    The kindly “Chinese Fortune Grandpa” wearing Han Chinese clothing and holding a fortune bag debuted(亮相) at the Imperial Ancestral Shrine in Beijing on the day after Christmas. The final image of the Chinese gift-giver was selected through a global design competition that cost millions of yuan. Its debut seems to be a sign of competition against “Santa Claus”, according to a report by Guangming Daily.

    Many Chinese cities have been filled with Christmas neon lights, Christmas songs, Christmas trees, and the images of “Santa Claus” in recent days. As a matter of fact, foreign festivals are becoming more popular than certain traditional Chinese festivals among the Chinese people, particularly the youth. “Certain traditional festivals have died out because people have forgotten their spiritual meanings,” said noted writer Feng Jicai. More and more Chinese people are beginning to exchange gifts on Valentine's Day and Christmas. However, many of them know nothing about Chinese New Year pictures or sugarcoated figurines(小糖人), and have never heard suona music. Certain folk customs on the Dragon Boat Festival, Tomb Sweeping Day, and other traditional festivals have gradually disappeared. Under such circumstances, even the “Chinese Fortune Grandpa” is unlikely to defeat “Santa Claus”.

    However, it is not a bad thing to some extent. It constantly reminds people to restore the “true face” of traditional festivals. China has listed traditional Tomb Sweeping Day, Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival as legal holidays, which brings more paid leaves to the public, and helps to awaken the public awareness of traditional festivals.

    In modern society, festival is a carrier of culture and its meaning largely depends on their understandings and usages by people. Compared with foreign festivals, traditional Chinese festivals are not inferior(次于) in cultural meanings, but lack of fashion sought by modern people. If people do not appreciate the historical culture contained by traditional festivals, and only take pleasure-seeking as the most important, the significance of traditional festivals will fade away and the inheritance(继承) of fine traditional culture will be cut off.

    The bristlecone pine (狐尾松) is one of the longest-living things on Earth. These trees, with their strangely shaped branches, can live up to 5,000 years, but experts worry that a warming climate in some areas may threaten its future.

    Researchers say warmer weather is permitting a similar kind of tree, the limber pine (柔枝松), to take over good growing places from the ancient bristlecone. They say the tree is being forced out of mountainous areas where it grows.

    Scientists at the University of California, Davis, say climate change is causing the trees to compete with each other.

    Brian Smithers led the research project. “The limber pine is taking all the good spots,” he said.

    Bristlecone pines grow in high mountain forests in eastern California, Nevada and Utah. In the mountains, they face high winds and extreme temperatures.

    The difficult conditions leave the trees with twisted(变形的) branches and shapes. To survive long periods without water, parts of the trees die, including much of their outer bark (外皮). This makes the trees appear dead, except for small green pine needles. They show that the tree is indeed alive.

    The oldest living bristlecone pine is somewhere in California. It is not marked in any special way, so that people do not try to damage it.

    The limber pine is the bristlecone's distant relative and competitor, which can also live a long time — up to 2,000 years. Researchers say it is found at lower elevations (纬度), where temperatures are warmer.

    The scientists at the University of California, Davis, recently released the results of a three-year study. Their research centered on trees that have started growing in the last 50 years in the Great Basin area of California's White Mountains. The researchers found that most of the trees growing at higher elevations were limber pines.

    Smithers said, “It's very strange to see it charging higher up and not see the bristlecone charging up the mountain slopes ahead of the limber pine.”

    Smithers said the bristlecones are not in danger of disappearing, but he thinks they could be forced out of some places where they have grown for thousands of years.

    Peter Skyllberg, a Swedish man, was trapped in his car for two months, with temperatures reaching -30^oC, with no food or water, and yet he survived. The best explanation was that his vehicle created an “igloo (snow house) effect” and protected him from the extremely low temperatures and that his body would hibernate(冬眠) during this time.

    Can humans get into a low-energy consumption state like a bear by reserving energy, and reducing body temperature? Chinese scientists are looking for the key to regulating body temperature.

    Scientists have found the hypothalamus (下丘脑), an area in the central lower part of the brain, is responsible for regulating body temperature. Wang Hong, a brain scientist at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, led her team to mark the neurons (神经元) responsible for regulating body temperature in mice by means of a cutting-edge genetic biology technique. In the experiments, they injected (注射) drug into mice to make the body temperatures of the mice drop rom 37℃ to 27 in two hours. The team found the change in body temperature caused no harm to the health of the mice. “We don't know if we can develop a drug that can control human body temperature. We still need a lot of study.” Wang said.

    Chinese scientists are not alone in such research. Body-cooling techniques are being used in pioneering hospitals around the world. Dutch doctors are now using low temperatures for patients who have suffered brain injuries in accidents, According to doctors working in Florence, it may even help to save the brains of babies who are born suffering from severe epileptic fits (癫痫病发作).
