Communicating with elderly parents is an important part of making sure they're doing okay.
It's important to set aside time every week to call up or drop by and see how your parents are doing.Also listen for the things they're not telling you, such as health problems or money worries.
Your parents might be slower and less active than before.It's important to respect this. Don't think that your elderly parents can't take care of their needs unless there are clear signs that this is the case. Remember, your elderly parents always care about being treated as someone who matters.
Also you must keep your words simple and often ask your elderly parents whether they've really understood. If you realize your parents need to make a major change, like moving to a nursing home, talk about such future issues early in small steps. Ask them about their plans for the future and what they hope. When you get a feel for what they prefer, you can slowly mention the topic of starting to make such changes.
Accepting the generation gap (代沟) is also important.For most people, making changes to their lifestyles, their opinions and their beliefs gets much harder as they age. Your views might differ a lot, but it's best to agree to disagree.
A. Bring happiness into your parents' life.
B. Be clear when you explain anything to your parents.
C. However, they're still able to make their own decisions.
D. Know their daily happenings and ask them what they're doing.
E. Though life is busy, remember to stay in touch with your parents.
F. Your parents have been doing things a certain way for a long time.
G. Be prepared to find suitable advisers that your parents might need.
We've all experienced peer pressure (同伴压力). It happens to everybody. However, people have different reactions. Confident people refuse to do things they don't want to do, but shy and anxious people often give in. It may be because they want to be liked. It may be because they worry that their friends will make fun of them, or perhaps they're just curious about trying something new. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}
It's hard being the only one who says no and the question is: how do you do it? {#blank#}2{#/blank#} If you think that missing maths, or smoking, or going somewhere you know your parents wouldn't like is a bad idea then the answer is simple: don't do it. It's your decision, nobody else's. You don't need to be aggressive. You don't need to shout and scream, but you must be confident and you must be firm. You need to say, “No thanks. I don't want to do that.”
Being on your own against everybody else is very hard, so it can really help to have at least one other peer, or friend, who will say no too. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} You want friends who will support you when you're in trouble. You don't want people who will always agree with the majority. Remember, the most popular people aren't always the most trustworthy.
{#blank#}4{#/blank#} — You can learn a lot from people your own age. They can teach you great football skills or the best way to do your maths homework. They can recommend music and advise you on fashion. And don't forget you can tell them things too, and that always feels great. So, find friends who have similar interests. And remember, friendship isn't about feeling depressed and guilty. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}
A. Choose your friends carefully. B. Firstly, you must decide what you believe in. C. It's about sharing experiences and having fun. D. Of course, peer pressure isn't completely bad. E. It may be because they were all born to be stubborn. F. Depression and guilt will surely give you peer pressure. G. Whatever the reason, some people end up doing things they really don't want to. |
Being organized is an important skill for school and life.When you're well organized, you can stay focused,instead of spending time hunting things down.
{#blank#}1{#/blank#} For schoolwork, it means having one notebook or place where you store all your assignment,so you know what you have to do and when. Keeping all your school work neat and in a specific place—these are the main parts of organization.
For home stuff, being organized means having a place to put your things and putting them back as you go. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} It means keeping your schoolbag,your shoes, and your clean underwear in the same places so you always know where to find them.
Planning is part of being organized, too. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Calendars,lists,and schedules can help you plan. You can buy or draw a calendar and keep it near your workplace. Making a schedule or “to-do” list for yourself is a good idea. Looking at your list helps you keep track of what you need to do. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Check off things when you've done them. Use your list to help you decide which thing is the most important to work on first.
{#blank#}5{#/blank#} But once you're organized,it feels great.The less time you spend hunting around for things or panicking about homework,the more time you have for better things,like reading a good book or playing.
A. Planning means deciding what you will do and when you will do it. B. First,you should get your schoolwork organized. C. Add new things as you get assignments. D. You will benefit a lot from a good habit. E. What does it mean to be organized? F. It takes some extra efforts to organize yourself and your stuff. G. It means hanging your coat up instead of dropping it on the floor or throwing it on a chair. |
The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we've never been before. But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line.
{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Imagine how you'd feel if you were in the other person's shoes. For anything you're about to send,ask yourself, "Would I say this to the person's face?" If the answer is no, rewrite and reread.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it's a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it's a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn't give you license to correct everyone else. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended. It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don't ask such questions.
A. It's natural that there're some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online. B. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you'd feel comfortable saying the words to the person's face. C. Everyone was new to the network once. D. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. E. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear. F. You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. G. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely. |
