Maybe you know floods, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But did you hear of typhoons(台风)?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean(太平洋) and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发)into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles(圆圈)and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 meters a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts, one is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. Here are the strongest winds and hardest rains.

Typhoons are very dangerous. In November this year, Typhoon Haiyan killed 5500 people in Philippines. More people are missing(消失).

What to do when a typhoon hits(袭击)?

⒈Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.

⒉Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!

⒊Listen to the radio or TV for important information.

⒋If you're told to go to a safer place, do it right now.

The ocean can be a great place to swim and play, it may also be useful in another way. Some scientists think that waves could help make electricity.
“Have you ever been on a surfboard or boat and felt yourself being lifted up by a wave?” asked Jamie Taylor of the Wave Energy Group in Scotland. “There is certainly a lot of energy in waves.”
Scientists are working on using that energy to make electricity. The United States and a few other countries have started doing research on wave energy, and it is already being used in Scotland.
Most waves are created when winds blow across the ocean. “The winds start out by making little ripples (波纹) in the water, but if they keep on blowing, those ripples get bigger and bigger and turn into waves,” Taylor said. “Waves are one of nature's ways of picking up energy and then sending it off on a journey.”
When waves come towards the coast, people can set up dams(大坝) to block the water and send it through a large wheel called a turbine(涡轮). The turbine can then power an electrical generator(发电机).
We will never run out of wave power. Besides, wave energy does not create the same pollution as oil and coal do.
Oceans cover three quarters of the earth's surface. That would make wave power seem perfect for creating energy around the world. But there are some disadvantages that need us to pay more attention to.
Jamie Taylor said that wave power still cost too much money. He said that its influence on animals in the sea is still unknown. Besides, wave power would get in the way of fishing and boat traffic.
With more research, “Many of these problems might be solved,” Taylor said. “Finding more energy sources(资源) is very important, for traditional sources of energy like oil and gas may run out some day.”
In the future, when you turn on a light button, an ocean wave could be providing the electricity!

Sometimes it seems that time is flying. Perhaps it doesn't need to feel this way. Our experience of time can be possibly changed. By understanding the psychological (心理学的) processes behind our different experiences of time, we might be able to slow down time a little.

One basic law of psychological time is that time seems to slow down when we're exposed (接触) to new environments and experiences. The law is caused by the relationship between our experience of time and the amount of information our minds process. The more information our minds take in, the slower time seems to pass.

It follows, then, that we have different experiences of time in different situations. In some situations, our life is full of new experiences. Our minds process a lot of information and time seems to slow down. In other situations, we have fewer new experiences and the world around us becomes more and more familiar (熟悉的). We become insensitive to our experience, which means we process less information, and time seems to speed up.

How can we slow down time? Here are two suggestions.

Firstly, since we know that familiarity makes time pass faster, we can expose ourselves to as many new experiences as possible. We can give ourselves new challenges, meet new people, and expose our minds to new information, hobbies and skills. This will increase the amount of information our minds process and expand (增加) our experience of time.

Secondly, and perhaps most effectively, we can give our whole attention to an experience-to what we are seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling or hearing. This means living through our senses rather than through our thoughts. For example, on the way home, focus your attention outside of yourself, instead of thinking about the problems you have to deal with. Look at the sky, or at the buildings you pass, traveling among them. This open attitude to your experiences helps take in more information and also has a time-expanding effect.

To a certain degree, we can understand and control our experience of time passing. It's possible for us to slow down time by expanding our experience of time.

My good friend Carlos invited me to his birthday party. He moved to Canada from Mexico when he was a baby, but his parents tried to follow some of the Mexican traditions. At his party, I saw my first pinata (彩盒). It looked like an animal and was full of candies. People put it on the ceiling (天花板). Carlos hit (打) the pinata until it broke. All the candies fell on the floor, and we had a great time eating candies. Everyone shared. It was fun!

Carlos's birthday party got me thinking about how kids in other places celebrate birthdays.

Do you know that in Vietnam, everyone's birthday is on the same day? Kids do not celebrate on birthdays. Instead, on New Year's Day, all the kids celebrate their birthdays. Parents give kids red envelopes (信封) with lucky money in them. What a great way to celebrate birthdays!

In South Africa, kids do not celebrate every birthday. However, on their 21st birthday, their parents make a key. It can be made of paper or wood. Parents give their child this key. It is a sign from the parents that the child can now "unlock the door to their future life".

In Japan, children get a new set of clothes on their birthdays. While in Italy, adults (成年人) pull children's ears—one pull for each year. In Denmark, a flag flies outside the window of a house where a child is having a birthday. When the child is asleep, adults put presents all around the child's bed.

The first record of a kite was more than 2,000 years ago in China. It's said that Han Xin, the leader of an army wanted to dig a tunnel (隧道) into a king's palace. He flew a kite over the wall of the palace to make sure the length (长度) of its string. In this way, he could decide how long the tunnel should be.

Kites have been flown in Japan for hundreds of years. In the 1700s, kites were flown in autumn to give thanks for a good harvest. They were also flown to send good wishes to couples who had their first son. Today in Japan, flying kites is seen as part of a celebration at the beginning of a new year. And kite festivals are held each year in many parts of the country.

Kites have been used for science purposes in the western world. The United States Weather Bureau has used box kites to collect weather data for 35 years. How amazing the kites are!

Weifang in Shangdong Province is famous for its kites. Weifang International Kite Festival, one of the most famous kite festivals, is held here in April every year. During the festival, people from all over the world come here to compete for the best kites and enjoy themselves.
