I live with my grandmother in a Beijing yard house. One day last year, (1)我惊讶的看到一个外国人从我家隔壁的房子里出来. He was very tall with short brown hair and a pair of glasses. The first time I saw him, (2)I was too shy to speak to him. "My English is too bad!"I thought. My grandmother told me that he had just moved into our yard. "I don't like it!" she said, "Foreigners aren't like us. Maybe he'll play loud music and have parties every night! I'm sure he's going to cause trouble."
Several days later, I met the foreigner as I was walking home after work. "Hello!" he said in Chinese! "My name's Tony. I've just moved into the house next door to yours. "While I was wondering what to say, he continued, "There's a nice bar down the road. Why don't you and your family come to the bar and have dinner with me? "Bars are bad places," said my grandmother when I told her, but we decided to go. (3)The bar was not at all what I had expected. It was in a beautiful little yard house, with several large bookshelves and pictures of Tibet on the walls. Several Chinese people and foreigners were sitting drinking or reading books. I noticed that some of the foreigners were speaking reading books. I noticed that some of the foreigners were speaking place.
The bar served special "hutong pizzas". As we ate, Tony told us about himself—he is an English expert (专家) in environment. He always likes to be quiet. My grandmother said to me, "He really seems like a very nice young man." Yes, Tony is my new neighbor, a nice foreigner.

When my brother and I were children, we spent a few weeks each summer in the countryside with our uncle. He was a geologist and loved to go on long walks to find stones to add to his collection at the university. More often than not, we followed him.

One day, we left early, and this time, our uncle gave us two backpacks. “ You can help me carry the samples(样本),” he explained.

Surely, why not? The whole day, we walked around the countryside, and every now and then, our uncle put stones in our bags. We were a bit surprised that sometimes he also took some stones out from our bags, but thought he had just found better samples.

We reached the house in the late afternoon. The backpacks were so heavy that we were really tired out when we put them on the ground. Yet our uncle's backpack was half-empty.

“Why did you give us so many stones?” we asked.

“I didn't. You did,” he said, waiting for a while before continuing. “ You did not know it, but I made you go through a little attitude(态度) test today.”

What do you mean an‘attitude test'?” we wanted to know.

“It is something someone once did to me. You see, I listened to every word you said. And whenever you complained(抱怨) about anyone or anything, I added a stone to your bags. And whenever you talked about something in an attitude of positive thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks.”

      We did. They were full.

“I hope you remember this little attitude test. You see, your negative thoughts are like stones. You carry them in your mind just like those stones and start paying attention to what you say and how you say things.”

This little lesson was one of the most important lessons I ever had. And I remember my uncle with great love for teaching us one of the most important lessons in life – the power of attitude.

Sydney Fredette has a lot of things to deal with. Not only is she a high school student, but she has also set up her own organization, Beary Merry Christmas. She volunteers(自愿)to serve poor kids and families in Orange Country in California, US.

To remember her best friend who died of cancer nearly 10 years ago, Fredette decided toy animal that is made by children themselves in the stores' workshops. Fredette then gave them as gifts to the homeless children in California during the holiday season.

With donations at more than 100 bears a year, Fredette and volunteers host activities every year, where volunteers not only give out the bears, but also clothing, meals, and other things.

Not wanting to limit(限制)the giving to just the holiday months, Fredette now hosts other activities for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day and Halloween, providing the chance for her volunteer team to make a difference through the year.

"I love making relationships with the people I serve," Fredette said. "The thanks they have, hearing their stories and seeing how happy they are, it's so cool."

Future plans for Fredette include building a public food bank and providing a self-development class for students in her school who will soon attend college.

Heading to college herself in the fall, Fredette is looking to stay local and continue to help out in her hometown. In fact, she was regarded as a "Dreamer & Doer" not long ago for her work in improving her community, along with 32 other high school students.
