A rainforest is an area{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(cover) by tall trees with the total high rainfall spreading quite equally through the year. Rainforests have a great effect{#blank#}2{#/blank#}the world environment because they can take in heat from the sun and adjust the climate. Without the forest cover, these areas would reflect {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(much) heat into the atmosphere, warming the rest of the world. Losing the rainforests may also influence wind and rainfall patterns, potentially{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(cause) certain natural disasters all over the world.

    In the past hundred years,{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (human) have begun destroying rainforests in search of the three major resources: land for crops, wood for paper and other products, land for raising farm animals,{#blank#}6{#/blank#}affects the environment as a whole. For example, a lot of carbon dioxide in the air comes from burning the rainforests. People   {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(obvious) have a need for the resources from cutting trees {#blank#}8{#/blank#}we will suffer much more than we will benefit.

    Rainforests are often called the world's drug store. More than 25% of the medicines we use today come from plants in rainforests. However, fewer than 1% of rainforest plants have been examined for their{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (medicine) value. It is extremely likely that our best chance to cure diseases {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(lie)somewhere in the world's shrinking rainforests.

Why Does Rain Smell So Good?

    Do you love the smell of rain? If so, you're not alone.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(actual), some scientists believe that people got their love for the smell of rain from {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(ancestor), who relied on wet weather for their survival.

    But what makes rain smell so nice? There are several smells associated with rainfall that people find pleasing.

    One of these smells {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(call) “petrichor（尘土的味道）.” Petrichor, a term created in 1964 by two Australian scientists studying the smells of {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(rain) weather, comes from some chemical reactions.

    During dry periods some plants produce oils, and when it rains, these oils go into the air. Another reaction occurs when chemicals {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(produce) by some bacteria are sent out. All of these chemicals combine to create the pleasant particular smell when rain hits {#blank#}6{#/blank#} ground.

    Another smell associated with rain is ozone（臭氧）. During a thunderstorm, lightning can split oxygen and another gad and {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(it) in turn can combine into a new substance. This substance reacts with other chemicals to form ozone, {#blank#}8{#/blank#} has a sharp smell.

    When someone says he can smell rain coming, it may be that wind from an {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(approach) storm has carried ozone down from the clouds and {#blank#}10{#/blank#} the man's nose.

    The following is just a short story but it really brought home to me how very small acts of kindness and even polite behavior have {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (big) effects than we realize.

    I have a bad back {#blank#}2{#/blank#} flares up (发作) from time to time. Yesterday I was out walking in the street while {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (carry) shopping bags and my keys.     While it was {#blank#}9{#/blank#} small gesture and she couldn't have known that I was in too much pain to bend down, it {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (mean) a great deal to me at that moment
