初中英语冀教版七年级下册Unit 2 Lesson 8 Marco Polo and the Silk Road 同步练习B卷

阅读理解

The Silk Road is a historically important international trade (贸易) route between China and the Mediterranean (地中海). It began during the Western Han Dynasty and has been a bridge between East and West for over 2, 000 years

The ancient road started from Chang'an (now Xi'an) and ended in Eastern Europe, near today's Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea. It was about 6, 500 kilometers long and went across onefourth of the planet.

The Silk Road got its name in the 19th century because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. Silk, jade, ceramics and iron went west to Rome. And from the west came glass, gems and food like carrots.

The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. It was more than an ancient international trade route. Besides trade, knowledge about arts, science and literature, as well crafts and technologies was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced(影响)each other.

Today, China is trying to build the“21st Century Marine(海洋的)Silk Road”. With the help of APEC held in Beijing in November 2014, the dream of One Belt One Road(the “Silk Road Economic(经济的)Belt” and “21st Century Marine Silk Road”(“一带一路”)is coming true.

"May we all be blessed with longevity. Though miles apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together(但愿人长久,千里共婵娟)."wrote Su Shi, a poet during the Song Dynasty, in his well-known poem to his younger brother Su Zhe.

The moon is at its brightest on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. On this day, people celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been enjoying great popularity all over the country.

In ancient China, that day was a harvest(收获) festival because crops(庄稼) were harvested during that period. It was also a time for relaxation and celebration.

Just like Thanksgiving in Western countries, families also try to get together for the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy they are, people will try to return home for the celebration.

The Mid-Autumn has its own special food just as other traditional Chinese holidays. People eat mooncakes with fillings such as sugar and eggs. The round shape of the cake makes it look like the full moon. The full moon and mooncakes stand for family reunion(团聚).

With the beautiful moon up in the sky, people sit together, enjoy the full moon, eat mooncakes and fruit, share the stories, and express the best wishes for the family members and friends who live afar.

NASA has been trying hard to explore the space. The recent developments include, the launch* of the James Webb Space Telescope, the successful asteroid* hit by the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spaceship, and the launch of the most powerful rocket ever built for the Artemis mission. The James Webb Space Telesco pe is the biggest and most powerful telescope ever built. It can see through dust in the universe and find new stars hiding inside those clouds. Even more exciting, it will try to find signs of Life on planets far away!

The telescope has been working for more than a year and has caught some amazing images and data. One example is an image of a huge star called Wolf- Rayet 124, which weighs about 10 times heavier than our sun, reported the Space website.

DART spaceship is another breakthrough for NASA. It will be used to keep Earth safe from asteroids. In September 2022, NASA tested it by hitting an asteroid called Dimorphos. The goal was to change its orbit*

Finally, we have the Mega Moon Rocket! This rocket is the most powerful one ever made and it's being used to help us get closer to Mars. NASA successfully launched it on Nov 16, 2022, and it had a 26- day trip around the moon. This is the first step of NASA's Artemis mission, which plans to set up a base on the moon for people to use in the future.

Despite the program's high cost, NASA believes that the Artemis project is worth it as it will be a key next step in the story of human exploration. As NASA administrator Bill Nelson told the BBC," This time we' re going to learn how to live in that bad environment for long periods of time all with the purpose of one day going to Mars."

In recent years, more and more farmers in China have moved to cities to work. Many of them leave their children behind in villages. These children are called left- behind ones. In China, there are more than 60 million left-behind children. It is about a third of the children in the countryside and almost a quarter of the country's children. 40% of them are under age 5.

Left- behind children often face more problems than others. Safety is a big problem. Many children are too young to look after themselves. It is even sadder that some left- behind children die from drowning(溺水) or traffic accidents.

Another problem is about psychological(心理的) health. Left-behind children are hungry for love. A report says that more than 16% of them think parents don't love them and over 80% always feel not safe. They are usually oversensitive(过度敏感的), and don't get along with others.

Their education is also serious. According to a research, about 20% of left- behind children think they are not as good as others. Many are not interested in studying at school. They often don't do the homework and go to school late. Some children even take part in criminal(犯罪的) activities.

To make left- behind children live a happy and healthy life, our government as well as many people has done a lot. Every one of us should give a hand to them
