Some people have a very good memory(记忆) and can easily learn quite long poems(诗) by heart. O{#blank#}1{#/blank#}have poor memory and can only remember things when they have said again and a{#blank#}2{#/blank#}.

    The famous English writer, Charles Dickens, said that he could walk down any long street in London and then tell you the n{#blank#}3{#/blank#} of every shop on both sides of the street. Many great men of the world have a w{#blank#}4{#/blank#} memory.

    A good memory is a great help in learning a language.  Everybody learns his own language by r{#blank#}5{#/blank#} what he hears when he is a small child. Some children live with their parents in foreign countries and they seem to l{#blank#}6{#/blank#} two languages as easily as one. In school it is not so e{#blank#}7{#/blank#} to learn a foreign language because students have little time for it, and they are busy with other subjects too. A man's mind is quite like a camera, but it takes photos not only of what we see but also of what we f{#blank#}8{#/blank#}, hear, smell and taste. When we take real photos with cameras, there is much to do before the photo is finished and ready to s{#blank#}9{#/blank#} to our friends. In the s{#blank#}10{#/blank#} way there is much work to be done before we can keep a picture forever in our mind.

    Memory is the diary that we all carry about with us.

    When the teacher asks a question in class, Wang Xiaobin never raises his hand, this situation is very common at middle schools. The 15-year-old boy always {#blank#}1{#/blank#} for other classmates or the teacher to give the answer. “What if my answer is {#blank#}2{#/blank#}?” Wang asks.

    Wang said only six or seven students in his class raise hands when a question is {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. “I think it's a problem that might affect(影响) our studies, but I am afraid to make {#blank#}4{#/blank#} in front of my classmates,” he said.

    Why didn't the students raise {#blank#}5{#/blank#} hands in class? Hu Wei, a teenager expert from Chinese Academy of Science gave his explanation to us. He said, “They lack confidence, or they are afraid of {#blank#}6{#/blank#} faces because of giving wrong answers.

    To encourage students to raise their hands in class, Hu suggests that teachers should try to guide and encourage students to offer their answers {#blank#}7{#/blank#} repeating the question. Hu also advised students not to be shy, but brave enough to try. No matter whether your answer is right or wrong, being active in class can help you understand the information better.

    Sun Pin, 16 of Fujian, always raises her hand as soon as she comes up with the answer, {#blank#}8{#/blank#}  if she isn't sure she has gotten it right. Sun can't understand why some of her classmates keep silent in class. She enjoys raising her hand a lot. “It keeps me enthusiastic (热情) and confident to express my idea,” Sun said. “Raising my hand has really made me outstanding.

    It was my first day at Grade 8. And the first lesson was {#blank#}1{#/blank#}English. When I was doing nothing, Mr. Li, our new English teacher, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} into the classroom. To my surprise, he held up a book, The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe, and asked “Who{#blank#}3{#/blank#}it yet? “. I put my hand up, because Poe was my favorite writer. Mr. Li asked if I really understood what the author tried to say in his book. My reply made him smile, and he asked me{#blank#}4{#/blank#}an essay on that subject. Mr. Li said “You have a gift for writing, Tony.” After that, English classes became a new interest for me. And now I realize how{#blank#}5{#/blank#} English is.
