A young American woman worked in a school in Shanghai． {#blank#}1{#/blank#} she came to China，she knew little about the Chinese culture of language． One day on her way to school，she went to a bank {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(draw) some money．To {#blank#}3{#/blank#}surprise，the bank clerk(职员) asked her if she had had her lunch．She was surprised at such {#blank#}4{#/blank#}question because in the American culture it would mean that the bank clerk is inviting her to lunch．Between unmarried young people it can also mean the young man's interest in dating the girl．Since this bank clerk {#blank#}5{#/blank#}a stranger to the American woman，she was very puzzled(困惑的)，and quickly answered that she {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(eat) already．After this she went on to school and was even {#blank#}7{#/blank#}surprised when one of the teachers asked her the same question．

    By now she understood that it could not be an {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(invite) but was puzzled as to why they asked it．In the following days she was asked the same question again and again and she spent many hours {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(try) to work out why so many people kept asking her this．At last she thought that these people must be {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(concern) about her health．She was rather thin at the time，and she thought they must be worrying that she was not eating well!

    In fact the question like that has no real meaning at all — it is only a greeting．

    Last Saturday, my friend and I were walking back home after a nice evening. I {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(ask) my friend if we could walk through the town instead of taking our usual shortcut. So we did. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (sudden), a few {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(step) ahead, we saw a woman, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}was sitting on the edge of the sidewalk. She looked bad and when we asked her if she felt all right, we realized she was badly injured{#blank#}5{#/blank#} covered with blood. While my friend can back to our closest friend's place to get a thick cover, a young fellow joined {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (we) and called an ambulance. All along I sat next {#blank#}7{#/blank#} her, talking and {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (listen) to keep her awake until the ambulance arrived. She was badly {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(shock) and started to fall asleep. I knew that it was of great {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(dangerous) and she might have lost consciousness（意识）. We hope she is safe and sound now.

    Last year, my brother and I went to Miami for a vacation. Some of my friends who had been there before said {#blank#}1{#/blank#}was a wonderful holiday destination. Before we went, we had planned for months. When the day came, we were ready.

    After our plane landed, we went to the hotel. We had made our reservation six months{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(early),but the man at the front desk said there had been a mistake. We{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(tell)that our rooms hadn't been reserved for that week, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}for the week after. I didn't understand {#blank#}5{#/blank#}this would happen and my credit card had already been charged {#blank#}6{#/blank#}the reservation. What's worse, the hotel had been fully booked. When we were wondering what to do, the manager came out. She was{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(surprise)helpful. She apologized for the mistake and gave us a spare VIP room on {#blank#}8{#/blank#}top floor. We had never stayed in such an amazing room, and we weren't charged extra.

    The next day, my brother and I went to the beach {#blank#}9{#/blank#}we watched some people play volleyball. We got a little{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(sunburn),but the day had been so relaxing that we didn't mind.

    When an important holiday comes, I usually think of what gifts to buy or prepare for my family members. It is the act itself rather than the thing you buy that {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(matter). Either a small present, a text message or a phone call can mean a lot to the receivers. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, I had never got anything from my son, who is a university student. Parents never forget to celebrate their children's birthday, but their children seem to be very {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (forget). They seldom do something in return.

    Life is unpredictable, and you never know what will happen tomorrow. When my son came back during the summer vacation, my wife and I, as usual, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (meet) him at the station. On arriving home, much {#blank#}5{#/blank#} my surprise, my son took out a wrist watch and gave it to me, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (say) it was a birthday gift for me.     Some people say children get too much care and love from their parents and just take them for granted. It is natural for people to have such concerns and {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(worry), but things may not turn out as badly as{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (expect). We need to look more at the positive side of life, as a famous writer once said, "Life is {#blank#}10{#/blank#}best classroom one can never get."
