任务型阅读

The search for one of life's greatest goals, happiness, is what brings almost 1,200 students to one of Yale University's most popular classes ever. Psychology professor Laurie Santos teaches the class.

One in four Yale undergraduate students has registered to take it. It has the largest class registration size in Yale's 317-year history. Santos says it is the hope that science can help students find peace among all the stresses and difficulties they face at college. "Students report being more depressed than they have ever been in history at college," she said.

Social science research has led to many new understandings of how people find happiness, Santos says.  she said of the students taking her happiness class.

Santos said feelings of happiness are created through several things.  She added that while many people may see money and possessions as goals in life, those things are not usually what make people most happy. School work for the happiness class, also known as Psyc157, includes showing more gratitude, performing acts of kindness and increasing social connections. Because of the popularity of the class, it has been made publicly available -- for free – on the website Coursera.

The class is already helping Yale students like senior Rebekah Siliezar. "What's most pressing on our minds is grades, it's the next job, it's a potential salary after graduation," said Siliezar. Now, she said tries more to "focus on the present moment and the people around me."

Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.

Recite and repeat in conversation. When you hear a person's name, repeat it. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.

Ask the other person to recite and repeat. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. After you've been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you're making to learn their names.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Admitting that you can't remember someone's name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say, "I'm working to remember names better. Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?"

Use associations (联想). {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. For example, you could make a mental note: "Vicki Cheng—tall, black hair." To reinforce (强迫) your associations , ,write them on a small card as soon as possible.

Limit the number of new names you learn at one time. When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. How to Become a Top Student

Successful students use different techniques(技巧)to study, which brings them more success. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Here are the four techniques almost all topper forming students use.

They are regular. Almost all successful students study regularly, because they know "what you give is what you get". If you put in regular hours of studying, then you will learn more and get better grades. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}This will help you to study regularly.

They have clear goals. All topper forming students have definite, specific goals. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}They motivate(激发)you and drive you to study more. But make sure that you do not get carried away. Set realistic goals which can challenge(挑战)you, but do not seem impossible or too difficult to achieve.

They study without pressure(压力). Successful students study a lot. But they study without putting strain on themselves. Most students make the mistake of studying too hard or studying continuously for a long time. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Studying should be done in a balanced manner. Take a break for a few minutes, after studying for 30 or 45 minutes. Relax, walk around your room or house, or drink some water and return to studying. Such short breaks will refresh your brain and you will learn more.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Studying is not something you do just because your parents ask you to do it. It's actually very important for you. You have an important test tomorrow. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}But you're still worried. You need to relax. What can help? Maybe a quiet walk? A cup of tea? A little yoga? Psychologists have another idea: Sit down and write! Write about your stress.

Why does writing help? There are two reasons. First, your memory works like the memory in a computer. You need to delete (删除) some documents to make room for other documents.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} So they need a lot of room in their brains for memory. They need to delete their "documents" of stress. Writing helps them by moving the stress out of the brain and putting it on paper. The second reason is writing helps you to focus. People write about their stress. As a result, they feel less worried. Then they can focus better on other things.

Psychologists are studying the connection between stress and writing. They do experiments with students. They put students into two groups.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}The other group sits quietly. Then all the students take a test. What are the results? The students in the writing group do better than the other group of students.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}Some people don't sleep well. Writing at night will help them sleep better. Some athletes get stressed about winning or losing. They can't focus on playing well. Writing before a game can help them play better. People in job interviews get stressed, too. Writing before an interview can help them relax.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Try this experiment: Go to class ten minutes early, and write about your stress. You can write in English or your own language. Then take the test. Maybe the psychologists are right. Maybe writing will help you, too.

A. Do you get stressed about tests?

B. Writing can help other people, too.

C. Writing can help you perform well in an exam.

D. Students need to remember a lot of information.

E. One group writes about their stress for ten minutes.

F. Do you feel relaxed after writing about your stress?

G. You study very hard and you're doing well in the class.
