A young American woman worked in a school in Shanghai.  she came to China, she knew little about the Chinese culture of language. One day on her way to school, she went to a bank (draw) some money. To surprise, the bank clerk(职员) asked her if she had had her lunch. She was surprised at such question because in the American culture it would mean that the bank clerk is inviting her to lunch.Between unmarried young people it can also mean the young man's interest in dating the girl.Since this bank clerk a stranger to the American woman, she was very puzzled(困惑的),and quickly answered that she (eat) already. After this she went on to school and was even surprised when one of the teachers asked her the same question.

By now she understood that it could not be an (invite) but was puzzled as to why they asked it.In the following days she was asked the same question again and again and she spent many hours (try) to work out why so many people kept asking her this.At last she thought that these people must be (concern) about her health. She was rather thin at the time, and she thought they must be worrying that she was not eating well!

In fact the question like that has no real meaning at all — it is only a greeting.

举一反三
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。

Recently, an Internet slang word Foxi- or "Buddhist"- is becoming increasingly popular as it encourages people, especially {#blank#}1{#/blank#} young to remain calm and peaceful and avoid conflicts as much as possible- in other words, to live like a Buddha.

The phrase {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (create) for the first time in 2014 in Japan to describe young men who no longer bother to start relationships with women or follow someone else's life path. They prefer to stay in their own peaceful world without {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (disturb) and care little about passion and success.

In this fast-changing and {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (compete) world, many people are {#blank#}5{#/blank#} heavy pressure. It's only natural that people are seeking for a spiritual bay. However, some would compare "foxi" with "demotivational(无动力的) culture"- a phrase {#blank#}6{#/blank#} describes young people who feel aimless and powerless. They say that foxi actually reflects the reality that young people are losing their will to fight. They are pretending {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (keep) a healthy and wise attitude towards failure simply {#blank#}8{#/blank#} they are incapable(无能力的) of succeeding.

All in all, there is one thing that "Buddhist Youngsters" should {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (basic) keep in mind: You may want to keep a calm mindset, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} you should never stop fighting for yourselves!

After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.

UK Schools Ban Students From Using Slang (俚语)

Officials at Sheffield's Springs Academy has introduced a new policy to prevent students aged 11 to 18 {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (use) slangs and colloquial abbreviations (口语化的缩写) inside the school. Harris Academy Upper Norwood said it carried out the program to allow its students {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (express) themselves confidently and appropriately. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} we want to make sure of is that they are confident in using standard English. Slang doesn't really give the right impression of the person. Young people going to interviews for their first job need to make a good impression {#blank#}4{#/blank#}employers will have confidence in them.

Donna Bowater at the Telegraph writes that short forms of words {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (become) popular with the rise of text messages and the social networking website Twitter in the past few years.

"In addition to {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (give) students the teaching they need to succeed academically, we want them to develop the soft skills {#blank#}7{#/blank#} they will need to compete for jobs and university places," the school was quoted as saying in a statement by the BBC.

{#blank#}8{#/blank#} the above-mentioned support, South Yorkshire MP Angela Smith said that the policy might cause a risk to dialects (方言) and accents. Some critics argued that slangs provided students with an environment {#blank#}9{#/blank#} they could feel both the history and development of languages.

The widespread argument is making people wonder {#blank#}10{#/blank#} it is necessary to cut the use of slangs entirely or not. All in all, different opinions of the policy help us have a deeper understanding of the truth that language is always changing with the times.
