People in the West didn't know coffee or tea two hundred years ago. They were 1 to drink them because they thought coffee or tea could kill a person. Once the king of England decided to find out 2 it was true.

    There were two brothers in prison(监狱) at that time.They would be killed 3 a few days because they did wrong. The king said, "I shall let them live but they must drink coffee or tea to the end of their lives. One brother must drink coffee and 4 must drink tea every day." And they followed the king's words.

    They both lived many years. At last, the elder brother died when he was eighty-three years old.The younger one died a few years later. After that, people 5 that coffee and tea were not bad to man.

    It was a lovely spring afternoon. My classmates and I were playing happily on the playground when I let out, “Ow! Ow! Something in my shoe is biting me.”

    Everyone was shocked by the cry. They took me into a classroom and were about to take off my 1. “Which foot is it?” one asked. “Let us have a look.”

    Suddenly, I remembered the holes in 2 socks. My family was very poor during those years. I wore welfare socks, which cost only a little, but those 3 welfare socks didn't last long. They soon had 4 at the bottom.

    I refused to take off my shoes. I 5 stand others seeing the holes in my sock. I tried to hold back my tears. Yet, each time the thing 6 my shoe bit me, tears raced down my face.

    My teacher, Miss Diane, hurried into the 7. “What's wrong?” she asked.

    “Something is biting her right foot, 8 she doesn't let us take off her shoe.” one of my classmates answered.

    Miss Diane lived next door to me. She 9 everything about my family. She put both hands on my shaking shoulders and 10 into my painful and hopeless eyes.

    “Oh, yes, it must be a sock-eating ant,” she said, as if she had 11 seen the thing inside the shoe. “I had a bite from one of those ants. By the time I got my shoe off, it had 12 almost the whole bottom off my sock.” My classmates nodded while they were listening to the teacher 13, although they all looked a little puzzled.

    Miss Diane took off my right shoe and sock and shook them over the dustbin. Two red ants14it.

    “Just what I thought. The ants have eaten part of her sock.” When she stroked an alcohol cotton ball on the bites, she added,” You are such a 15 girl to take so many bites.”

    The alcohol felt cool on the bites and a little girl's pride was saved by the “sock-eating ant” story.

    The Sun shone high in the sky．When a little boy was playing in the garden of a house，a deer suddenly rushed into．It took the boy away．This made the little boy afraid and shouted．His mother came out，seeing the deer running off towards the mountains with her little boy．

    The boy's mother was so worried. She ran after the deer，as fast as she could，but not too far away，she found her little boy sitting safely on the grass．His mother was so happy that she cried．

    When she went back home with her son，she was amazed at what she saw．The big tree in the back of their house fell down when she was out looking for her son．The whole house was broken．The chickens and dogs in the house were all dead．If she and her little boy were at home，．．．

    Then the little boy's mother remembered the deer．About a year ago，it ran into her house because a hunter(猎人)wanted to catch it．She felt sorry for the poor deer，so she covered it with some clothes．When the hunter rushed in，he couldn't find it．He thought it must go out of the back door, so he kept catching it，and when he was far，far away，she let it return to the forest．

    She never imagined that the deer could remember her kindness(友善)．

    Mr. White lived in a house less than two miles from his office, so he could1 home for lunch every day. Every time he drove back home, 2cars were parked outside his house and there was no room for his car. He had to park his car somewhere else, and then walked back home. This made him very 3.

    Then he wrote "NO PARKING"4 a small board, in the garden facing the road, but it didn't work. People seem to obey only a public notice.

    Mrs. White asked him to 5 a police notice. But he was afraid to do so. Then Mrs. White asked him to make6 just like a police notice. But he said he was not a 7and couldn't use the word "police". However, after a few days, Mr. White made a notice board.

    "Oh, dear!" Mrs. White looked at the board and said. "You told me you couldn't use the word 'police', 8why do you use it?"

    "9 at it again, please." Mr. White said. Mrs. White looked at it 10 this time and found it was a "polite" notice. She started to laugh, "You are really clever."

    For a period of month some time ago I became a vegetarian(素食者). Some people won't eat meat because they think it is 1to animals, or they care about their health. My reason is a little 2 : it is love.

    I simply wanted to remember my grandmother by not eating meat. My grandmother spent a large part of her life as a vegetarian, and some of my happiest childhood memories in Thailand were about sharing a 3 with her.

    In fact, as a child, I learned how to value food not from dishes my mother often cooked, 4from the simple dinner, my grandmother prepared. Often, dinner with Grandma would come with interesting stories she had known from her childhood.

    Grandma passed away more than ten years ago. Now I am an adult living in San Francisco, and Grandma's vegetarian suppers and 5 have become a past.

    But one morning, I suddenly thought that I could 6 hear the sound of my grandmother's voice because she had left me forever. So I decided to become a vegetarian for a month.

    In a city famous for its dining experience, this was 7. I 8 several dinner panics for fear of offending(冒犯) the hosts. I stopped walking by 9 where the smell of good cooking would be in the air. My best friend wondered if there was something wrong with me.
