked. "I'm not talented ... Miss Grace seldom praises me. You're the best one in our class!"

Sophia raised her eyebrows. "I might be a really good copier of the stuff, but I have no idea what to do when it comes to making up my own images. You are so great at making new things out of the old stuff. I've loved your works. "

"I've loved yours, too, Kelly said. 

"Well, definitely not this one, " Sophia said. 

Kelly smiled. "Maybe not right now. But if you move these lines up. . . "she said, pointing her finger on Sophia's paper. 

Sophia was quiet for a moment. "That's a great idea!" she said finally. 

Kelly smiled and turned back to her drawing, looking every so often at Sophia's work to see that she was taking her advice, down to the last line. 

The very unusual series of events finished as Sondrup was heading home from an extended work shift. She had just completed her fourth continuous night shift, and 1 was coming over her. Little did she know that July 26, 2023, would become a day unforgettable in her 2 .

While driving home, Sondrup 3 a truck had overturned on State Route 143 near Sky Harbour, with a man 4 inside. Despite her tiredness, she made an inspiration—of-the-moment decision to help.

"It's 5 , but there were so many reasons that led me to that fine moment," recalled Sondrup. "6 , I wouldn't have been there."

Under what she described as a turn of fate (命运), Sondrup 7 , joined by a couple of other individuals who happened to be passing by. With unquestionable timing, no other cars were on the road, allowing her to cross over safely and reach the 8 scene.

Sondrup courageously 9 under the truck to check the injured man. In an act of 10 , she used a bystander's belt as a makeshi ft tourniquet (止血带) to stop the bleeding. Months have passed since that fateful day, and on October 18, the Phoenix Fire Department 11 Sondrup for her life-saving actions.

"I really feel that my guiding 12 led me to that very moment," she told Fox 10Phoenix. "I'm not without imperfections, but I believe that at that 13 moment, I received a guiding premonition (预感)."

 The man Sondrup rescued recently reached out to express his 14 for the second chance at life. "I wish him nothing but the best," Sondrup said. "I hope he experiences a new 15 and a future filled with success."

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was born on February 27, 1807 in Portland, Maine. His father, Stephen, was a lawyer, so Henry was born into a rich family. Henry began 1 at age three. By the time he was six he was the smartest boy in the school. He was very good at spelling and arithmetic. But Henry loved to write and 2 became very skilled in it. Henry's father wanted him to become a lawyer, but after Henry 3 from Bowdoin College in Maine at the age of 19, he dreamed of becoming a(n) 4 . Henry wanted to travel to Europe to study. He followed that 5 , and later returned to Bowdoin to become a professor at age 22.  

In 1831, Henry 6 Mary Storer Potter, a former schoolmate. He 7 and started The New England. He and his wife travelled to Europe, where he studied Swedish, Danish, Finnish and the Dutch language and literature.  

In 1836, Henry began 8 in Harvard. He moved into a room of the famous Craigie House in Cambridge. In the Craigie House, Henry 9 to write poems and books.  

In 1847, Longfellow's poem Evangeline was 10 . Many people said Evangeline was his best poem. In 1854 he resigned from Harvard to 11 his time to his writing. The Song of Hiawatha, written in 1855, was also very popular, as it was one of the first poems to 12 the Native American Indian culture. When The Courtship of Miles Standish 13 in 1858, it sold 25,000 copies on the first day of publication.  

The next few years were 14 with honours and rewards. He was invited to the House of Windsor by Queen Victoria by 15 of the Prince of Wales. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow died on March 24, 1882.  

For the past 18 years, my daughter has been around me all the time. Now that she is in college, the 1 of our relationship has totally changed and our relationship is completely 2 . I'm not going to be there every morning to have breakfast with her. I won't know when she's mad or when she's happy. Here's a little story of our new 3 .

A week ago, my daughter wanted to 4 so she called me during the day as I was in meetings. I 5 her later on, but she was in class. At midnight, she reached out 6 to ask if we could talk. Well, guess what? I was 7 . I thought we would talk the next day, but she was not 8 ... 

Research shows that parents are 9 when their children are grown up, but for me that is when I start to get concerned. I am always left to 10 , how can I, as a parent, remain 11 to my daughter to guide, support and love through life's changes?

We may have to 12 the way we communicate. My daughter encouraged me to go digital. That's how I ventured into the world of social media, following her updates and occasionally sharing my own experiences. Through this 13 presence, the physical gap is 14 and I feel I still have an active role in her life.  This experience serves as a reminder that 15 , however scary, holds the promise of growth in our shared journey. 

Growing up in poverty in rural Kenya,Nelly Cheboi watched her single mother work tirelessly so she could attend school. 

From an early age,she realized that her family,along with others like hers in their village, was1 a cycle that left them little hope. Cheboi attended college.2 a scholarship in the United States,worked odd jobs to support her family,and discovered her3 for computer science. She4 the success in finding jobs to her computer literacy. She knew she wanted to share it with her5 back home. 

Today,she's giving 4,000 kids the chance for a6 future through her nonprofit, TechLit Africa. The organization uses recycled7 to create technology labs in schools in rural Kenya. 

In 2018,she began8 recycled computers. She started small,carrying the machines to Kenya and9 customs fees and taxes herself. TechLit Africa now works with shipping companies to10 the donated computers so it's more cost11 . The donated hardware is12 to partner schools in rural Kenya,where students aged 4 to 12 receive daily classes and13 opportunities from professionals and gain skills that will help improve their education and prepare them for future jobs. 

"My hope is that when the first TechLit kids graduate from high school,they're able to get a job online14 they will know how to code,"Cheboi said. "The world is your oyster when you are educated. By bringing the resources,by bringing these skills,we are15 the world to them. "

It was a rainy windy October afternoon. Garth stood outside his house with a wide smile. This was 1 weather for testing his new invention—Umbrella Hat. He could hardly wait to see whether it could keep the rain off. He carefully 2 the hat on his head and started walking 3 along the street. It worked!

Suddenly, three boys in his neighborhood appeared and 4 him. Todd, the biggest one, pulled his Umbrella Hat off his head.

"What's THIS?" he asked.

"It's an Umbrella Hat. You can wear it on rainy days and…" Garth said.

The boys 5 , "Will anyone wear that stupid thing?" Todd threw the hat onto the ground and they ran off.

Garth picked up his Umbrella Hat from the ground in tears. "Maybe Todd was 6 …in reality, who would ever need his invention?" He lowered his head and thought to himself.

Suddenly he 7 and saw a lady looking at him. "I was just leaving my house 8 I saw you and those boys. Are you okay?"

Then she saw the 9 Umbrella Hat and asked, "Er… what's that?"

"It's my Umbrella Hat. I thought of it and made it myself…" answered Garth.

"What a creative 10 you have! Don't ever let stupid boys put you down! Keep inventing and one day you will 11 something really great!" said the lady.

"And you have given me a wonderful 12 ," she continued, "I have a gadget (小器具) shop—Gadgets4U—and I'd like to hold a 13 to find the best young gadget inventor in our town. I will display (展示) three best inventions in my shop. I'm sure you will have a(n) 14 of winning a prize."

Garth was very 15 . Gadgets4U was one of his favorite places and the thought of having his invention displayed in that wonderful place was too exciting for words. He suddenly felt much better and could already feel lots of new ideas coming out, waiting to spring into life!
