There are various festivals throughout the world, festivals to satisfy and please the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(ancestor), to honor some famous people or important events, and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (express) people's thanks to the God {#blank#}3{#/blank#} bringing them harvest. For example, in Mexico people observe the Day of the Dead in early November, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} people eat food in the shape of skulls and cakes with “bones” on them. In India, October 2 is {#blank#}5{#/blank#} national festival to honour Mohandas Gandhi who helped India become a(n) {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (depend) country. And in China, the Spring Festival, which {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (celebrate) in January or February, is the most {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (energy) and important because it is a festival that looks forward to the coming of spring. {#blank#}9{#/blank#} are there all these festivals? Because during the festivals, people can get together to eat, drink and have fun with each other, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (forget) all the daily struggle and demands for a while.

    Back in 1995, Jack Ma made his first trip to the US and used the Internet for the first time. After searching for “beer”, he saw that no results came up related {#blank#}1{#/blank#}China. When he then searched for “China” and still saw no results, he decided {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (set) up a Chinese website—the seed for Alibaba was sown.

    Ma hopes to keep expanding Alibaba outside of China and is aiming for 2 billion {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(consume) and 10 million small businesses to use {#blank#}9{#/blank#}company outside of China.

    Ma became the richest man in China, when  the company he founded floated on the stock market last year with a value of around ＄140 billion—the {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (large) public offering in history.

    A few months ago I left my hometown for Canada to study. I felt nervous because I was going to {#blank#}1{#/blank#}new place with new people. What worried my at first was that I couldn't speak English {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(fluent), and I also couldn't understand{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(they) customs. Everything was different {#blank#}4{#/blank#}my own country. I had to deal with everything alone.

    On Aug 13，four Chinese irrigation sites won global {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (recognize)and were added to the 2018 list of Heritage Irrigation Structures， among {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Dujiangyan is the oldest and only surviving damless irrigation system in the world.

    Built over 2，000 years ago in {#blank#}3{#/blank#} is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China， this amazing engineering achievement is still playing a crucial role in irrigating farms and providing water resources for more than 50 cities in the province.

    In ancient times，the region in which Dujiangyan now stands {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (threaten)by frequent flooding from the Minjiang River. Li Bing，a local official of Sichuan Province at that time，together with his son，decided to construct an irrigation system on the Minjiang River {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (prevent)flooding. After many studies，they found the {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (simple)solution was to build a dam，but this would have ruined the Minjiang River. So instead Li designed a series of {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (channel)built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (natural).Better still， the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain，{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (make)it suitable for farming.

    Ever since the great Dujiangyan Irrigation System was completed， the Chengdu Plain has been free {#blank#}10{#/blank#} flooding and the people there have been living peacefully.

This is where my kids grew up

    For years now, I've been wanting to sell our home, the place where my husband and I raised our kids. But to me, this house is more than just a building. In the front room, there's a wall that has hundreds of pencil lines. Every growth stage {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(mark) in pencils, with each child's name and the date.

    Of all the objects and all the memories, it's this one thing in a home that's {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(hard) to leave behind. Our kids grow in so many ways, but the wall is physical evidence of their progress. Friends I know have visited their previous home only {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(discover) their wall of heights has been freshly painted over. Over the years, I've talked about how much I would hate leaving that wall behind when I moved, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} the last marks were made 10 years ago when my kids stopped growing. She came to our house while I was at work, and over several hours, {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(take) photos of the hundreds of drawings and lines, little grey fingerprints, and old marks. Somehow, she managed to photograph {#blank#}8{#/blank#} we had experienced in all those years. Afterwards, she put all the photos together into one image, {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(transform) them into a beautiful history of my family.

    Three weeks later, my children's wonderful gift made its way to me —{#blank#}10{#/blank#} life-size photo of the pencil lines and fingerprints that represents entire lifetimes of love and growth.
